Association between travel burden and surgical timeliness for women with breast cancer in Georgia.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluates associations between patient distance traveled to surgical care and receipt of timely breast cancer surgery in Georgia. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included electronic health record data from women diagnosed with stage I-III breast cancer from 2004 to 2020 who received upfront surgery. Race was self-reported. Distance from patient home address to surgical treatment facility was measured as crow-fly distance. Multivariable logistic regression models estimated associations between time to surgery, race, and distance. RESULTS: Of 18,240 patients (

Evaluating Georgia's Cystic Fibrosis Newborn Screening Algorithm to Inform Improvement Recommendations.

Early diagnosis by newborn screening (NBS) has contributed to improved outcomes in children with cystic fibrosis (CwCF). Georgia's two-tiered algorithm consists of a fixed immunoreactive trypsinogen (IRT) cut-off followed by a 39-variant CFTR genetic panel. We conducted a retrospective review of CwCF born in Georgia from 2007 to 2022 to evaluate false negative NBS frequency. We characterized CwCF whose diagnosis was delayed beyond 28 days of age despite positive NBS. Six cases were detailed demonstrating the impact of missed and delayed diagnoses. We examined IRT trends from 2018 to 2022 and c

Socioeconomic and geographic factors associated with the timing of surgical intervention for sagittal craniosynostosis in Georgia.

OBJECTIVE: Nonsyndromic sagittal craniosynostosis is the most common form of craniosynostosis, and its management includes open cranial vault reconstruction (CVR) or minimally invasive techniques such as endoscopic suturectomy with helmet orthosis (ESO) and spring-assisted suturectomy (SAS). Delayed surgical referral can limit eligibility for minimally invasive techniques, which are associated with lower morbidity. Disparities in socioeconomic factors may contribute to later presentation, particularly for minority populations. This study explores the impact of sociodemographic variables, Area

Clinical and bacterial determinants of unfavorable tuberculosis treatment outcomes: an observational study in Georgia.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health concern. Improving TB control programs and treatment success requires a deeper understanding of the factors that determine disease presentation and treatment outcomes. While the importance of patient factors is well established, our understanding of the bacterial determinants of disease presentation and treatment outcomes in TB remains limited. METHODS: In this study, we analyzed the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) genomes and the associated clinical data from 4529 TB patients in the country of Georgia covering a period of

The Association Between Ambient Temperature and Snakebite in Georgia, USA: A Case-Crossover Study.

The World Health Organization has identified snakebite envenoming as a highest priority neglected tropical disease, yet there is a dearth of epidemiologic research on environmental risk factors, including outdoor temperature. Temperature may affect snakebites through human behavior or snake behavior; snakes are ectotherms, meaning outdoor temperatures influence their internal body temperature and thus their behavior. Here we investigate the relationship between short-term temperature and snakebites in Georgia, one of the most biodiverse US states in terms of herpetofauna. We acquired emergency

The burden of non-communicable diseases and their related risk factors in the country of Georgia, 2015.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), mainly cardiovascular diseases, are a substantial cause of mortality in the country of Georgia, accounting for approximately 93% of all deaths (standardized mortality rate 630.7 deaths per 100,000 persons per year) and an important threat to health security. We conducted a nationally representative survey examining the prevalence of NCDs and their risk factors as part of a 2015 Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) and Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) serosurvey. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional serosurvey among adults aged ≥18 years using a stratified, multi-sta

The impact of the low-income housing tax credit on children's health and wellbeing in Georgia.

Housing instability is a risk factor for child abuse and neglect (CAN). Thus, policies that increase availability of affordable housing may reduce CAN rates. The Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program is the largest affordable housing policy initiative in the country. This study used fixed-effects models to estimate the relationship between LIHTC units and county-level CAN reports in Georgia from 2005 to 2015, controlling for county demographic characteristics. One-way fixed-effects models (including only county fixed-effects) demonstrated significant negative associations between numbe

Pyrazinamide resistance-conferring mutations in pncA and the transmission of multidrug resistant TB in Georgia.

BACKGROUND: The ongoing epidemic of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in Georgia highlights the need for more effective control strategies. A new regimen to treat MDR-TB that includes pyrazinamide (PZA) is currently being evaluated and PZA resistance status will largely influence the success of current and future treatment strategies. PZA susceptibility testing was not routinely performed at the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) in Tbilisi between 2010 and September 2015. We here provide a first insight into the prevalence of PZA resistant TB in this region. METHODS: Phenotypic susc

Risk factors associated with human brucellosis in the country of Georgia: a case-control study.

Human brucellosis occurs when humans ingest or contact Brucella spp. from shedding animals or contaminated environments and food. In Georgia animal and human brucellosis is endemic, but the epidemiology has not been fully characterized. A case-control study was conducted in 2010 to identify risk factors for human brucellosis. Using multivariable logistic regression, the following risk factors were identified: animal-related work [odds ratio (OR) 77·8, 90% confidence interval (CI) 4·7-1278], non-animal-related work (OR 12·7, 90% CI 1·1-149), being unemployed or a pensioner (OR 13·1, 90% CI 1·7,

Effects of flooding and drought on water quality in Gulf Coastal Plain streams in Georgia.

Since 1994, water-quality constituents have been measured monthly in three adjacent Coastal Plain watersheds in southwestern Georgia. During 1994, rainfall was 650 mm above annual average and the highest flows on record were observed. From November 1998 through November 2000, 19 months had below average rainfall. Lowest flows on record were observed during the summer of 2000. The watersheds are human-dominated with row-crop agriculture and managed forestlands being the major land uses. However, one watershed (Chickasawhatchee Creek) had 10 to 13% less agriculture and greater wetland area, espe

Tularemia: review of eight cases of tick-borne infection and the epidemiology of the disease in Georgia.

In the period 1960 to 1979, 177 cases of tularemia occurred in residents of Georgia. A tick bite was the implicated source of exposure in eight cases (4.5%), whereas 91 cases (51.4%) were associated with direct contact with infected rabbits. In Georgia and other southeastern states, the epidemiology of human tularemia infection primarily involves rabbits. However, a diagnosis of tularemia should still be considered in this region in a febrile patient with or without a primary lesion or reported exposure to rabbits. A history of having been bitten by a tick may be the major clue in determining

Optimizing Georgia's public health workforce: a study on demographics, engagement, and capacity building.

BACKGROUND: A well-functioning public health system relies on a robust workforce. Comprehensive data on the workforce, such as number, distribution, and key characteristics, are crucial for evidence-based workforce planning and development. However, few comprehensive public health workforce assessments exist, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Public health reforms over the years and needs identified during the COVID-19 pandemic prompted this assessment in Georgia. METHODS: A survey of the core public health workforce, including employees at central and regional units of the Nati

Detection of Anguillicoloides crassus (Nematoda) and a survey of endohelminths of American eels in Georgia, USA.

The American eel Anguilla rostrata is a catadromous fish with a unique life history; however, parasite surveys of these eels in the southeastern USA are limited. In this study, we surveyed the parasite fauna of 98 American eels collected from the Altamaha and Ocmulgee rivers in Georgia between January 2024 and August 2025. Eels were examined for external and internal parasites. The invasive, pathogenic swim bladder nematode Anguillicoloides crassus was detected in 62 of 98 eels (63.2% prevalence), with all infections occurring in the Altamaha River population. Infected eels harbored up to 21 n
