Fecal parasite risk in the endangered proboscis monkey is higher in an anthropogenically managed forest environment compared to a riparian rain forest in Sabah, Borneo.

Understanding determinants shaping infection risk of endangered wildlife is a major topic in conservation medicine. The proboscis monkey, Nasalis larvatus, an endemic primate flagship species for conservation in Borneo, is endangered through habitat loss, but can still be found in riparian lowland and mangrove forests, and in some protected areas. To assess socioecological and anthropogenic influence on intestinal helminth infections in N. larvatus, 724 fecal samples of harem and bachelor groups, varying in size and the number of juveniles, were collected between June and October 2012 from two

Exposure to hepatitis E virus, hepatitis A virus and Borrelia spp. infections in forest rangers from a single forest district in western Poland.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is an emerging problem in developed countries. At least 2 zoonotic genotypes of the virus (HEV-3 and HEV-4) infect human beings. There are some data suggesting that forest rangers (FRs) can be at a higher risk of contact with HEV. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of HEV exposure markers in FRs from a single forest district in Greater Poland in relation to anti-HAV (hepatitis A virus) IgG, and anti-Borrelia spp. IgM and IgG antibodies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In total, 138 participants (48 FRs and 90 blood donors - BDs)

Characterising Ecosystem Composition, Structure and Function of Alternative Stable States in Temperate Forests of South-Eastern Australia.

Increasingly frequent and intense wildfires threaten to push ecosystems beyond their ecological thresholds. Fire-adapted forests can be vulnerable to ecosystem conversion under shortening fire-return intervals. To evaluate the impacts of fire regime change, we contrasted Eucalyptus forests that retained canopy cover under tolerable regimes (reference forests) with alternative states of markedly reduced canopy. These alternative states established following short-interval wildfires and have persisted through subsequent fires. Alternative states were dominated by more uniform distributions of sm

Exploring heterogeneity in survival benefit of neoadjuvant therapy for triple-negative breast cancer using causal survival forests.

INTRODUCTION: The individual survival benefit of neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) for patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) remains uncertain. This study aimed to evaluate the individualized treatment effect (ITE) of NAT on event-free survival (EFS) in patients with TNBC using causal survival forests. METHODS: This study included 803 patients with TNBC from a retrospective clinical cohort at a tertiary hospital in Henan Province, China. The outcome was 3-year EFS. ITEs were estimated on the restricted mean survival time (RMST) scale. A positive ITE indicated predicted benefit from NAT.

Leveraging Random Forests explainability for predictive modeling of children's conduct problems: insights from individual and family factors.

Conduct problems are among the most complex, impairing, and prevalent challenges affecting the mental health of children and adolescents. Due to their multifaceted nature, it is important to develop predictive models that capture the intricate interactions among contributing factors. This longitudinal study aims to: (1) evaluate the utility and effectiveness of Random Forest models for classifying children with varying levels of conduct problems, (2) analyze the interactions between individual and family variables in predicting high levels of conduct problems, and (3) determine the most releva

Application of causal forests to randomised controlled trial data to identify heterogeneous treatment effects: a case study.

BACKGROUND: Classical approaches to subgroup analysis in randomised controlled trials (RCTs) to identify heterogeneous treatment effects (HTEs) involve testing the interaction between each pre-specified possible treatment effect modifier and the treatment effect. However, individual significant interactions may not always yield clinically actionable subgroups, particularly for continuous covariates. Non-parametric causal machine learning approaches are flexible alternatives for estimating HTEs across many possible treatment effect modifiers in a single analysis. METHODS: We conducted a second

Mammal community composition and season determine the abundance of questing ticks in mountainous forests of central Japan.

Understanding the ecological drivers of tick abundance is crucial to mitigate the growing risk of tick-borne diseases such as severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) in Japan. This study investigates how mammal community composition and seasonality affect the abundance of questing ticks in mountainous forests of Gifu Prefecture, a border region of the SFTS endemic zone. Camera traps were used to monitor mammal species, and questing ticks were collected monthly via flagging along transects in 10 forest plots during 2021-2022. We recorded 14 mammal species including small-sized mammal

Roe deer exposure to trace metals and pesticides in forests and agricultural plains of North-eastern France.

