Assessment of malaria transmission intensity and insecticide resistance mechanisms in three rural areas of the Moyen Ogooué Province of Gabon.

BACKGROUND: Vector control is considered to be the most successful component of malaria prevention programs and a major contributor to the reduction of malaria incidence over the last two decades. However, the success of this strategy is threatened by the development of resistance to insecticides and behavioural adaptations of vectors. The aim of this study was to monitor malaria transmission and the distribution of insecticide resistance genes in Anopheles populations from three rural areas of the Moyen Ogooué Province of Gabon. METHODS: Anopheles spp. were collected using human landing catc

Epidemiology of dengue fever in Gabon: Results from a health facility-based fever surveillance in Lambaréné and its surroundings.

BACKGROUND: In Africa, information on dengue is limited to outbreak reports and focused on some countries with continuing transmission in West and East Africa. To estimate the proportion of dengue-positive cases among febrile patients and identify clinical indicators of dengue cases, we conducted passive facility-based fever surveillance in a catchment area population of 70,000 residents of Lambaréné and its surroundings in Gabon. METHODS: Non-malarial febrile patients with current fever or history of fever (≤7 days) between 1 and 55 years of age, were enrolled at Albert Schweitzer Hospital (

Spatio-temporal heterogeneity of urban malaria in Libreville, Gabon (2012-2023): neighborhood-level hotspot analysis for micro-stratified control.

BACKGROUND: In Libreville, Gabon, the Melen sentinel site has monitored malaria among febrile children for over a decade, offering a lens on intra-urban transmission. We aimed to characterize neighborhood-level spatial and temporal dynamics (2012-2023) and identify high-risk areas for micro-stratified control. METHODS: Geographic and parasitological data from 9,507 children (Jan 2012-Dec 2023) were analyzed. Diagnosis used standard microscopy (thick/thin smears). Plasmodium falciparum prevalence (PfPR) was calculated for 44 neighborhoods across four periods. Neighborhoods were classified by a

Reproductive functional anatomy and oestrous cycle pattern of the female brush-tailed porcupine (Atherurus africanus, Gray 1842) from Gabon.

In the present study, we examined certain features of the functional anatomy of the female genital tract of the wild brush-tailed porcupine (Atherurus africanus) to obtain data on the reproductive biology of this African forest rodent. Two consecutive experiments were performed. The aim of the first was to establish macroscopic and microscopic features of the genital organs, and to explore correlations between predominant ovarian structures and vaginal contents in 20 wild, mature females. In the second experiment, we inspected the external genitalia and vaginal smears of a further 10 females i

Malaria Transmission Intensity Likely Modifies RTS, S/AS01 Efficacy Due to a Rebound Effect in Ghana, Malawi, and Gabon.

BACKGROUND: RTS,S/AS01 is the first malaria vaccine to be approved and recommended for widespread implementation by the World Health Organization (WHO). Trials reported lower vaccine efficacies in higher-incidence sites, potentially due to a "rebound" in malaria cases in vaccinated children. When naturally acquired protection in the control group rises and vaccine protection in the vaccinated wanes concurrently, malaria incidence can become greater in the vaccinated than in the control group, resulting in negative vaccine efficacies. METHODS: Using data from the 2009-2014 phase III trial (NCT

Genetic Diversity of Hepatitis B and C Viruses Revealed by Continuous Surveillance from 2015 to 2021 in Gabon, Central Africa.

Viral hepatitis remains one of the largest public health concerns worldwide. Especially in Central Africa, information on hepatitis virus infections has been limited, although the prevalence in this region has been reported to be higher than the global average. To reveal the current status of hepatitis B and C virus (HBV and HCV) infections and the genetic diversity of the viruses, we conducted longitudinal surveillance in Gabon. We detected 22 HBV and 9 HCV infections in 2047 patients with febrile illness. Genetic analyses of HBV identified subgenotype A1 for the first time in Gabon and an in

Determination of the prevalence of Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma species in Bacterial vaginosis patients in association with antibiotic resistance profile in Franceville, Gabon.

BACKGROUND: Genital mycoplasma are only considered pathogenic at a certain level and are often associated with other pathological situations such as bacterial vaginosis (BV). They may lead to infertility as well as other gynaeco-obstetrical and neonatal problems. Despite numerous reported resistances, macrolides are required to treat pregnant women while non-pregnant women are managed with tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones. This study aimed to establish the prevalence and resistance rates of Mycoplasma hominis (Mh) and Ureaplasma spp. (Uu) in BV positive (BV+) women. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Va
