Avian leukosis virus (ALVs), an oncogenic retrovirus, induces immunosuppression and various tumors in chickens, posing a severe global threat to poultry health and causing substantial economic losses. Natural resistance alleles, notably tvar2 and tvbr3, confer genetic resistance to specific ALV subgroups (ALV-A, -K, and ALV-B, -D, -E, respectively). This study aimed to exploit this resistance by creating resistant chicken lines via primordial germ cells (PGCs)-mediated chimera. We first genotyped the tvar2 and tvbr3 loci in Qingyuan Partridge Chickens (QYPCs) and Zhanjiang Yellow Chickens (ZJY

Mosquito species in the Anopheles gambiae complex have been referred to as "the deadliest animals in the world" due to their role as vectors of malaria throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Consequently, An. gambiae was among the first species to have its whole genome sequenced in 2002 and it continues to be the subject of intense study. An. gambiae is one member of a nine member species complex and, along with its sister species, An. coluzzii, is among the most important vectors of human malaria. Laboratory research on malaria vectors across a broad range of disciplines utilizes a strain known as G3

The immune system of NOD mice exhibits several anomalies, one being the intrathymic formation of giant perivascular spaces (PVSs) filled with mature thymocytes and some B-cells, intermingled within a network of extracellular matrix. The abnormal retention of thymocytes on their way to the periphery could have a profound impact on the nature of the exported cells and the regulation of autoimmune events. In the present study, we evaluated the appearance of this defect into F1 hybrids, the association with some of the known diabetes susceptibility loci (Idd genes) in a panel of NOD and reciprocal

Along with manipulating habitat, the direct release of domesticated individuals into the wild is a practice used worldwide to augment wildlife populations. We test between possible outcomes of human-mediated secondary contact using genomic techniques at both historical and contemporary timescales for two iconic duck species. First, we sequence several thousand ddRAD-seq loci for contemporary mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) throughout North America and two domestic mallard types (i.e., known game-farm mallards and feral Khaki Campbell's). We show that North American mallards may well be becoming

Lint percentage (LP) is a core determinant of cotton yield. Here, we systematically characterized the evolutionary impacts and molecular mechanisms of GhFLA9_D12 on fiber development. Population genomics revealed a significant selective sweep at the locus, where the superior haplotype HapA (T/INS) correlates with higher LP and underwent continuous selection during modern breeding. This favorable variation was likely introgressed from G. barbadense into G. hirsutum. Mechanistically, GhFLA9_D12 regulates fiber development via divergent expression and protein functions. Transcriptionally, a 162-b

Cryptococcus neoformans is an unconventional dimorphic fungus that can grow either as a yeast or in a filamentous form. To facilitate investigation of genetic factors important for its morphogenesis and pathogenicity, congenic a and α strains for a filamentous form were constructed. XL280 (α) was selected as the background strain because of its robust ability to undergo the morphological transition from yeast to the filamentous form. The MATa allele from a sequenced strain JEC20 was introgressed into the XL280 background to generate the congenic a and α pair strains. The resulting congenic str

The zoonotic Plasmodium knowlesi parasite is a growing public health concern in Southeast Asia, especially in Malaysia, where elimination of P. falciparum and P. vivax malaria has been the focus of control efforts. Understanding of the genetic diversity of P. knowlesi parasites can provide insights into its evolution, population structure, diagnostics, transmission dynamics, and the emergence of drug resistance. Previous work has revealed that P. knowlesi fall into three main sub-populations distinguished by a combination of geographical location and macaque host (Macaca fascicularis and M. ne

BACKGROUND: Biomphalaria glabrata is a snail intermediate host for Schistosoma mansoni, a trematode responsible for human schistosomiasis. BS90 is one of the most well studied strains of B. glabrata owing to its high resistance to infection by most strains of S. mansoni. An F2 mapping study from 1999 identified two RAPD markers that associated with what appeared to be single-locus, dominant resistance by the BS90 population relative to the susceptible M-line population. One marker cannot be mapped, but the other, OPM-04, maps to within 5 Mb of PTC2, a region we recently showed has a very large

BACKGROUND: Polyploidy is widespread in animals and especially in plants. Different kinds of ploidies exist, for example, hexaploidy in wheat, octaploidy in strawberries, and diploidy, triploidy, tetraploidy, and pseudo-tetraploidy (partly tetraploid) in fish. Triploid offspring from diploid parents occur frequently in the wild in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and, as with triploidy in general, the triploid individuals are sterile. Induced triploidy in Atlantic salmon is common practice to produce sterile fish. In Norwegian aquaculture, production of sterile triploid fish is an attempt by gove

The biota of Sulawesi is noted for its high degree of endemism and for its substantial levels of in situ biological diversification. While the island's long period of isolation and dynamic tectonic history have been implicated as drivers of the regional diversification, this has rarely been tested in the context of an explicit geological framework. Here, we provide a tectonically informed biogeographical framework that we use to explore the diversification history of Sulawesi flying lizards (the Draco lineatus Group), a radiation that is endemic to Sulawesi and its surrounding islands. We empl

