A mathematical model of the ecology of Lyme disease.

A mathematical model of enzootic Lyme-disease transmission in a natural focus is presented. This model is based on the life history of the vector tick Ixodes scapularis Say and the primary reservoir host Peromyscus leucopus. Using this model, the threshold condition for the disease to be able to invade a nonenzootic region is determined as a function of the various possible transmission chains operating throughout the year. These expressions show that the transmission chain in which ticks acquire the disease from mice in the fall and transmit it back to mice as nymphs in the spring is the most

[Studies of the ecology of some blood protozoa of wild small mammals in North Germany (author's transl)].

In 1977 and 1978, 696 small mammals of 9 different species were surveyed for protozoal blood parasites. The following parasites were found: Hepatozoon sylvatici in Apodemus flavicollis, H. erhardovae and Trypanosoma evotomys in Clethrionomys glareolus, T. microti and Babesia microti in Microtus agrestis and T. croicidurae in Crocidura russula. H. erhardovae showed regularly high infection-rates (more than 70%) during all the years in 1977 and 1978. H. sylvatici was found only in 5.6% of the yellow-necked mice from March to October. T. microti and T. evotomys were predominately found in the tim

The Effect of Acute Pulmonary Hypertension on Tricuspid Annular Height, Strain, and Curvature in Sheep.

The tricuspid annulus shows significant alterations in patients with functional tricuspid regurgitation-tricuspid valve dysfunction that is secondary to other diseases such as pulmonary hypertension. Early changes in annular shape and dynamics may provide an understanding of disease mechanisms and could predict disease progression. To gain a mechanistic insight into these early changes we perform a spatially-resolved analysis of the effect of acute pulmonary hypertension on the tricuspid annulus in sheep. To this end, we suture sonomicrometry crystals to the annulus of nine sheep and record th

Influence of Vitreoretinal Surgery on Ocular Surface Dynamics Using Keratograph 5M.

PURPOSE: To evaluate changes of ocular surface dynamics using Keratograph 5M for 3 months after vitreoretinal surgery. METHODS: Eighty-three patients were divided into three groups: phacoemulsification group, vitrectomy group, and combined group. Keratograph 5M was performed for all patients at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after the surgery. Ocular surface dynamics parameters measured by Keratograph 5M, including noninvasive keratograph first tear film breakup time (NifBUT), noninvasive keratograph average tear film breakup time (NiaBUT), and tear meniscus height (TMH) were compared among th

Brain dynamics reflecting an intra-network brain state is associated with increased posttraumatic stress symptoms in the early aftermath of trauma.

Post-traumatic stress (PTS) encompasses a range of psychological responses following trauma, which may lead to more severe outcomes such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Identifying early neuroimaging biomarkers that link brain function to PTS outcomes is critical for understanding PTSD risk. This longitudinal study examines the association between brain dynamic functional network connectivity (dFNC) and current/future PTS symptom severity, and the impact of sex on this relationship. By analyzing 275 participants' dFNC data obtained ~2 weeks after trauma exposure, we noted that brain

Beyond attendance: participation and relational work in planned group recreational activities in a long-term care village setting.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Person-centered care (PCC) has shaped dementia care reforms and informed innovative long-term care models such as care villages. Recreational activities are often seen as a site where PCC is enacted, yet little empirical work has examined how participation in structured activities is enabled, mediated, and constrained through everyday social, relational, and organizational dynamics. This study examines how participation in structured group activities was produced in a care village. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: An ethnographic study was conducted in Canada's first pu

Residential mobility impacts relative risk estimates of space-time clusters of chlamydia in Kalamazoo County, Michigan.

We determine the impact of residential mobility in the prevalence and transmission dynamics of sexually transmitted infections. We illustrate our approach on reported chlamydia infections obtained from the Michigan Disease Surveillance System for Kalamazoo County, USA, from 2006 to 2014. We develop two scenarios, one with fixed residential addresses and one considering residential mobility. We then compare the resulting space-time clusters and relative risk (RR) of infection. The space-time scan statistics showed increased RR in an area with previously low risk of sexually transmitted infectio

Structural distortions due to missense mutations in human formylglycine-generating enzyme leading to multiple sulfatase deficiency.

The major candidate for multiple sulfatase deficiency is a defective formylglycine-generating enzyme (FGE). Though adequately produced, mutations in FGE stall the activation of sulfatases and prevent their activity. Missense mutations, viz. E130D, S155P, A177P, W179S, C218Y, R224W, N259I, P266L, A279V, C336R, R345C, A348P, R349Q and R349W associated with multiple sulfatase deficiency are yet to be computationally studied. Aforementioned mutants were initially screened through ws-SNPs&GO3D program. Mutant R345C acquired the highest score, and hence was studied in detail. Discrete molecular dyna

Glucose and insulin dynamics following low-carbohydrate and low-fat diets in females with lipedema and obesity.

INTRODUCTION: Low-carbohydrate diets (LCDs) have been suggested as a potential treatment option for females with lipedema, due to their superiority in reducing pain, possibly through improvements in insulin dynamics. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this secondary analysis was to compare changes in markers of glucose and insulin dynamics after a low-carbohydrate versus low-fat low-energy diets in females with lipedema and obesity. A secondary objective was to investigate potential associations between changes in glucose and insulin dynamics and changes in pain. METHODS: Females with obesity and

Abnormalities in large-scale brain network dynamics in late-life depression with suicidal ideation: an EEG microstate analysis.