Human activities related to agriculture and industrial development result in the emission of different types of pollutants in the environment. The phytosanitary pressure depends on the time of the year, the type of habitat, and the used treatments. Wildlife, particularly ungulates, can be exposed to pesticides and trace metals through their herbivorous diet directly impregnated by the environmental contamination. Wild game thus plays a sentinel role but can also represent a risk for human health by exposing venison consumers to these contaminants. The present study explored this dual problem i

Infections with Soil-Transmitted Helminths in BaAka Pygmies Inhabiting the Rain Forests in the Central African Republic.

Poor sanitation, improper food handling, limited access to safe drinking water sources, and limited access to healthcare services contribute to a high prevalence of infections caused by soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) among the BaAka Pygmies, an indigenous community living in Central Africa. The aim of this study was to determine the rates of STH infections in the BaAka people inhabiting the rain forests of the south-western parts of the Central African Republic (CAR) as well as to examine the validity of biannual deworming with a single dose of albendazole 400 mg in high-risk communities ex

Potential effects of brown howler monkey extinction on dispersal services in fragmented forests void of large dispersers.

The dispersal of large-seeded species strongly depends on medium-sized and large frugivores, such as primates, which are highly susceptible to population declines. In the Atlantic Forest, brown howler monkeys Alouatta guariba are medium-sized folivorous-frugivorous species that are likely to occur in small to large fragments where the largest frugivores are extinct. However, populations of this primate have been suffering from forest fragmentation, habitat loss, hunting, and the direct and indirect effects of yellow fever outbreaks, which increase the importance of understanding their role as

Mood Disorder Detection in Adolescents by Classification Trees, Random Forests and XGBoost in Presence of Missing Data.

We apply tree-based classification algorithms, namely the classification trees, with the use of the rpart algorithm, random forests and XGBoost methods to detect mood disorder in a group of 2508 lower secondary school students. The dataset presents many challenges, the most important of which is many missing data as well as the being heavily unbalanced (there are few severe mood disorder cases). We find that all algorithms are specific, but only the rpart algorithm is sensitive; i.e., it is able to detect cases of real cases mood disorder. The conclusion of this paper is that this is caused by

Nitrogen cycling microbiomes are structured by plant mycorrhizal associations with consequences for nitrogen oxide fluxes in forests.

Volatile nitrogen oxides (N2 O, NO, NO2 , HONO, …) can negatively impact climate, air quality, and human health. Using soils collected from temperate forests across the eastern United States, we show microbial communities involved in nitrogen (N) cycling are structured, in large part, by the composition of overstory trees, leading to predictable N-cycling syndromes, with consequences for emissions of volatile nitrogen oxides to air. Trees associating with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi promote soil microbial communities with higher N-cycle potential and activity, relative to microbial commu

Detection of Bartonella sp. in ticks and their small mammal hosts in mangrove forests of Peninsular Malaysia.

Bacteria of the genus Bartonella have been known as emerging zoonotic pathogens for several human diseases including cat scratch disease, Carrion's disease and trench fever. Numerous species of small mammals have been reported to play a role as a suitable reservoir to many pathogenic Bartonella. These infections are thought to be transmitted through blood-feeding arthropod vectors such as ticks, fleas and lice. The purpose of this study is to detect the presence of Bartonella species from tick samples collected from small mammals in mangrove forests of Peninsular Malaysia. Herein, 38 individua

Do the energy fluxes and surface conductance of boreal coniferous forests in Europe scale with leaf area?

Earth observing systems are now routinely used to infer leaf area index (LAI) given its significance in spatial aggregation of land surface fluxes. Whether LAI is an appropriate scaling parameter for daytime growing season energy budget, surface conductance (Gs ), water- and light-use efficiency and surface-atmosphere coupling of European boreal coniferous forests was explored using eddy-covariance (EC) energy and CO2 fluxes. The observed scaling relations were then explained using a biophysical multilayer soil-vegetation-atmosphere transfer model as well as by a bulk Gs representation. The LA

Pyrodiversity and Phylodiversity: Insights on Post-Fire Forest Communities.

Fire is a fundamental process that structures community assembly and biodiversity patterns; however, altered disturbance regimes associated with anthropogenic change present a major threat to fire-adapted systems. Reintroducing fire to increase pyrodiversity (spatiotemporal diversity in fire) has been identified as an important step in restoring fire-adapted western temperate forests. Here, we utilize phylogenetic and taxonomic metrics to assess how pyrodiversity influences plant community assembly dynamics and diversity patterns in the central Sierra Nevada, California, USA. Compared to fire
