Functional neuroimaging (PET and SPECT) in the selection and assessment of patients with Parkinson's disease undergoing deep brain stimulation.

Deep brain Stimulation (DBS) is an effective treatment for patients with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) and motor complications who can no longer be improved by adjustment of medical therapy. Selection of surgery candidates and follow-up after surgery are critical for good outcome. Functional neuroimaging can help in the clinical assessment of these patients. We have used single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and the tracer ECD to measure regional cerebral blood flow before and 6 months after DBS of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) in 20 patients with advanced PD. We found a signi

Identifying neuroimaging biomarkers for anxiety in emerging adults using machine learning and functional near-infrared spectroscopy during resting-state.

INTRODUCTION: The neuroimaging biomarkers for anxiety diagnosis remain poorly understood. This study aims to identify cortical regions whose hemodynamic patterns, derived from resting-state functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) combined with machine learning, may serve as potential biomarkers to assist in the assessment of anxiety cases. METHODS: The final sample comprised ninety participants in emerging adulthood: 50 anxiety patients and 40 healthy controls (HC). After demographic data collection and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) administration, all participants underwent a

Enriched Versus Standard NICU Environments and Preterm Brain Development: A Systematic Review of Structural, Diffusion, and Functional Neuroimaging Studies.

Preterm infants are at increased risk of developing abnormal brain structure. Research has also indicated that the environment of the NICU could affect the early development of the infant's nervous system. Methods used to evaluate brain development and white matter maturation include structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diffusion tensor imaging, and selected functional MRI techniques. This qualitative systematic review without meta-analysis synthesized evidence from neuroimaging studies evaluating enriched versus standard NICU environments in preterm infants. A systematic literature se

Gender effects on autism spectrum disorder: a multi-site resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging study of transcriptome-neuroimaging.

INTRODUCTION: The gender disparity in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been one of the salient features of condition. However, its relationship between the pathogenesis and genetic transcription in patients of different genders has yet to reach a reliable conclusion. METHODS: To address this gap, this study aimed to establish a reliable potential neuro-marker in gender-specific patients, by employing multi-site functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data, and to further investigate the role of genetic transcription molecules in neurogenetic abnormalities and gender differences in auti

Structural and functional brain recovery in individuals with substance use disorders during abstinence: A review of longitudinal neuroimaging studies.

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging studies reveal structural and functional including neurochemical brain abnormalities in individuals with substance use disorders compared to healthy controls. However, whether and to what extent such dysfunction is reversible with abstinence remains unclear, and a review of studies with longitudinal within-subject designs is lacking. We performed a systematic review of longitudinal neuroimaging studies to explore putative brain changes associated with abstinence in treatment-seeking individuals with substance use disorders. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we exa

Delineating visual, auditory and motor regions in the human brain with functional neuroimaging: a BrainMap-based meta-analytic synthesis.

Most everyday behaviors and laboratory tasks rely on visual, auditory and/or motor-related processes. Yet, to date, there has been no large-scale quantitative synthesis of functional neuroimaging studies mapping the brain regions consistently recruited during such perceptuo-motor processing. We therefore performed three coordinate-based meta-analyses, sampling the results of neuroimaging experiments on visual (n = 114), auditory (n = 122), or motor-related (n = 251) processing, respectively, from the BrainMap database. Our analyses yielded both regions known to be recruited for basic perceptua

Establishing a role of the semantic control network in social cognitive processing: A meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies.

The contribution and neural basis of cognitive control is under-specified in many prominent models of socio-cognitive processing. Important outstanding questions include whether there are multiple, distinguishable systems underpinning control and whether control is ubiquitously or selectively engaged across different social behaviours and task demands. Recently, it has been proposed that the regulation of social behaviours could rely on brain regions specialised in the controlled retrieval of semantic information, namely the anterior inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and posterior middle temporal g

Functional neuroimaging of high-risk 6-month-old infants predicts a diagnosis of autism at 24 months of age.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social deficits and repetitive behaviors that typically emerge by 24 months of age. To develop effective early interventions that can potentially ameliorate the defining deficits of ASD and improve long-term outcomes, early detection is essential. Using prospective neuroimaging of 59 6-month-old infants with a high familial risk for ASD, we show that functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging correctly identified which individual children would receive a research clinical best-estimate diagnosis of ASD at

Default Mode Network Functional Connectivity in Early and Late Mild Cognitive Impairment: Results From the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative.

BACKGROUND: Default mode network (DMN) functional connectivity is one of the neuroimaging candidate biomarkers of Alzheimer disease. However, no studies have investigated DMN connectivity at different stages of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The aim of this study was to investigate patterns of DMN connectivity and its breakdown among cognitively normal (CN), early MCI (EMCI), and late MCI (LMCI) subjects. METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging data and neuropsychological test scores from 130 subjects (CN=43, EMCI=47, LMCI=40) were obtained from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative.

