Modelling typhoid risk in Dhaka metropolitan area of Bangladesh: the role of socio-economic and environmental factors.

BACKGROUND: Developing countries in South Asia, such as Bangladesh, bear a disproportionate burden of diarrhoeal diseases such as cholera, typhoid and paratyphoid. These seem to be aggravated by a number of social and environmental factors such as lack of access to safe drinking water, overcrowdedness and poor hygiene brought about by poverty. Some socioeconomic data can be obtained from census data whilst others are more difficult to elucidate. This study considers a range of both census data and spatial data from other sources, including remote sensing, as potential predictors of typhoid ris

Coincidence between geographical distribution of Leptotrombidium scutellare and scrub typhus incidence in South Korea.

To clarify the geographical distribution of scrub typhus vectors in Korea, a survey of larval trombiculid mites was conducted from 2005 to 2007 by collecting wild small mammals twice a year (spring and autumn) at 24 sites nationwide. A total of 67,325 mites representing 4 genera and 14 species were collected from 783 trapped rodents, corresponding to a chigger index (number of chigger mites per rodent) of 86.0. The predominant mite species were Leptotrombidium pallidum (52.6%), Leptotrombiduim scutellare (27.1%), Leptotrombidium palpale (8.2%), Leptotrombidium orientale (5.6%), and Neotrombicu

Geographic tongue: What is this disease?

Geographic tongue or benign migratory glossitis, is a unique and peculiar tongue condition, producing a map-like appearance with filiform papillae atrophy, on different parts of the tongue. The lesions change in shape with time. The exact etiology remains unknown, although it has been suggested relating the lingual microbiota of a patient. The association between geographic tongue and psoriasis has long been pointed out, and histological similarities existed between both as well. Increasingly, recent findings suggest the involvement of certain oral bacteria. Here, we discuss these findings wit

COVID-19 Infection and Previous BCG Vaccination Coverage in the Ecuadorian Population.

The Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is a well-known vaccine with almost a century of use, with the apparent capability to improve cytokine production and epigenetics changes that could develop a better response to pathogens. It has been postulated that BCG protection against SARS-CoV-2 has a potential role in the pandemic, through the presence of homologous amino acid sequences. To identify a possible link between BCG vaccination coverage and COVID-19 cases, we used official epidemic data and Ecuadorian Ministry of Health and Pan American Health Organization vaccination information. BCG informa

Trends in the epidemiology of systemic endemic mycoses in Latin America.

The changing epidemiology and diagnostic challenges of coccidioidomycosis, histoplasmosis, and paracoccidioidomycosis in Latin America are reviewed. The agents responsible for these three systemic endemic mycoses are dimorphic fungi from the Onygenales order, all of which are classified as World Health Organization fungal priority pathogens. However, the mycoses they cause span a notable diversity of contrasting etiologies, target populations, geographic distributions, and factors (including climate changes) that determine their incidence. New, updated maps are presented that reflect the curre

Leishmania donovani complex (Kinetoplastida, Trypanosomatidae): comparison of deoxyribonucleic acid based techniques for typing of isolates from Ethiopia.

In Ethiopia, visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is an increasing public health concern. Recently, a new outbreak of VL claimed the lives of hundreds of Ethiopians. Mapping its distribution and the identification of the causative Leishmania species is important for proper use of resources and for control planning. The choice of appropriate typing technique is the key for determining the infecting species. Here we compared three deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) based markers. We used, for the first time, cpbE and cpbF (cpbE/F) PCR-RFLP and demonstrated that it clearly differentiates Leishmania donovani from

Global database of leishmaniasis occurrence locations, 1960-2012.

The leishmaniases are neglected tropical diseases of significant public health importance. However, information on their global occurrence is disparate and sparse. This database represents an attempt to collate reported leishmaniasis occurrences from 1960 to 2012. Methodology for the collection of data from the literature, abstraction of case locations and data processing procedures are described here. In addition, strain archives and online data resources were accessed. A total of 12,563 spatially and temporally unique occurrences of both cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis comprise the data

Subnational estimates of vitamin A supplementation coverage in children: a geospatial analysis of 45 low- and middle-income countries.

OBJECTIVES: Vitamin A supplementation (VAS) can protect children from the adverse health consequences of vitamin A deficiency. Granular data on VAS coverage can guide global and national efforts to achieve universal VAS coverage. To provide geographically precise targeting of VAS programs and to monitor progress in reducing geographic disparities, we aimed to create high-resolution (5 × 5 km2) maps of VAS coverage in children under 5 years across VAS priority countries. STUDY DESIGN: We used cross-sectional data from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) program. METHODS: We used data fro

Mapping Soil Transmitted Helminths and Schistosomiasis under Uncertainty: A Systematic Review and Critical Appraisal of Evidence.

