BACKGROUND: The impact of climate change on human health is not evenly distributed and is affected by regional geography and vulnerability of the local population. Official statistics that report these uneven impacts are needed to facilitate strategic planning and resource allocation.
PURPOSE: Identify globally defined indicators of the impacts of climate change on human health to inform the design of official statistics.
METHODS: We followed recognized methods guidance for scoping reviews.
RESULTS: Reviewing 4415 unique records, we extracted 73 unique and 33 repeated indicators from 20 sou

Monkeypox (Mpox), a zoonotic disease caused by the Mpox virus (MPXV), has re-emerged as a significant global health concern, particularly since the 2022 outbreaks in non-endemic countries. MPXV shares close virological and genetic similarities with other orthopoxviruses, notably variola virus. The current circulating strains, primarily of clade IIb, exhibit enhanced human-to-human transmissibility. This review synthesizes recent advances in MPXV virology, pathogenesis, molecular evolution, clinical features, and diagnostic techniques. In addition, we highlight the mounting public health challe

Neuroinfectious diseases represent a growing threat to public health globally. Infections of the central nervous system remain challenging to diagnose and treat, partially driven by the fact that a high proportion of emerging pathogens are capable of causing neurological disease. Many of the trends driving the emergence of novel pathogens, including climate change, ecological degradation, urbanization, and global travel, have accelerated in recent years. These circumstances raise concern for the potential emergence of additional pathogens of pandemic potential in the coming years, necessitatin

Students often seek opportunities to enrich their classroom learning. Providing students the chance to engage in research studies or global health projects allows for experiential enrichment. However, the impact on partners and partner sites, financial implications, and equity of student opportunity, as well as the logistical burden potentially placed on multiple parties, all need to be considered. If challenges are minimized, students can make meaningful contributions to projects, be a catalyst for partner engagement, and allow for formative learning.

Antibiotics are among the most important discoveries of the 20th century, having saved millions of lives from infectious diseases. Microbes have developed acquired antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to many drugs due to high selection pressure from increasing use and misuse of antibiotics over the years. The transmission and acquisition of AMR occur primarily via a human-human interface both within and outside of healthcare facilities. A huge number of interdependent factors related to healthcare and agriculture govern the development of AMR through various drug-resistance mechanisms. The emergenc

Air pollution is a leading cause of death globally and has resulted in the loss of millions of healthy years of life. Moreover, the health burden has fallen disproportionately upon people in many low- and middle-income countries, where air quality continues to deteriorate. To assist authorities and civil society in improving air quality, World Health Organization has published the first global update to its 2005 air quality guidelines based on a significantly improved body of evidence. To facilitate the implementation of the World Health Organization Global Air Quality Guideline recommendation

The 2022 global monkeypox (MPX) outbreak is the largest in history to occur outside of endemic African regions. Disease spread during this outbreak has been primarily through human-to-human transmission, with sexual contact being of particular concern. Clinical presentations have commonly featured genital, perianal, and oral lesions associated with sexual activity among men who have sex with men (MSM), who compose the vast majority of MPX cases. This review discusses the epidemiology, clinical features, and evaluation of MPX with regards to men's sexual health. Comparisons were made between MP

Monkeypox is a zoonotic virus belonging to the Orthopoxvirus genus. Previously endemic to Africa, outbreaks have been reported from all over the world, the largest of which is currently ongoing. Dermatologists are principally involved in recognition and diagnosis of the infection. This narrative review primarily focuses on clinical manifestations and highlights the unique epidemiological features of current outbreak. Lesions observed during the current outbreak lack the evolution described in endemic disease. Polymorphic lesions are common and may be confined to anogenital area. Onset of "prod

INTRODUCTION: In global health engagement settings, performance of oncologic surgery is evaluated by understanding the host nation healthcare capacity to include inpatient care support and the available postoperative adjunctive therapy to include chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present a case during Pacific Partnership 2018 of a patientwith a malignant facial mass diagnosed postoperatively. A literature review was conducted, searching specifically for cases related to pleomorphic adenoma (PA), carcinoma ex-PA, cases of misdiagnosis, and global health engagement o

Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is a complication of untreated throat infection by Group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus with a high prevalence among socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. Despite its high incidence and prevalence, RHD prevention is not a priority in major global health discussions. The reasons for the apparent neglect are multifactorial, including underestimated morbidity and mortality burden, underappreciated economic burden, lack of public awareness, and lack of sustainable investment. In this review, we recommend multisectoral collaboration to tackle the burden of RHD b

OBJECTIVE: Rehabilitation services play an important role in optimizing functional ability and societal integration for people with disabilities. The Madagascar Rehabilitation Programme (2011-2013) resulted from a global training partnership and led to 8 doctors achieving a university diploma in rehabilitation medicine. This paper describes a 2014 evaluation of the programme methods, results and learning points.
METHODS: A combination of qualitative methods was used for the evaluation, based on a Theory of Change model, with informants from Madagascar and the UK.
RESULTS: Malagasy trainees a

Chronic pain is the leading cause of years lived with disability globally. Populations in low- and middle-income countries bear a disproportionate burden of chronic pain because of greater exposure to road injuries, interpersonal and political violence, unregulated manual labor and limited access to healthcare. Lessons from the field of global mental health can provide a foundation to begin tackling the global burden of pain. These lessons include the use of task-sharing of front-line psychosocial care to non-specialized health workers; a transdiagnostic approach; use of syndemic models incorp

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) became in the last two decades a global threat to public health systems in the world. Since the antibiotic era, with the discovery of the first antibiotics that provided consistent health benefits to human medicine, the misuse and abuse of antimicrobials in veterinary and human medicine have accelerated the growing worldwide phenomenon of AMR. This article presents an extensive overview of the epidemiology of AMR, with a focus on the link between food producing-animals and humans and on the legal framework and policies currently implemented at the EU level and gl

The global community continues to incur the high costs of crisis mitigation and emergency response to outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases, such as those caused by the H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza virus, Ebola virus, Nipah virus, Zika virus or the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus. These viruses are particularly dangerous in regions associated with poor development indicators and high vulnerability. The drivers of these disease crises include failures in the way that animal diseases are detected and reported and failures in the way in which disease response is impleme
