An evaluation of statistical methods for the determination of age of death using dental root translucency and periodontosis.

Lamendin and colleagues (1992) proposed to assess age-at-death from root translucency and periodontosis. Several teeth from the same individual were included in their study. In our work, we evaluate the reliability of their formulas without introducing this bias. Our sample was constituted of 214 individuals (114 males and 100 women) selected from the Terry collection (U.S.A.). The R(2) between age and both indicators is equal to 0.33 and 0.08 (p < 0.001). Based on linear regression, the mean of standard error for individual age prediction was equal to 13.67 years, and the mean interval length

Radiographic survey of third molar development in relation to chronological age among Japanese juveniles.

The aim of the present study was to establish Japanese reference material on the third molar development of Japanese juveniles for forensic application. Observations were performed on the orthopantomograms of 1282 Japanese patients between the ages of 14.0 and 24.0 years. Demirjian formation stages of the maxillary and mandibular third molars were recorded for chronological evaluation of wisdom teeth and applied for further statistical analysis. Statistically significant differences were noted between the upper and lower jaws and genders. Accordingly, males achieved root developmental grades e

In the absence of dental records, do we need forensic odontologists at mass grave sites?

With the exception of exhumations of mass graves in Latin America, forensic dentists and odontologists are rarely involved in the examination of mortal remains recovered from mass graves. The cited reason is often that "there are no dental records-so what is the point"? In this presentation we review the published accounts of examination of remains arising from the conflict in the former Yugoslavia between 1991 and 1999 in which dental examinations are reported. There are roughly 30,000 missing persons of which more than 15,000 mortal remains have been identified, mostly based on DNA. There ar

[The role of the dentist in modern forensic age determination].

The increase of international movements has led to a greater demand for forensic age estimation of foreigners without valid identification documents. Age estimation on living individuals is part of asylum and criminal proceedings. Age estimation has become also important within identification of victims, because of the fact of increasing natural disasters and events of terrorism. Therefore dentists are more and more appointed to this job. There are varieties of methods in age estimation. Dental examination and analysis of panoramic x-ray are usually used for dental age estimation.

Age estimation by a dental method: a comparison of Lamendin's and Prince & Ubelaker's technique.

Lamendin et al. (J Forensic Sci 1992;37:1373) developed a general technique to estimate age of adults at death using two dental features: periodontosis and translucency of the tooth root. Prince and Ubelaker (J Forensic Sci 2002;47:107) modified this method, creating a formula for each sex and for different ancestries, and obtained more precise age estimations. In the present study, the validity of each method was tested in 45 males and 34 females of Spanish Caucasian origin, and a novel formula, based on Prince and Ubelaker method, was specifically developed for a population of mixed racial o

Accuracy of age estimation of radiographic methods using developing teeth.

Developing teeth are used to assess maturity and estimate age in a number of disciplines, however the accuracy of different methods has not been systematically investigated. The aim of this study was to determine the accuracy of several methods. Tooth formation was assessed from radiographs of healthy children attending a dental teaching hospital. The sample was 946 children (491 boys, 455 girls, aged 3-16.99 years) with similar number of children from Bangladeshi and British Caucasian ethnic origin. Panoramic radiographs were examined and seven mandibular teeth staged according to Demirjian's

From bite marks to vertical facial phenotype: Investigating the relationship between craniofacial and dental arch parameters using conventional wax and digital models.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate whether a relationship exists between craniofacial structures and bite marks, thereby enabling the prediction of facial type based on bite mark characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-eight volunteers (aged 19-25) without orthodontic treatment, craniofacial anomalies, or temporomandibular dysfunction participated. Bite marks were created on wax-covered sponge rollers. Intercanine distance, arch depth, and arch length were measured from wax models using a caliper and from intraoral scans using the iTero Scanner. Facial profile photographs were a

Legal age estimation using developing mandibular third molar roots of various developmental stages in Malaysian population: a CBCT study.

