[Unilateral apraxia of eyelid closure in ischemic stroke: role of the right hemisphere in the emotional gesture communication].

INTRODUCTION: Apraxia of eyelid closure (AEC) is an infrequent disorder that is characterised by the inability to close the eyelids on command, although spontaneous blinking and reflex shutting of the eyes is preserved. Very few cases of unilateral AEC have been reported and no long-term follow-ups have been carried out. We report the case of a patient with unilateral AEC that was followed up over a 3-year period and also discuss the role played by the right hemisphere in this disorder. CASE REPORT" We examined the case of a 67-year-old right-handed male who was admitted because of a parietote

Beyond the moving hand: How gesture meaning shapes visual attention during observation and imitation.

Gestures can convey communicative and socially relevant information, but it remains unclear whether their spatial direction relative to the body modulates visual attention. Previous findings suggest that gestures directed towards the body (TB) may be particularly relevant for socio-cognitive processing. The present study investigated whether gesture direction and meaning modulate visual attention to the face and hand during gesture observation and imitation. Sixty video clips depicted intransitive gestures, pantomimes, and meaningless gestures directed either TB or away from the body (AB). Twe

Spatiotemporal Dual-Channel Interpretable Hybrid Neural Network for HD-sEMG-Based Gesture Recognition.

Accurate gesture recognition is crucial for precision control of upper limb prostheses. High-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG) enhances spatial resolution and information richness of human gesture representation, thus improving myoelectric control of bionic limbs. Recently, deep learning has been increasingly applied to HD-sEMG to enhance gesture recognition performance. However, the black-box nature of neural networks limits their interpretability and model optimization, hindering their practical application. In this paper, we developed a spatiotemporal dual-channel interpretable hyb

Knowledge distillation for sEMG-based gesture recognition: enhancing wearable HMI systems with lightweight models.

Objective. Gesture recognition using surface electromyography (sEMG) is a promising technology for wearable human-machine interaction systems. However, sEMG-based gesture classification models often suffer from performance degradation in cross-user scenarios due to the variability in individual physiological signals. To address this issue, large-scale deep learning algorithms with a great amount of parameters are employed to enhance model generalization and improve recognition performance across different users. However, the use of deep learning models on wearable devices is challenging due to

Vibrotactile Haptic and Gesture Feedback in a Smartwatch for Controlling a Multi-Activity Powered Knee-Ankle Prosthesis.

For powered lower-limb prostheses to be translated from research environments to real-world use, they must be able to perform a variety of daily activities, such as walking on level or ramped surfaces, stair climbing, sitting, and standing. The device must quickly and predictably switch between the modes corresponding to these activities. Multiple methods exist to trigger activity mode transitions, but they can overlook user agency, be slow and cumbersome to enact, lack discretion, or have limited predictability. This work presents a smartwatch application that allows the user to wirelessly co

CS-Net: convolutional spider neural network for surface-EMG-based hybrid gesture recognition.

Objective. In this paper, we propose a novel neural network architecture, the convolutional spider neural network (CS-Net), combined with a transfer learning (TL) strategy, to classify hybrid gestures that integrate wrist postures and hand movements.Approach.The CS-Net framework incorporates diverse surface electromyography (sEMG) features, including raw signals and FFT representations, through a multi-stream information fusion mechanism to enhance classification performance. The proposed TL strategy involves pre-training the model on specific wrist postures and fine-tuning it on the full set o

The Fifth Main Dynamic Factor: Skin Temperature and Its Effects on EMG-Based Gesture Recognition.

Surface electromyography (sEMG) has become a cornerstone for gesture recognition in prosthetic control and human-machine interfaces. However, its performance is often compromised by several dynamic factors, including gesture intensity, limb position, electrode shift, and signal non-stationarities. This work introduces and investigates skin temperature as the "fifth" dynamic factor influencing sEMG-based gesture recognition. Synchronized sEMG, photoplethys-mography (PPG), and inertial measurement unit (IMU) data were recorded from 12 participants without limb differences performing five hand/wr

Improved Prediction of Activities of Daily Living from Wrist Electromyography Using Intermediate Gesture Classification.

The long-term goal of this research is to automatically, remotely, and noninvasively identify Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) using muscle activity at the wrist. Alzheimer's Dementia is a widespread condition affecting patients' memory and ability to care for themselves. A wrist-worn device capable of monitoring precise ADLs could increase patient independence and provide caretakers with detailed information regarding the patient's wellbeing. Here, we investigate the use of an intermediate hand gesture classifying algorithm to predict ADLs using wrist electromyography (EMG). We show that pre

Oriented Alginate-Poly(vinyl alcohol) Electrospun Nanofibers for Multimodal Sensing and Gesture Language Recognition.

Flexible nanofiber sensors have gained substantial attention in extending application scenarios owing to their desirable lightweight, comfort, and breathability. Nevertheless, disorder and uneven dimension issues of nanofibers are the leading concerns in their multifunctional response, which often leads to erratic response signals as well as poor linearity. In this work, a high-performance oriented nanofiber film with a three-dimensional network consisting of alginate sodium, poly(vinyl alcohol), and poly(ethylene oxide) was successfully fabricated by a controllable directional electrospinning

Novel Wearable HD-EMG Sensor With Shift-Robust Gesture Recognition Using Deep Learning.

