From pain relief to mucosal grief: A comprehensive review of NSAID enteropathy.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are essential for their analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-pyretic properties. However, their extended use can lead to NSAID enteropathy, a frequently underdiagnosed condition of the small intestine. This pathology manifests as mucosal damage, ulcerations, strictures and increased intestinal permeability, potentially resulting in complications such as bleeding, protein loss and nutrient malabsorption. Modern diagnostic technologies, particularly capsule endoscopy, have revealed that small-bowel injury affects up to 70% of chronic NSAID users, a

Coping With Anticipatory Grief: A Qualitative Study of Parents of Children With Advanced Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Anticipatory grief is a common but understudied phenomenon among parents of children with advanced cancer. Appropriate coping with anticipatory grief may promote better adaptation before and after the death. OBJECTIVE: To explore the anticipatory grief experiences and coping approaches of such parents in Shanghai, China. METHODS: Using Husserlian phenomenology approach, 4 fathers and 16 mothers were interviewed at the Children's Medical Center in Shanghai. The transcripts were analyzed using Colaizzi phenomenological methods. RESULTS: Five themes were developed. The first theme

Nursing Interventions in Primary Care for the Management of Maladaptive Grief: A Scoping Review.

Grief is a natural and self-limited adaptation process to a new reality that emerges after a significant loss (whether real or perceived), with a broad variety of manifestations that exert an impact on a grieving person's health. The study aim was to synthesize the evidence available about the interventions carried out by Primary Health Care nurses, by means of an individual approach to reduce maladaptive grief or maladaptive grief risk. A scoping review was conducted (November and December 2023) through searches in Medline, Cinahl, Web of Science, ProQuest and Scopus using MeSH terms combined

Comparing Public Perceptions of Child and Adult Grief Responses to Familial Incarceration.

Children of incarcerated parents may grieve this loss, yet perceptions of their grief are understudied. Using vignettes varying by age (adult/child) and grief response (prolonged/resilient), we examined differences between perceptions of adults and children grieving parental incarceration. Participants rated grief response appropriateness, comfort providing support, and grief therapy recommendations for the grieving person in the vignette. Participants perceived resilience as more appropriate than prolonged grief [F (1, 224) = 9.02, p = .003, η2 = .04]. Age did not predict outcomes. Recommendi

Psychogenic Dysphagia in an Elderly: A Case of Eating Disorder Due to Trauma and Grief.

Psychogenic dysphagia is a swallowing condition caused by psychological factors rather than structural or physiological disorders such as neurological impairments or physical abnormalities. This condition has a significant impact on a patient's quality of life. Patients should undergo a thorough swallowing evaluation with the involvement of a multidisciplinary team as early intervention leads to satisfactory outcomes. This report presents a case of a 62-year-old female who had severe malnutrition due to psychogenic dysphagia. We evaluated organic and other functional causes of dysphagia, but n

Grief, mourning, and the body: Ritual attention to the death of victims of the dictatorship in Chile.

This study considers the way in which the recovery of the bodies of those who were detained and disappeared under the Pinochet dictatorship not only enables the social recognition of their deaths and the performance of death rituals hitherto obstructed, but also makes it possible to "attend to" their deaths in multiple dimensions. The research draws upon testimonies and records collected during fieldwork for an ongoing anthropological investigation. We observe the different practices that can be associated with the process of "dignification," including the physical demonstrations of affection

Pre-Loss Grief in Caregivers of Older Adults with Dementia with Lewy Bodies.

BACKGROUND: Pre-loss grief increases as dementia advances. Caregivers who experience pre-loss grief face risks to their own physical and psychological health. OBJECTIVE: The study examined factors associated with pre-loss grief in caregivers of older adults with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) to determine whether overall caregiver experiences differ based on the stages of DLB in care recipients. The study also compared pre-loss grief in caregivers of DLB patients with that in caregivers of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementias. METHOD: Using a cross-sectional design, 71

Grieving as a form of learning: Insights from neuroscience applied to grief and loss.

Recent grief research suggests that the influential cognitive stress theory should be updated with evidence from cognitive neuroscience. Combining human and animal neuroscience with attachment theory, we propose that semantic knowledge of the everlasting nature of the attachment figure and episodic, autobiographical memories of the death are in conflict, perhaps explaining the duration of grieving and generating predictions about complications in prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Our gone-but-also-everlasting model emphasizes that grieving may be a form of learning, requiring time and experienti

Grief Symptoms in Relatives Who Experienced Organ Donation Requests in the ICU.

RATIONALE: Studies show that the quality of end-of-life communication and care have a significant impact on the living long after the death of a relative and have been implicated in the burden of psychological symptoms after the ICU experience. In the case of organ donation, the patient's relatives are centrally involved in the decision-making process; yet, few studies have examined the impact of the quality of communication on the burden of psychological symptoms after death. OBJECTIVES: To assess the experience of the organ donation process and grief symptoms in relatives of brain-dead pati

Pharmacological approaches to the treatment of complicated grief: rationale and a brief review of the literature.