BACKGROUND: Spatial modelling of STH and schistosomiasis epidemiology is now commonplace. Spatial epidemiological studies help inform decisions regarding the number of people at risk as well as the geographic areas that need to be targeted with mass drug administration; however, limited attention has been given to propagated uncertainties, their interpretation, and consequences for the mapped values. Using currently published literature on the spatial epidemiology of helminth infections we identified: (1) the main uncertainty sources, their definition and quantification and (2) how uncertainty

Lymphatic filariasis in Nigeria; micro-stratification overlap mapping (MOM) as a prerequisite for cost-effective resource utilization in control and surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Nigeria has a significant burden of lymphatic filariasis (LF) caused by the parasite Wuchereria bancrofti. A major concern to the expansion of the LF elimination programme is the risk of serious adverse events (SAEs) associated with the use of ivermectin in areas co-endemic with Loa filariasis. To better understand this, as well as other factors that may impact on LF elimination, we used Micro-stratification Overlap Mapping (MOM) to highlight the distribution and potential impact of multiple disease interventions that geographically coincide in LF endemic areas and which will impac

Mortality and physician supply: does region hold the key to the paradox?

OBJECTIVE: . To determine if the supply of physicians has a consistent relationship with mortality across regions. DATA SOURCES: County-level data describing the supply of physicians, mortality, and socioeconomic conditions of the population as provided in the Area Resource File (BHPr, HRSA) and the Compressed Mortality File (NCHS, CDC). STUDY DESIGN: Ordinary least squares and geographically weighted regression models with age-adjusted all-cause and disease-specific mortality as the dependent variables were specified using pooled data from 1996 to 2000 to test for the relationship with prim

GIS walking maps to promote physical activity in low-income public housing communities: a qualitative examination.

INTRODUCTION: Walking is the most commonly reported leisure-time activity. Members of racial/ethnic minority groups and people of low socioeconomic status disproportionately live in urban environments that are perceived to be unsafe, thereby reducing opportunities for engaging in walking. We examined the use of walking maps for increasing physical activity (PA) among low-income residents of public housing sites in Boston, Massachusetts. METHODS: PA facilities, local businesses, and destinations in a walkable half-mile radius of the housing community were identified and plotted on maps by usin

Three-dimensional visualization of cultural clusters in the 1878 yellow fever epidemic of New Orleans.

BACKGROUND: An epidemic may exhibit different spatial patterns with a change in geographic scale, with each scale having different conduits and impediments to disease spread. Mapping disease at each of these scales often reveals different cluster patterns. This paper will consider this change of geographic scale in an analysis of yellow fever deaths for New Orleans in 1878. Global clustering for the whole city, will be followed by a focus on the French Quarter, then clusters of that area, and finally street-level patterns of a single cluster. The three-dimensional visualization capabilities of

Spatial risk prediction and mapping of Schistosoma mansoni infections among schoolchildren living in western Côte d'Ivoire.

The objectives of this study were (1) to examine risk factors for Schistosoma mansoni infection among schoolchildren living in western Côte d'Ivoire, and (2) to carry forward spatial risk prediction and mapping at non-sampled locations. First, demographic and socio-economic data were obtained from 3818 children, aged 6-16 years, from 55 schools. Second, a single stool sample was examined from each child by the Kato-Katz technique to assess infection status of S. mansoni and its intensity. Third, remotely sensed environmental data were derived from satellite imagery and digitized ground maps. W

Genetic variation among dengue 2 viruses of different geographic origin.

Genetic variation in dengue 2 isolates from various geographic areas was examined by oligonucleotide fingerprinting of the 40 S genome RNA. Oligonucleotide maps of geographically isolated and epidemiologically unrelated viruses were very distinct. Direct comparison of the oligonucleotide map of the dengue 2 prototype New Guinea 2 virus, isolated in 1944, with the fingerprints of more recent isolates from the South Pacific indicated that the genome of dengue 2 virus had undergone extensive change although the viruses are serologically indistinguishable. The oligonucleotide map of an isolate fro

Remote memory for visuospatial information in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

Remote memory for visuospatial information was studied in patients with dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT) using a test of geographic knowledge previously employed in a study of patients with Huntington's disease. When asked to locate places on a map of the region of the United States in which they were born and raised or on a map of California where they currently resided, the DAT patients performed less accurately than controls. However, unlike controls, the performance of DAT patients in locating places was relatively more accurate using the map of the region in which they were born and r

Land use, land cover, and prevalence of canine visceral leishmaniasis in Teresina, Piauí State, Brazil: an approach using orbital remote sensing.

This study examines the association between land use and land cover and the occurrence of canine visceral leishmaniasis (VL). This is a case-control study in which cases were households with seropositive dogs for canine VL and controls were households with seronegative dogs. We used remote sensing images (CBERS: 2/CCD and 2B/HRC) to describe land use and cover in squares of 625m2 in the study area. Odds of canine VL were twice as high in households located in squares with an area ≤ 25m2 covered by residential structures with little vegetation in comparison to those where the cover reached ≥ 60
