American journal of transplantation : official journal of the American Society of Transplantation and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons2025eng
Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) have implications for transplant access and outcomes. Inequities in transplantation have been identified over the years for minoritized groups based on race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability status, and other sociocultural identities. While DEIB initiatives have demonstrated success in improving transplant outcomes for some minoritized groups, many gaps still exist, and additional work is needed. Concerns about these practices have also been raised, and they may create barriers to achieving DEIB goals. This under

Fairness (also known as equity interchangeably) in machine learning is important for societal well-being, but limited public datasets hinder its progress. Currently, no dedicated public medical datasets with imaging data for fairness learning are available, though underrepresented groups suffer from more health issues. To address this gap, we introduce Harvard Glaucoma Fairness (Harvard-GF), a retinal nerve disease dataset including 3,300 subjects with both 2D and 3D imaging data and balanced racial groups for glaucoma detection. Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness globally

China is actively encouraging households to replace traditional solid fuels with clean energy. Based on the Chinese Families Panel Survey (CFPS) data, this paper uses propensity scores matching with the difference-in-differences model to examine the impact of clean energy in the household sector on residents' health status, and whether such an energy transition promotes health equity by favoring relatively disadvantaged social groups. The results show that: (1) The use of cleaner cooking fuels can significantly improve residents' health status; (2) The older adult and women have higher health

Cervical cancer is a preventable cancer through the use of screening and the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. Even with the availability of screening and the HPV vaccine, disparities exist by geographic area (rural versus urban) and sexual orientation and gender identity. Due to stigma the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minorities (LGBTQ+) encounter in healthcare, they are less likely to engage in routine healthcare. This is compounded in the rural LGBTQ+ population because of additional barriers such as lack of access to care, lack of competent prov

The COVID-19 pandemic is highlighting the harm perpetuated by gender-blind programs for marginalized citizens, including sexual and gender minorities (SGMs) and cisgender women. Gender-blind programs are known to augment harms associated with violence and structural stigmatization by reinforcing rather than challenging unequal systems of power. The intersecting marginalization of these populations with systems of class, race, and settler-colonialism is exacerbating the impact that policies such as physical distancing, school closures, and a realignment of healthcare priorities are having on th

BACKGROUND: This study investigated gender-based disparities in specialty preferences among dental students in Türkiye and evaluated the predictive performance of an artificial intelligence-based gender classification tool (NamSor). This study aimed to determine how these disparities shape specialty distribution and to assess whether AI-based gender identification aligns with verified data.
METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive design was employed using publicly available data from Turkish university websites and the Council of Higher Education. Gender was manually verified for all specialty

OBJECTIVES: Low relationship power and victimization by intimate partner violence (IPV) have been linked to HIV risks among adult and adolescent women. This article examines associations of IPV and relationship power with sexual-risk behaviors and whether the associations differ by gender among South African adolescents.
METHOD: Sexual-risk behaviors (multiple partners in past 3 months; condom use at last sex), IPV, and relationship power were collected from 786 sexually experienced adolescents (mean age = 16.9) in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, during the 54-month follow-up of a HIV/se

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) remains the primary vision complication of diabetes and the leading cause of blindness among adults, with up to 30% prevalence among low-income populations. Tele-retina is a cost-effective screening alternative to vision loss prevention, yet there is an adverse association between screening and income. Intersectionality theory notes that barriers to achieving health equity result from the intersection of personal and social characteristics. Experiences at this intersection are influenced by interpersonal and structural systems of oppression. Studies have f

Diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) interventions must be accessible to all people with diabetes. To address equity in the delivery of DSMES, interventions should consider the unique needs of various populations. This article outlines the needs of a wide range of populations, including people with diabetes who are racially or ethnically diverse; have limited English proficiency or literacy; are deaf or hard of hearing; are blind or have low vision; are neurodiverse; live with learning disabilities or intellectual or developmental disabilities; have dementia or cognitive impa

