The NOTOM hypothesis for idiopathic scoliosis: is it nullified by the delayed puberty of female rhythmic gymnasts and ballet dancers with scoliosis?

Nachemson suggested that there are more girls than boys with progressive adolescent idiopathic because of a different timing between skeletal maturation and postural maturation in the sexes during adolescence. We termed Nachemson's concept the neuro-osseous timing of maturation (NOTOM) hypothesis and used it to propose a possible medical treatment for idiopathic scoliosis by delaying puberty through the pituitary using gonadorelin analogues as in idiopathic precocious puberty. The prevalence of scoliosis is reported to be increased in rhythmic gymnasts (RGs) in Bulgaria and in ballet dancers (

A lower extremity strength-based profile of NCAA Division I women's basketball and gymnastics athletes: implications for knee joint injury risk assessment.

This study aimed to provide a comprehensive strength-based physiological profile of women's NCAA Division I basketball and gymnastic athletes; and to make sport-specific comparisons for various strength characteristics of the knee flexor and extensor muscles. A focus on antagonist muscle balance (hamstrings-to-quadriceps ratios, H:Q) was used to elucidate vulnerabilities in these at-risk female athletes. Fourteen NCAA Division I women's basketball and 13 gymnastics athletes performed strength testing of the knee extensors and flexors. Outcome measures included absolute and relative (body mass

The influence of hand positions on biomechanical injury risk factors at the wrist joint during the round-off skills in female gymnastics.

The aim of this study was to examine the biomechanical injury risk factors at the wrist, including joint kinetics, kinematics and stiffness in the first and second contact limb for parallel and T-shape round-off (RO) techniques. Seven international-level female gymnasts performed 10 trials of the RO to back handspring with parallel and T-shape hand positions. Synchronised kinematic (3D motion analysis system; 247 Hz) and kinetic (two force plates; 1235 Hz) data were collected for each trial. A two-way repeated measure analysis of variance (ANOVA) assessed differences in the kinematic and kinet

Dynamic balance ability during single-leg drop landing across different age groups of junior gymnasts.

[Purpose] Dynamic balance and shock absorption during landing are essential for gymnastics performance and injury prevention; however, age-specific landing biomechanics remain unclear. This study examined age-related differences in dynamic postural control and shock absorption during single-leg drop landing (SDL) among junior gymnasts. [Participants and Methods] Forty junior gymnasts (elementary school: n=12; junior high school: n=12; high school: n=16) performed SDL from a 20-cm platform onto a force plate. Peak vertical ground reaction force (Fz), buffering coefficient, and center of pressur

The Impact of Lower Back Pain on Hip Extension and Lumbosacral Lateral Flexion in Junior Gymnasts during Back-Bending.

We sought to compare the spine and lower limb alignment using inertial measurement units (IMUs) in athletes with and without low back pain (LBP). Fifty junior gymnasts were divided into two groups: those with (n = 12) and without LBP (n = 38). IMU sensors were placed throughout the body. Participants were instructed to perform back-bending. The movements of shoulder, thoracolumbar, lumbosacral, hip, and knee joints were assessed. Additionally, differences between thoracolumbar and lumbosacral joints were evaluated. In the sagittal plane, lumbosacral extension was greater in the no-LBP group (3

Dislocated Posterior Tibial Tendon Treated With Plate Buttress Fixation in a Collegiate Gymnast: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

UNLABELLED: Dislocation of the posterior tibial tendon (PTT) is a rare pathological process that occurs most often as a result of acute trauma. The injury involves forced dorsiflexion and eversion of the foot against a contracted posterior tibialis. Diagnosis of the injury is often difficult secondary to the rarity of the injury and its similarity with other benign injuries of the medial ankle. Routine diagnostic imaging often does not reveal the injury, and advanced imaging with magnetic resonance imaging or ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis is often required. The injury can be a result of

Female patients with late-onset legg-calvé-perthes disease are frequently gymnasts: is there a mechanical etiology for this subset of patients?

BACKGROUND: The cause of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD) is unknown. We have observed a relatively high prevalence of female gymnasts presenting with LCPD. The purpose of this study was to determine: (1) the percentage of LCPD patients exposed to high-level gymnastics training, (2) the demographics of this subset of patients, and (3) their clinical outcomes. METHODS: Several adolescent female gymnasts presented to our clinic with recent-onset LCPD. We reviewed our cases to discern the prevalence and treatment of the disorder in this patient cohort. From 1999 to 2010, 572 patients were evalu

Short stature and delayed puberty in gymnasts: influence of selection bias on leg length and the duration of training on trunk length.

BACKGROUND: Delays in bone age, the onset of puberty, and skeletal growth in gymnasts could be, in part, the reason for an interest in gymnastics, rather than being the result of vigorous exercise. We hypothesized that short stature and delayed bone age are present at the start of gymnastics, and training delays growth, producing short stature, even after retirement. METHODS: Sitting height and leg length were measured in 83 active female gymnasts, 42 retired gymnasts, and 154 healthy control subjects. Results were expressed as age-specific SD scores (mean +/- SEM). RESULTS: In the cross-sec

Occlusal byte and Mézières postural therapy improve pain and performance in elite rhythmic gymnasts with low back pain.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is prevalent among rhythmic gymnastics athletes due to repetitive spinal loading and postural asymmetries. The Mézières Method, a postural re-education approach, aims to restore global muscle balance, while occlusal splints (oral bytes) have been proposed to optimize posture and neuromuscular control. This study investigated the combined and independent effects of postural therapy and oral byte use on pain, function, flexibility, and quality of life in elite rhythmic gymnasts with LBP. METHODS: Eighty-nine gymnasts were screened, and 39 met inclusion criteria a