BACKGROUND: Patients with late-life depression (LLD) with suicidal ideation (SI) often have more explicit suicide plans, and suicide attempts among older adults are more highly lethal than in other age groups. Increasing evidence suggests that people with SI in depression exhibit abnormal brain network connectivity; however, the relationship between suicidal ideation in LLD and brain network dynamics is still unclear. METHODS: We recruited patients with LLD and SI (LLD-SI), patients with LLD without SI (LLD-NSI), and age-matched healthy older adults. We collected 64-channel resting state elec

Long-term remnant liver volume dynamics after major hepatectomy for perihilar cholangiocarcinoma following portal vein embolization.

BACKGROUND: Portal vein embolization (PVE) followed by major hepatectomy is a common treatment strategy for patients with perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (PHCC); however, the long-term dynamics of the liver remnant volume (LRV) remain unclear. Here, we report the dynamics of the LRV in patients who underwent hepatectomy following PVE. METHODS: A total of 39 patients with PHCC who underwent right hemihepatectomy or left trisectionectomy with extrahepatic bile duct resection between 2004 and 2021 were enrolled in this study [PVE (n = 27) and non-PVE (n = 12]). Muscle dynamics analysis by clustered categories during jogging in patients with anterior cruciate ligament deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) deficiency (ACLD) tend to have altered lower extremity dynamics. Little is known about the changes in dynamic function and activation during jogging in patients with ACLD. METHODS: Twenty patients with an injured ACL before ACL reconstruction (ACLD group) and nine healthy male volunteers (control group) were recruited. Each volunteer repeated the jogging experiment five times. Based on the experimental data measured, a musculoskeletal multibody dynamics model was employed to simulate the tibiofemoral joint dynamics during jogging. Eig

Development and temporal organization of repetitive behavior in an animal model.

Despite repetitive behaviors being a common feature of a number of clinical disorders and ubiquitous in normative development, little attention has been given to their ontogeny or temporal dynamics. We characterized these features in a mouse model of repetitive behavior to identify discrete trajectories of development and developmental changes in temporal dynamics. Three qualitatively distinct trajectory groups were identified which allowed for an examination of the interaction between temporal organization and developmental trajectory. Significant differences in temporal dynamics were found a

"We Know What We Don't Know" a reflexive synthesis of research and lay knowledge regarding group decision-making in mountaineering.

Groups navigating dynamic and hazardous mountain environments must continuously engage in collective decision-making. However, the assumption that groups naturally make better decisions than individuals is misleading. Groupthink, group polarization, and other social dynamics can impair judgement and lead to sub-optimal or even dangerous outcomes, making group decision-making a critical factor for safety in mountaineering. This scoping review maps the existing research on group decision-making in mountaineering using a systematic literature search complemented by reflexive thematic analysis. Fr

Photoisomerization of Spiropyran in Solution: A Surface Hopping Investigation.

We performed a computational investigation of the photoisomerization of an unsubstituted spiropyran in solution using surface hopping molecular dynamics simulations in a semiempirical framework. To bring out the solvent effects on the excited state dynamics, we have run simulations in three different environments: chloroform, methanol, and ethylene glycol. We show that the interaction with a moderately polar solvent such as chloroform has little effect on the dynamics when compared to vacuum results previously obtained by our group. At variance, the interaction with the protic solvents conside

Beat-to-beat QT interval dynamics and variability in familial dysautonomia.

Familial dysautonomia (FD) is a disease characterized by dysfunction of the autonomic and sensory nervous systems. During the last five decades, the average life span of patients with FD has increased substantially. Nevertheless, sudden or unexplained death remains the most common cause of death in FD. Recently, our group reported that cardiac remodeling and hypertrophy are common in FD patients. We also described asymptomatic contractile dysfunction in some FD patients. It was speculated that repolarization abnormalities increases the risk of sudden death in patients with FD. However, data re

Bile Flow Dynamics in Patients with Cholelithiasis: An Evaluation with Cine-Dynamic Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography Using a Spatially Selective Inversion-Recovery Pulse.

BACKGROUND: A variety of pathophysiological changes in the biliary system occur in patients with cholelithiasis, but the changes in the bile flow dynamics in those patients remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the changes in the bile flow dynamics in patients with cholelithiasis using cine-dynamic magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) with a spatially selective inversion-recovery (IR) pulse. METHODS: We retrospectively examined 25 patients with gallstones (gallstone group) and 69 patients without gallstones (non-gallstone group) who underwent abdominal MRI,

Effects of resveratrol on shedding and pathological dynamics in experimental B. melitensis infection in dexamethasone-treated nonpregnant Boer goats.

Brucellosis constitutes an infectious re-emerging zoonosis. Spread of diseases could be exacerbated by stress-induced immunosuppression. This study evaluated relationship between Brucella melitensis infection, shedding dynamics, dexamethasone-induced stress, pathological alterations and resveratrol ameliorative effects in goats. Twelve nonpregnant goats were divided into four groups A, B, C, and D of three animals each. Groups A and B were administered 107 CFU/mL of B. melitensis ocularly, 21 days prior to 7 days consecutive administration of dexamethasone (2 mg/kg). Group A was further admini

Chaos and complexity in measles models: a comparative numerical study.

Recurrent epidemics of measles in developed countries offer a proving ground for current theories of complicated dynamics in ecological and epidemiological systems. This paper contrasts the basic forced SEIR model for measles with a variety of more complicated and realistic models, showing that variations in seasonal forcing and age-structured mixing patterns can generate a wide range of global dynamics. The well-known chaotic dynamics of the forced SEIR model appear to be absent from more realistic models, suppressed by the buffering effect of a low-risk group of pre-school children. These re