BACKGROUND: Women physicians face multiple systemic and social biases in the clinical setting that erode mental and physical well-being. Gender-based discrimination was reported by 76% of early-career women physicians, decreasing to 57% for mid-career, and 36% for late-career. While these trends suggest that these biases may diminish with career progression, they remain a persistent burden of women physician's careers. This article offers a unique contribution by centering early-career women family physicians, a group underrepresented in qualitative research on workplace bias. This article foc

INTRODUCTION: A Programme Science approach that prioritizes populations who will benefit most and ensuring resources are allocated to programmes that meet the needs of those populations will bring an equity focus to research. Gay men and other men who have sex with men, people who use drugs, sex workers of all genders, and trans and gender-diverse people, defined by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund) as key populations, have been disproportionately impacted since the start of the HIV pandemic. Anemia is a global health problem with diverse etiologies and significant impacts on morbidity and mortality. Despite the widespread use of antianemic drugs, therapeutic outcomes vary considerably between male and female. Biological sex and gender roles influence anemia risk, symptom presentation, drug metabolism, tolerability, and response, yet these dimensions are often underexplored in clinical practice and research. This review was undertaken to synthesize current knowledge on sex- and gender-specific differences in anemia and antianemic therapy. The rationale lies in the growing recogniti

BACKGROUND: In 2019, women accounted for 46% of surgical residents. Despite the international debate on gender disparities, no literature regarding the experience in Italy is available. The aim of this survey study was to assess satisfaction among female surgeons in Italy, and determine whether they encounter gender-based discrimination.
STUDY DESIGN: An anonymous, 83-item web-based survey was distributed among female surgeons working in Italy, from November 18 to December 31, 2020. Gender equity, satisfaction, and factors associated with higher satisfaction and work-life balance were explore

Despite major strides in global HIV prevention and treatment, development imbalances and gender disparities continue to shape the epidemic's burden worldwide. This study aimed to examine the associations between development indicators - including the Human Development Index (HDI), Gender Inequality Index (GII), Life Expectancy at Birth (LEaB), and Universal Health Coverage (UHC) - and HIV epidemiological measures (incidence, prevalence, mortality, and antiretroviral therapy [ART] coverage). HIV-related data for 2023 were obtained from the UNAIDS database. Countries with missing data were exclu

The unprecedented demands of the coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19) have imposed a significant degree of psychological distress on women health-care workers (WHCWs). Women comprise 76% of the health-care workforce in the United States and are subject to experience higher psychosocial ramifications in the pandemic era due to gender disparities. Accordingly, women who are dually mothers may be navigating complex interactions of role strain by managing abnormally high parental and occupational workloads. The psychological toll is exacerbated for women holding multiple oppressed identities across

Kidney disease has often been approached as affecting women and men similarly, yet important differences in sex-specific biology and gender-related social experiences shape risk, recognition, and treatment for women with CKD. Women more commonly have early-stage CKD but progress more slowly to kidney failure, a pattern influenced by hormonal factors and complicated by diagnostic practices that may delay detection. Evidence also suggests women receive lower-quality CKD care than men, including fewer nephrology referrals and lower use of guideline-recommended therapies. Pregnancy-related exposur

Despite proven HIV prevention efficacy, preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake among individuals assigned-male-at-birth remains suboptimal; understanding their preferences is crucial. We conducted PRISMA-guided systematic review of stated-preference methods (i.e., discrete choice experiments [DCEs]; best-worst-scale [BWS], adaptive choice-based conjoint analysis [ACBCA]) through November 21, 2024. Of 648 records, 10 met inclusion (eight DCEs and two ACBCAs); all enrolled men who have sex with men (MSM; no studies with transgender women participants). Attributes included out-of-pocket cost, side

The two-times higher prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in females versus males is well-known; however, there are also sex/gender differences in clinical presentation and diagnostic accuracy that are less examined but equally important to understand in terms of improving early detection, intervention and disease tracking in each sex/gender. This review explores how these disparities in clinical presentation manifest across the AD continuum, with a focus on the earlier stages of preclinical AD and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). We summarize evidence indicating that female's verbal memory
