The association between gingival recession and buccal bone at maxillary anterior teeth.

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession and a thin or absent buccal plate occur frequently at maxillary anterior teeth and necessitate careful treatment planning to prevent future complications. However, the association between these two conditions is unclear and the ability of gingival recession to predict underlying buccal bone deficiencies is unknown. Therefore, the aim of this study is to use clinical and radiographic data to test this association and determine the influence of demographic and clinical parameters on both conditions. METHODS: This investigation comprised a single-center, retrospect

Classification systems for gingival recession and suggestion of a new classification system.

Gingival recession is one of the most usual esthetic concerns associated with the periodontal tissues. Classification of such condition is important to diagnose, determine the prognosis, and frame the treatment plan. Various classifications have been put forward since decades to classify gingival recession. Miller's classification is the widely used classification among all classifications, but certain drawbacks have been noted in this classification. Therefore, an effort is made to review most commonly used classification systems for gingival recession, and their drawbacks further come up wit

Estimating effects of craniofacial morphology on gingival recession and clinical attachment loss.

OBJECTIVES: Evidence on possible associations between facial morphology, attachment loss and gingival recession is lacking. We analysed whether the facial type, which can be described by the ratio of facial width and length (facial index), is related to periodontal loss of attachment, hypothesizing that a broad face might be associated with less gingival recession (GR) and less clinical attachment loss (CAL) than a long face. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from the 11-year follow-up of the population-based Study of Health in Pomerania were used. Periodontal loss of attachment was assessed by GR

Gingival recession: its causes and types, and the importance of orthodontic treatment.

Gingival recession has direct causes and predisposing factors. Orthodontic treatment is able to prevent recession and even contribute to its treatment, with or without periodontal approach, depending on the type and severity of gingival tissue damage. There is no evidence on the fact that orthodontic treatment alone might induce gingival recession, although it might lead the affected teeth (usually mandibular incisors or maxillary canines) to be involved in situations that act as predisposing factors, allowing direct causes to act and, therefore, trigger recession, especially when the buccal b

Reliability study of Mahajan's classification of gingival recession: A pioneer clinical study.

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession defects (GRD) are one of the most commonly encountered conditions for which periodontal treatment is required. Several attempts have been made to classify GRD. Among all the classifications Millers classification for gingival recessions is the most accepted. Recently, several limitations and drawbacks have been pointed out in Miller's classification system. The aim of the present study is to test the reliability of the recently proposed Mahajan's Modification of the Miller's Classification for GRD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All 15 males and 11 females between the a

The pouch and tunnel technique for management of multiple gingival recession defects.

The desire for improved esthetics has increased tremendously over the years. Periodontal plastic surgery deals with regenerative procedures designed to restore form, function and enhance esthetics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of subepithelial connective tissue graft using pouch and tunnel technique as root coverage procedure. Three patients corresponding to a total of 8 sites participated in the study. Maxillary teeth with miller's class I gingival recession were included in the study. All the sites were treated using subepithelial connective tissue graft using pouc

Orthodontic-associated localized gingival recession of lower incisors: who should treat it?

Gingival recession of lower incisors in the young population has become more prevalent in association with the increased uptake of orthodontic treatment. The two main predisposing factors are thin gingival biotype and bone dehiscence caused by labially displaced roots. Management is sometimes challenging, and the achievement of a successful result requires close cooperation between the orthodontist and periodontist. This article proposes a decision tree, which includes both orthodontic and periodontal considerations, to help the clinician in making the correct diagnosis and choosing the most s

Healing of gingival recession following orthodontic treatment: a 30-year case report.

This case report describes the healing of gingival recessions on mandibular incisors resulting from orthodontic treatment of a deep bite malocclusion at a 30-year follow-up observation. The marked improvement in the severe recessions was a consequence of the elimination of the direct trauma, orthodontic intrusion of the affected teeth, and subsequent creeping attachment over time. No periodontal treatment was performed before or after orthodontic treatment.

Evaluation of resorbable membrane in treatment of human gingival isolated buccal recession.

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession in its localized or generalized form is an undesirable condition which results in root exposure. Several different techniques have been described in order to cover the exposed root surface, and increase the dimensions of the keratinized tissue in gingival recession defects. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the result using a bio resorbable membrane for the treatment of human isolated buccal gingival recession. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten patients, i.e. 6 males and 4 females, mean age 34.5 years, with Miller's classification class I or II facial mucogin

Integrated clinical treatment of gingival recession secondary to root perforation: case report.

Among the factors that influence the success of treatment of a root perforation, its location and possibility of contamination are determinant because the interaction of these 2 factors may result in significant periodontal injury. The management of cases of hard-to-reach contaminated perforations depends on the choice of an adequate technique. In the case reported in this article, controlled orthodontic tooth extrusion was successfully performed to treat gingival recession secondary to root perforation. The outcomes showed that this technique preserves the zone of attached gingiva, maintains

Alveolar bone loss and gingival recession due to lip and tongue piercing.

Oral piercing is a practice that has gained acceptance as a sign of individuality, marginality, decoration or group membership. In spite of its banal appearance, as seen in various scientific studies, piercing is not without risks. Complications include infection, bleeding and local trauma, which are frequent enough to raise questions about the safety and dangers of piercing. The case presented here revealed marked gingival recession accompanied by substantial bone loss caused by piercing the lower lip and tongue. Dental practitioners should be aware of the increasing number of patients with p

A promising periodontal procedure for the treatment of adjacent gingival recession defects.

Various clinical reports on the reconstruction of gingival recession defects have been published in the past decade. Several techniques have been used to achieve root coverage, including creation of free gingival grafts, laterally positioned flaps or semilunar coronally positioned flaps, as well as guided tissue regeneration and connective tissue grafting. This article focuses on the importance of connective tissue grafting, combined with a recent approach known as the tunnel procedure, in managing gingival recession defects with a single operation. This procedure originated in 1985 with an en
