Neurogenesis and generalization: a new approach to stratify and treat anxiety disorders.

Although an influence of adult neurogenesis in mediating some of the effects of antidepressants has received considerable attention in recent years, much less is known about how alterations in this form of plasticity may contribute to psychiatric disorders such as anxiety and depression. One way to begin to address this question is to link the functions of adult-born hippocampal neurons with specific endophenotypes of these disorders. Recent studies have implicated adult-born hippocampal neurons in pattern separation, a process by which similar experiences or events are transformed into discre

Malignant hyperthermia.

Malignant hyperthermia, also known as malignant hyperpyrexia, is a pharmacogenetic condition which can develop during general anaesthesia and can be fatal. The author suggests that more awareness of the condition is needed by ward-based nurses who are involved with patients undergoing surgery. The article describes the management of the condition, the nursing care and the screening available for susceptible patients.

Observational learning of comprehension monitoring skills in children who exhibit mental retardation.

An observational learning paradigm was used to instruct 5 children with mild or moderate mental retardation to monitor their comprehension of inadequate instructions. Instructions were inadequate because of an interfering signal, an unfamiliar word, excessive length, or an unfamiliar idiomatic phase. Subjects' peers served as models during the training. A multiple baseline design across subjects and across instruction types was employed. All subjects learned to request clarification of the first three inadequate instructions; however, none of the children learned to request clarification of id

Programming rapid generalization of correct articulation through self-monitoring procedures.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of a self-monitoring activity in the clinical and natural environment as a method of promoting rapid generalization of a target speech sound to beyond-treatment conditions. The subjects were 13 children who lateralized /s/ and /z/, substituted /theta/ for /s/ and /delta/ for /z/, and/or substituted /w/ for /r/. The children attended public school speech therapy, individually or in small groups, twice weekly for 15- to 20-min sessions throughout the entire study. The investigation was conducted in the context of a multiple baseline research d

Generalization of therapeutic changes in agoraphobia: the role of perceived self-efficacy.

Investigated the extent and mechanisms of therapeutic generalization across distinct areas of agoraphobic dysfunction. Twenty-seven severe agoraphobics were each given performance-based treatment for some phobic areas while leaving their other phobias untreated. Behavioral tests revealed that (a) the treated phobias improved significantly more than the untreated (transfer) phobias, (b) the transfer phobias improved significantly more than control phobias, and (c) the transfer benefits were highly variable within and between subjects. Analyses of possible cognitive mechanisms revealed that perc

A daytime nap with REM sleep is linked to enhanced generalization of emotional stimuli.

How memory representations are shaped during and after their encoding is a central question in the study of human memory. Recognition responses to stimuli that are similar to those observed previously can hint at the fidelity of the memories or point to processes of generalization at the expense of precise memory representations. Experimental studies utilizing this approach showed that emotions and sleep both influence these responses. Sleep, and more specifically rapid eye movement sleep, is assumed to facilitate the generalization of emotional memories. We studied mnemonic discrimination by

Suppression of self-stimulation: three alternative strategies.

Four boys with autistic-like behavior were treated for self-stimulatory behavior with three different treatment procedures--time out, differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO), and overcorrection. All four boys showed a rapid response to the overcorrection procedure. Three boys demonstrated some evidence of decrement in responding with time-out. During the DRO procedure, one showed a modest decrease, two showed no change, but one exhibited a consistent increase in responding under this condition. A multiple baseline applied to one of the subjects failed to reveal any generalization of

Mapping Review on Characteristics of Publications on Modifiable Psychosocial Factors in Headache Diseases.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Modifiable psychosocial risk factors are associated with and may contribute to the chronification of headache diseases. Assessing such factors is an integral part of multidimensional pain management. However, an overview of modifiable psychosocial risk factors and their role (e.g., chronification, prevalence, association, comorbidity) in migraine (MGR), tension-type headache (TTH), and cervicogenic headache (CeH) is missing. The present mapping review aimed to provide an overview of characteristics of modifiable psychosocial risk factors in MGR, TTH, and CeH. RECENT FINDING

Randomized comparison of W.A.R.A. (Wiring Affect with ReAttach) versus distraction: A pilot study assessing the efficacy of an ultrafast transdiagnostic intervention.

BACKGROUND: Generally, neuropsychiatric patients share different symptoms across nosological categories, such as, amongst other, psychological distress, mood alterations, anxiety, and self-regulation disturbances.ReAttach is a novel psychological intervention with its key elements being external affect and arousal regulation, stimulation of multiple sensory processing, conceptualization, affective mentalization, and associative memory processing. ReAttach has been hypothesized to be effective in reducing symptom severity in different psychiatric conditions. Given the limited information curren

From symmetry to asymmetry.