In this work, we present a hardware-software solution to improve the robustness of hand gesture recognition to confounding factors in myoelectric control. The solution includes a novel, full-circumference, flexible, 64-channel high-density electromyography (HD-EMG) sensor called EMaGer. The stretchable, wearable sensor adapts to different forearm sizes while maintaining uniform electrode density around the limb. Leveraging this uniformity, we propose novel array barrel-shifting data augmentation (ABSDA) approach used with a convolutional neural network (CNN), and an anti-aliased CNN (AA-CNN),

Intact speech-gesture integration in narrative recall by adults with moderate-severe traumatic brain injury.

PURPOSE: Real-world communication is situated in rich multimodal contexts, containing speech and gesture. Speakers often convey unique information in gesture that is not present in the speech signal (e.g., saying "He searched for a new recipe" while making a typing gesture). We examine the narrative retellings of participants with and without moderate-severe traumatic brain injury across three timepoints over two online Zoom sessions to investigate whether people with TBI can integrate information from co-occurring speech and gesture and if information from gesture persists across delays. Gesture meaning modulates the neural correlates of effector-specific imitation deficits in left hemisphere stroke.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies on left hemisphere (LH) stroke patients reported effector-specific (hand, fingers, bucco-facial) differences in imitation performance. Furthermore, imitation performance differed between meaningless (ML) and meaningful (MF) gestures. Recent work suggests that a gesture's meaning impacts the body-part specificity of gesture imitation. METHODS: We tested the hypothesis that the gesture's meaning (ML vs MF) affects the lesion correlates of effector-specific imitation deficits (here: bucco-facial vs arm/hand gestures) using behavioural data and support vector regressi

Selection of the Best Set of Features for sEMG-Based Hand Gesture Recognition Applying a CNN Architecture.

The classification of surface myoelectric signals (sEMG) remains a great challenge when focused on its implementation in an electromechanical hand prosthesis, due to its nonlinear and stochastic nature, as well as the great difference between models applied offline and online. In this work, the selection of the set of the features that allowed us to obtain the best results for the classification of this type of signals is presented. In order to compare the results obtained, the Nina PRO DB2 and DB3 databases were used, which contain information on 50 different movements of 40 healthy subjects

Left parietal cortex transcranial direct current stimulation enhances gesture processing in corticobasal syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Corticobasal syndrome (CBS) is a clinical entity characterized by higher cortical dysfunctions associated with asymmetric onset of levodopa-resistant parkinsonism, dystonia and myoclonus. One of the most typical and distressful features of CBS is limb apraxia, which affects patients in their everyday life. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive procedure of cortical stimulation, which represents a promising tool for cognitive enhancement and neurorehabilitation. The present study investigated whether anodal tDCS over the parietal cortex (PARC),

Left posterior parietal theta burst stimulation affects gestural imitation regardless of semantic content.

OBJECTIVE: Neuro-imaging studies have suggested that the ability to imitate meaningless and meaningful gestures may differentially depend on superior (SPL) and inferior (IPL) parietal lobule. Therefore, we hypothesized that imaging-guided neuro-navigated continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) over left SPL mainly affects meaningless and over left IPL predominantly meaningful gestures. METHODS: Twelve healthy subjects participated in this study. High resolution structural MRI was used for imaging guided neuro-navigation cTBS. Participants were targeted with one train of cTBS in three experi

Dissociating linguistic and non-linguistic gesture processing: electrophysiological evidence from American Sign Language.

A fundamental advance in our understanding of human language would come from a detailed account of how non-linguistic and linguistic manual actions are differentiated in real time by language users. To explore this issue, we targeted the N400, an ERP component known to be sensitive to semantic context. Deaf signers saw 120 American Sign Language sentences, each consisting of a "frame" (a sentence without the last word; e.g. BOY SLEEP IN HIS) followed by a "last item" belonging to one of four categories: a high-close-probability sign (a "semantically reasonable" completion to the sentence; e.g.

Language abilities and gestural communication in a girl with bilateral perisylvian syndrome: a clinical and rehabilitative follow-up.

We present the neuropsychological and linguistic follow-up of a girl with bilateral perisylvian polymicrogyria during 4 years of gestural and verbal speech therapy. Some researchers have suggested that children with bilateral perisylvian polymicrogyria mentally fail to reach the syntactic phase and do not acquire a productive morphology. This patient achieved a mean length of utterance in signs/gestures of 3.4, a syntactic phase of completion of the nuclear sentence and the use of morphological modifications. We discuss the link between gesture and language and formulate hypotheses on the role

Communication profiles of two types of gesture using nonverbal persons with severe to profound mental retardation.

A structured communication sampling procedure was used to measure the form and function characteristics of intentional communication acts produced by nonverbal adults with severe mental retardation. Four "contact" subjects (who communicated only with contact gestures) and 4 "distal" subjects (who used distal as well as contact gestures) participated in this study. All subjects produced communication acts that were coded as initiations, and all subjects produced protoimperative-type communication acts. However, contact subjects produced no protodeclarative-type communication acts, whereas all d