Impacted mandibular third molars (IMTM) are often excluded from dental age estimation due to limited accessibility and morphological variability. This study aimed to develop an age estimation model based on the apical surface area (ASA) of IMTM roots using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). A total of 446 CBCT images of Malaysians aged 15-25 years (243 females, 203 males) from Malay and Chinese ethnicities were retrospectively analyzed. ASA measurements were obtained using Mimics and 3-matic software (Materialise NV, Belgium). Impaction levels were classified via a modified Pell and Gregory

[Application of a modified stage classification in evaluating wisdom tooth eruption in a German population].

The evaluation of the eruption status of the wisdom teeth constitutes a significant component of the spectrum of dental methods available for purposes of forensic age diagnostics. In the present study, the status of wisdom tooth eruption was identified in 606 conventionally created orthopantomograms of 515 female and 91 male Germans, divided by sex and tooth, using a modified classification comprising four stages. Instead of the original stage C (gingival eruption) which cannot always be reliably identified on X-ray images of suboptimal quality, stage C of the modified classification was consi

Radiographic evaluation of Gustafson's criteria for the purpose of forensic age diagnostics.

The main criteria used in dental age estimation in living young individuals are mineralisation and eruption of the third molars. In order to further diversify the spectrum of characteristics after completion of third molar development, tests were undertaken to determine whether the characteristics studied by Gustafson can be ascertained with the required forensic certainty with the aid of the orthopantomogram and whether the evaluation of these could render forensic odontological age diagnoses possible beyond the 18th year of life. For this purpose, 1,299 conventionally produced orthopantomogr

An assessment of the versatility of Kvaal's method of adult dental age estimation in Indians.

OBJECTIVES: Radiographic dental age estimation methods are viable in the living and deceased. One such method [Kvaal et al. Forensic Sci Int 1995;74:175-85] quantified secondary dentinal deposition indirectly through measurements of tooth and pulp lengths and widths. The method is untested on non-European populations and our objective was to assess its accuracy in Indians and determine if population-specific formulae improved age estimation. METHODS: Digital radiographs of 100 Indians were made using the conventional paralleling technique (n=47) and bisecting angle technique (n=53), the latte

Estimating age of majority on third molars developmental stages in young adults from Thailand using a modified scoring technique.

The aim of this study was to achieve a referral database for dental age estimation of unaccompanied minors of Thai nationality. A total of 1199 orthopantomograms were collected from original Thai women and men equally divided in age categories between 15 and 24 years. On the radiographs, the developmental stage of the third molars was scored applying a modified scoring technique. Inter- and intra-observer reliabilities were tested using kappa statistics. Correlation between the scores of all four wisdom teeth and left-right symmetry were evaluated with Pearson's correlation coefficient. Studen

Craniofacial identification by computer-mediated superimposition.

Mass disasters are associated with a large number of fatalities, with victims being visually unidentifiable in most cases. Dental identification, although being an important and valuable identification method, is subject to the availability and quality of antemortem and postmortem dental records. This paper presents a simple-to-use method of human identification using an antemortem photograph showing anterior teeth with superimposition onto a postmortem image using specific features of Adobe Photoshop. We present cases and discuss the benefits and difficulties of this method.

Machine learning-based classification of population affinity in two North Indian populations using morphological dental traits-Forensic implications.

Forensic odontology is a sub-discipline of forensic science, that deals with examination, handling and demonstration of dental evidence for personal identification. Morphological dental traits (MDTs) can be used for the classification of population groups that may play a vital role in forensic identification. The objective of the present study was to classify the population affinity in two population groups on the basis of the MDTs using Machine Learning (ML) models and to comparatively analyze which ML model is the best for the classification. In the present study, 434 participants (207 Males

Age-at-death estimation in adults using three forensic methodologies: A Lamendin's technique approach for Latin American context and the extension of a forensic international dental database.

In forensic science, the information that teeth provide to the age estimation process is very important. In adults, one of the most widely used indicators of skeletal age is the Root Dentin Translucency (RDT), mainly through the Lamendin technique, which is used in various Latin American contexts. Recently, Parra et al. (2020) have developed a Bayesian regression model using the Lamendin technique to establish standardized criteria for estimating age-at-death in adults in various forensic contexts. In this study, we evaluate the applicability of this proposal together with the proposal by Lame