An introduction is given on Matte Blanco's theory about symmetrical and asymmetrical thought processes and their correspondence with primary and secondary thought processes. The system unconscious is seen in terms of Matte Blanco's principles of symmetry and generalization and their implication in the absence of time, space and the differentiation between the whole and its parts. Clinical material from two cases of agoraphobia are shown as examples of a disturbance or absence of the concept of space in the unconscious and its translation into a symptomatology. The result of psychoanalysis of b

Object Detection, Recognition, Deep Learning, and the Universal Law of Generalization.

Object detection and recognition are fundamental functions that play a significant role in the success of species. Because the appearance of an object exhibits large variability, the brain has to group these different stimuli under the same object identity, a process of generalization. Does the process of generalization follow some general principles, or is it an ad hoc bag of tricks? The universal law of generalization (ULoG) provides evidence that generalization follows similar properties across a variety of species and tasks. Here, we tested the hypothesis derived from ULoG that the interna

Generalization effects of coping-skills training: influence of self-defense training on women's efficacy beliefs, assertiveness, and aggression.

Concern for personal safety is a pervasive stressor for many women. Developing competencies in physical self-defense may empower women to engage more freely in daily activities with less fear. This study assessed the effects of physical self-defense training on multiple aspects of women's perceived self-efficacy and other self-reported personality characteristics. Training powerfully increased task-specific (self-defense) efficacy beliefs as well as physical and global efficacy beliefs. Training increased self-reported assertiveness, and posttraining decreases in hostility and aggression were

Increasing spontaneous verbal responding in autistic children using a time delay procedure.

One oft-cited problem with teaching speech skills to autistic children is the failure of the speech to be spontaneous. That is, the children's speech often remains under the control of the verbal behavior of others rather than under the control of other nonverbal referents in the environment. We investigated the effectiveness of a time delay procedure to increase the spontaneous speech of seven autistic children. Initially, the experiment presented a desired object (e.g., cookie) and immediately modeled the appropriate response "I want (cookie)." Gradually, as the child imitated the vocalizati

Bringing the feet in from the cold: thermal biofeedback training of foot-warming in Raynaud's syndrome.

The biofeedback-assisted treatment of a case of Raynaud's syndrome was examined in order to determine the relationship between learning of the hand-warming response and the subsequent ability to produce foot-warming responses. It was found that fluctuations in dermal hand and foot temperatures were not significantly related, either within or across treatment sessions. The obtained hand-warming response was of high magnitude and rapidly learned, while the foot-warming response was more modest and took substantially more trials to learn. These results indicate that an easy generalization of the

Differences in the stimulus properties of barbital and hallucinogens.

The present investigation sought to determine whether drugs which produce markedly different perceptual effects in man, barbital and mescaline or LSD produce different stimuli in rats. In a standard 2 lever operant test chamber, rats received sweetened milk for correct responses according to a variable interval schedule. All sessions were preceded by 1 of 2 treatments; following Treatment A, only responses on Lever A were reinforced and, in a similar fashion, Lever B was correct following Treatment B. No responses were reinforced during the first 5 min of a daily 30 min session. It was found t

NeuroNet-AD: A Multimodal Deep Learning Framework for Multiclass Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent form of dementia. This disease significantly impacts cognitive functions and daily activities. Early and accurate diagnosis of AD, including the preliminary stage of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), is critical for effective patient care and treatment development. Although advancements in deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) models improve diagnostic precision, the lack of large datasets limits further enhancements, necessitating the use of complementary data. Existing convolutional neural networks (CNNs) effectively process visual feature

Immobilization Discomfort During Prolonged Emergency Stretcher Use: An Exploratory Qualitative Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND: Accurate pain assessment in trauma care is challenged by the coexistence of multiple forms of discomfort. Recognizing and differentiating these experiences is essential to improve assessment accuracy and guide appropriate early interventions. However, immobilization discomfort remains poorly defined. PURPOSE: Explore the experiences of healthy volunteers subjected to immobilization on an ambulance stretcher, and develop a preliminary conceptual definition of immobilization discomfort. DESIGN: Exploratory qualitative descriptive study. METHOD: This exploratory qualitative descrip

[2 approaches to experimental psychology studies in psychopathies].

The paper deals with some results of experimental psychological studies of psychopathic personalities, which indicate the efficacy of using not only experimental data for verifying the existing clinical concepts. Such studies are important as well for formulating some psychological hypotheses, the solution of certain questions on the basis of the known personality theories in psychology. The possibility of using psychological examinations for the study of motivations in psychopathies are discussed. For the 4 forms of psychopathy (explosive, hysterical, inhibited, paranoidal) the prevalent moti

Remembering as an observer: how is autobiographical memory retrieval vantage perspective linked to depression?

It has long been noted that the emotional impact of an autobiographical memory is associated with the vantage perspective from which it is recalled (Freud, 1950). Memories recalled from a first-person "field" perspective are phenomenologically rich, while third-person "observer" perspective memories contain more descriptive but less affective detail (Nigro & Neisser, 1983). Although there is some evidence that depressed individuals retrieve more observer memories than non-depressed individuals (e.g., Kuyken & Howell, 2006), little is known of the cognitive mechanisms associated with observer m