Predicting Growth in Word Level Reading Skills in Children With Developmental Dyslexia Using an Object Rhyming Functional Neuroimaging Task.

An object rhyming task that does not require text reading and is suitable for younger children was used to predict gains in word level reading skills following an intensive 2-year reading intervention for children with developmental dyslexia. The task evoked activation in bilateral inferior frontal regions. Growth in untimed pseudoword reading was associated with increased pre-intervention activation of the left inferior frontal gyrus, and growth in timed word reading was associated with pre-intervention activation of the left and right inferior frontal gyri. These analyses help identify pre-i

Visual cortex activation to drug cues: a meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging papers in addiction and substance abuse literature.

BACKGROUND: Although the visual cortex does not typically receive much attention in addiction literature, neuroimaging studies often report significant activity in visual areas when drug users are exposed to drug cues. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to investigate the frequency with which occipital cortex activity is observed during drug cue exposure and to determine its spatial distribution. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed of human functional neuroimaging studies of drug cue-reactivity. Fifty-five studies were used to determine the frequency with which cluster

Pattern recognition and functional neuroimaging help to discriminate healthy adolescents at risk for mood disorders from low risk adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: There are no known biological measures that accurately predict future development of psychiatric disorders in individual at-risk adolescents. We investigated whether machine learning and fMRI could help to: 1. differentiate healthy adolescents genetically at-risk for bipolar disorder and other Axis I psychiatric disorders from healthy adolescents at low risk of developing these disorders; 2. identify those healthy genetically at-risk adolescents who were most likely to develop future Axis I disorders. METHODS: 16 healthy offspring genetically at risk for bipolar disorder and oth

COVID-19 is associated with changes in brain function and structure: A multimodal meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies.

The actual role of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in brain damage has been increasingly reported, necessitating a meta-analysis to collate and summarize the inconsistent findings from functional imaging and voxel-based morphometry (VBM) studies. A comprehensive voxel-wise meta-analysis of the whole brain was conducted to identify alterations in functional activity and gray matter volume (GMV) between COVID-19 patients and healthy controls (HCs) by using Seed-based d Mapping software. We included 15 functional imaging studies (484 patients with COVID-19, 534 HCs) and 9 VBM studies (449 pat

Effects of antidepressants on brain structure and function in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder: A review of neuroimaging studies.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) affects 2-3% of people worldwide. Although antidepressants are the standard pharmachological treatment of OCD, their effect on the brain of individuals with OCD has not yet been fully clarified. We conducted a systematic search on PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science to explore the effects of antidepressants on neuroimaging findings in OCD. Thirteen neuroimaging investigations were included. After antidepressant treatment, structural magnetic resonance imaging studies suggested thalamic, amygdala, and pituitary volume changes in patients. In addition,

Effect of parental depressive symptoms on offspring's brain structure and function: A systematic review of neuroimaging studies.

Perinatal Depression (PND) is a severe mental disorder that appears during pregnancy or in the post-partum. Although PND has been associated with behavioral problems in the offspring, its effects on brain development are unclear. With this review we aimed at summarizing the existing literature on the effects of perinatal depressive symptoms on children's brains. A search on PubMed and Embase of structural, functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) studies exploring the effect of PND on offspring's brain was conducted. We selected twenty-six studies, ten str

Multimodal Abnormalities of Brain Structure and Function in Major Depressive Disorder: A Meta-Analysis of Neuroimaging Studies.

OBJECTIVE: Imaging studies of major depressive disorder have reported structural and functional abnormalities in a variety of spatially diverse brain regions. Quantitative meta-analyses of this literature, however, have failed to find statistically significant between-study spatial convergence, other than transdiagnostic-only effects. In the present study, the authors applied a novel multimodal meta-analytic approach to test the hypothesis that major depression exhibits spatially convergent structural and functional brain abnormalities. METHODS: This coordinate-based meta-analysis included vo

Behavioral and neuroimaging evidence for impaired executive function in "cognitively normal" older HIV-infected adults.

The increased prevalence of HIV among adults >50 years underscores the importance of improving our understanding of mechanisms causing HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). Identifying novel and noninvasive diagnostic predictors of HAND prior to clinical manifestation is critical to ultimately identifying means of preventing progression to symptomatic HAND. Here, using a task-switching paradigm, in which subjects were cued (unpredictably) to perform a face-gender or a word-semantic task on superimposed face and word images, we examined the behavioral and neural profile of impaired co