Complicated grief (CG) is a common and often under-acknowledged cause of profound impairment experienced after the loss of a loved one. Although both clinical and basic research suggests that pharmacological agents might be of use in the treatment of CG, research on pharmacological approaches to this condition is still scarce. Three open-label trials and one randomized trial on bereavement-related depression suggest that tricyclic antidepressants may be effective, although they may be more efficacious for depressive symptoms than for grief-specific symptoms. Four open-label trials (total numbe

Critical care nurses' experiences of grief in an adult intensive care unit.

AIM: This paper is a report a study of critical care nurses' experiences of grief and their coping mechanisms when a patient dies. BACKGROUND: The goal of patients entering critical care is survival and recovery. However, despite application of advanced technologies and intensive nursing care, many patients do not survive their critical illness. Nurses experience death in their everyday work, exposing them to the emotional and physical repercussions of grief. METHOD: This study adopted a Heideggerian phenomenological approach, interviewing eight critical care nurses. Data collection occurred

Predictors of complicated grief among dementia caregivers: a prospective study of bereavement.

OBJECTIVE: Most family caregivers adapt well to the death of their care recipient relative; however, a sizable minority continues to experience postdeath psychiatric morbidity. The purpose of this study was to better understand why some caregivers manifest clinical levels of complicated grief postdeath. This is the first study to prospectively assess predictors of complicated grief among family caregivers of patients with dementia who experience the death of their care recipient. METHOD: The sample of bereaved caregivers is drawn from a larger study of 1,222 family caregivers providing in-hom

Complicated grief in Bosnian refugees: associations with posttraumatic stress disorder and depression.

Complicated grief is likely to be common among refugee populations exposed to war trauma. However, there have been few studies investigating the traumatic antecedents and correlates of complicated grief in refugees, and the relationship of that symptom pattern with other common disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. We studied Bosnian refugees recruited from a community center in Sydney, Australia, with the sample being supplemented by a snowball method (N = 126; response rate, 86%). Measures included a trauma inventory, the Clinician Administered PTSD Scale (CA

A case for establishing complicated grief as a distinct mental disorder in DSM-V.

In this paper, we contend that complicated grief (CG) constitutes a distinct psychopathological diagnostic entity and thus warrants a place in standardized psychiatric diagnostic taxonomies. CG is characterized by a unique pattern of symptoms following bereavement that are typically slow to resolve and can persist for years if left untreated. This paper will demonstrate that existing diagnoses are not sufficient, as the phenomenology, risk factors, clinical correlates, course, and outcomes for CG are distinct from those of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD),

The role of negative interpretations of grief reactions in emotional problems after bereavement.

This study explored the role of negative interpretations of grief reactions in emotional problems after bereavement, with 234 individuals who had been confronted with the death of a close relative. It was found that negative interpretations of grief reactions were highly associated with the degree to which these reactions were experienced as distressing, the degree to which mourners engaged in avoidance behaviours and the severity of symptoms of traumatic grief and depression, even when controlling for the frequency of grief reactions and the influence of relevant background variables. Further

Coming to terms with grief and loss. Can skills for dealing with bereavement be learned?

To provide optimum patient care, physicians often need to actively work with persons who experience an acute loss or terminal illness. Physicians who are aware of and open to the issues involved in the grief process are likely to maintain healthier lives and be more available to their patients and their patients' loved ones at times of loss. However, physicians must also have a way to process the losses they themselves face. Thus, self-care is an important aspect of grieving for both physician and patients. Although the experience of loss is often painful and emotionally charged, it can provid

Disability does not have to be the grief that never ends: helping patients adjust.

Chronic disability is a major health problem in this country. Many diseases, illnesses, and accidents result in chronic physical or emotional disability. The National Head Injury Foundation reports that 700,000 people annually will require some hospitalization after motor vehicle accidents alone. Of these, 50,000 to 90,000 will never completely return to their previous lifestyles. Thousands more will have to make adjustments to disabilities as a result of other injuries or medical complications. Regardless of its severity or cause, a disability of any sort frequently presents a major adjustmen

[The TRIG (Texas Revised Inventory of Grief) questionnaire. French translation and validation].

Bereavement and mourning are normal reactions to the loss of a loved one, characterized by specific ideas, affects, and behavior, evolving spontaneously towards resolution. This syndrome, classified as a non mental disorder (DSM IV), resembles depression. Up to now, there was no instrument for an objective assessment. The general objective of this work was to present the french version of the Texas Revised Inventory of Grief, or TRIG (Faschingbauer, De Vaul & Zisook, 1981), designed to evaluate the intensity of the reaction to the loss of a loved one. Our population is composed of 154 adults o