Cold stress (CS) is a major abiotic factor that significantly affects rice growth, development, and productivity. To withstand CS, rice plants have evolved intricate mechanisms that enable them to detect external signals and respond to changing environmental conditions. Understanding the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying cold tolerance (CT) is therefore crucial for developing rice cultivars that can thrive under cold conditions. To date, a limited number of genes/QTLs associated with CT, such as: Ctb1, COLD1, COLD6, qLTG3-1, SGD1, and CTB4a, have been cloned and well studied. T

Polymorphisms for melanic form of insects may provide various selective advantages. However, melanic alleles may have significant/subtle pleiotrophic "costs." Several potential pleiotrophic effects of the W (=Y)-linked melanism gene in Papilio glaucus L. (Lepidoptera) showed no costs for melanic versus yellow in adult size, oviposition preferences, fecundity, egg viability, larval survival/growth rates, cold stress tolerance, or postdiapause emergence times. Sexual selection (males choosing yellow rather than mimetic dark females) had been suggested to provide a balanced polymorphism in P. gla

Speciation typically involves a stage in which species can still exchange genetic material. Interspecific gene flow is facilitated by the hybrid zones that such species establish upon secondary contact. If one member of a hybridizing species pair displaces the other, their hybrid zone would move across the landscape. Although theory predicts that moving hybrid zones quickly stagnate, hybrid zones tracked over one or a few decades do not always follow such a limitation. This suggests that hybrid zones have the potential to traverse considerable distances over extended periods of time. When hybr

BACKGROUND: The Anopheles gambiae species complex comprises about nine sibling species, including An. gambiae, An. coluzzii, and An. arabiensis, three of the four major malaria vector species across Africa. Insecticide-based vector control remains the most critical tool in the fight against malaria, with a heavy reliance on pyrethroid insecticides. However, widespread pyrethroid resistance jeopardises the effectiveness of these methods. Currently, the number of diagnostic markers available to track pyrethroid resistance in endemic settings is limited, focusing mainly on changes at the insectic

Dictyocaulosis is a parasitic disease that affects ungulate species, including red deer (Cervus elaphus). The genus Dictyocaulus comprises eighteen species, but only four have been reported to infect red deer. The disease is characterized by respiratory tract infection, particularly in the lungs, bronchi, and bronchioles, leading to inflammatory and hemorrhagic microscopic lesions, as well as emphysema and edema. The biological cycle involves a female ovipositing larvated eggs in the bronchi and trachea, which are expelled to the exterior through coughing or feces, releasing L1 into the enviro

Chinese native thymes (CNTs) in the genus Thymus (family Lamiaceae) are rich in bioactive terpenes, which exert antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidation, immunological, and antimicrobial effects. Plants exhibit morphological variation, including erect-type and creeping-type growth forms; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying important horticultural traits have not been determined. Here, we collected 39 CNTs providing strategic plant resources for studies of lignin, terpenoids, and glandular trichomes of thymes. Using resequencing data as well as phenotypic, metabonomic, phylogenetic,

Central Africa, a forested region that supports an exceptionally high biodiversity, hosts the world's largest group of hunter-gatherers, who live in close proximity with groups that have adopted agriculture over the past 5000 years. Our understanding of the prehistory of these populations has been dramatically hampered by the almost total absence of fossil remains in this region, a limitation that has recently been circumvented by population genomics approaches. Different studies have estimated that ancestors of rainforest hunter-gatherers and Bantu-speaking farmers separated more than 60 000

The haematophagous insects of the subfamily Triatominae (Hemiptera-Reduviidae) have great epidemiological importance as vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. Mepraia was originally described as a monotypic genus comprised of Mepraia spinolai, distributed along coastal areas of northern Chile (from Region I to the Metropolitan Region). Recently, some M. spinolai populations have been ranked as a new species named Mepraia gajardoi. Several populations along the distribution range of the genus were sampled, and genetic differentiation was studied based upon the anal

Posterior microphthalmia and nanophthalmia are related genetic conditions that disrupt ocular growth. Here, we conducted a biometric analysis of mouse models to assess shared features of these diseases. Three known microphthalmia alleles (Mfrprd6, Prss56glcr4, and Adipor1tm1Dgen) and two prospective alleles (C1qtnf5tm1.1(KOMP)Vlcg and Prss56em2(IMPC)J) were introgressed onto the C57BL/6J (B6) genetic background and compared to B6 mice at 1 through 12 months of age. Biometric parameters obtained using optical coherence tomography were analyzed statistically to identify strain differences. Fundu

We showed previously that C57BL/6 congenic mice with an introgressed homozygous 70 cM (125.6 Mb) to 100 cM (179.8 Mb) interval on c1 from the lupus-prone New Zealand Black (NZB) mouse develop high titers of antinuclear Abs and severe glomerulonephritis. Using subcongenic mice, we found that a genetic locus in the 88-96 cM region was associated with altered dendritic cell (DC) function and synergized with T cell functional defects to promote expansion of pathogenic proinflammatory T cell subsets. In this article, we show that the promoter region of the NZB gene encoding the SLAM signaling pathw
