Abnormal neural activities in adults and youths with major depressive disorder during emotional processing: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal neural activities during emotional processing have been found in both adults and youths with major depressive disorder. However, findings were inconsistent in each group and cannot be compared to each other. METHODS: We first identified neuroimaging experiments that revealed abnormal neural activities during emotional processing in patients with major depressive disorder published from January 1997 to January 2019. Then we conducted voxel-wise meta-analyses on adult and youth patients separately and compared the two age groups using direct meta-comparison. RESULTS: Fifty

Dynamic network topological properties for classifying primary dysmenorrhoea in the pain-free phase.

BACKGROUND: Primary dysmenorrhoea (PDM) is known to alter brain static functional activity. This study aimed to explore the dynamic topological properties (DTP) of dynamic brain functional network in women with PDM in the pain-free phase and their performance in distinguishing PDM in the pain-free phase from healthy controls. METHODS: Thirty-five women with PDM and 38 healthy women without PDM were included. A dynamic brain functional network was constructed using the slide-window approach. The stability (TP-Stab) and variability (TP-Var) of the DTP of the dynamic functional network were comp

Electroconvulsive therapy modulates functional interactions between submodules of the emotion regulation network in major depressive disorder.

An increasing number of neuroimaging studies have consistently revealed that disrupted functional interactions within the cognitive emotion regulation network (ERN) contribute to the onset of major depressive disorders (MDD). To disentangle the functional reorganization of ERN after electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in MDD is curial for understanding its neuropathology. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data was collected from 23 MDD patients before and after ECT, as well as 25 healthy controls. Network modularity analysis was used to identify the submodules and functional conn

Transcriptome data of temporal and cingulate cortex in the Rett syndrome brain.

Rett syndrome is an X-linked neurodevelopmental disorder caused by mutation in the methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 gene (MECP2) in the majority of cases. We describe an RNA sequencing dataset of postmortem brain tissue samples from four females clinically diagnosed with Rett syndrome and four age-matched female donors. The dataset contains 16 transcriptomes, including two brain regions, temporal and cingulate cortex, for each individual. We compared our dataset with published transcriptomic analyses of postmortem brain tissue from Rett syndrome and found consistent gene expression alterations amo

Abnormal interhemispheric functional interactions in drug-naïve adult-onset first episode psychosis patients.

Previous neuroimaging studies have shown that the cortical functional dysconnectivity contributed to the etiology of schizophrenia (SCZ). However, the interhemispheric functional interactions in SCZ remain not fully understood. The clinical heterogeneity of SCZ might lead to the variations in the findings and the effect of medication had a profound influence on the patient's functional features. In this study, we were aimed at investigating the interhemispheric functional interactions in drug-naïve adult-onset first episode psychosis (FEP) patients. Using voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity

Synaptic Plasticity and Synchrony in the Anterior Cingulate Cortex Circuitry: A Neural Network Approach to Causality of Chronic Visceral Pain and Associated Cognitive Deficits.

Human brain imaging studies have demonstrated the importance of cortical neuronal networks in the perception of pain in patients with functional bowel disease such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).Studies have identified an enhanced response in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) to colorectal distension in viscerally hypersensitive (VH) rats. Electrophysiological recordings show long-lasting potentiation of local field potential (LFP) in the medial thalamus (MT)-ACC synapses in VH rats. Theta burst stimulation in the MT reliably induced long-term potentiation (LTP) in the MT-ACC pathway in n

Efficacy and mode of action of external trigeminal neurostimulation in migraine.

Available preventive drug treatments for migraine lack complete efficacy and often have unpleasant adverse effects. Hence, their clinical utility and therapeutic adherence are limited. Noninvasive neurostimulation methods applied over various peripheral sites (forehead, mastoid, upper arm, cervical vagus nerve) have raised great interest because of their excellent efficacy/tolerance profile. Among them external trigeminal nerve stimulation (eTNS) was first to obtain FDA approval for migraine therapy. Areas covered: All clinical trials of eTNS as preventive or acute migraine treatment published

Increased anterior cingulate cortex response precedes behavioural adaptation in anorexia nervosa.

Patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) are characterised by increased self-control, cognitive rigidity and impairments in set-shifting, but the underlying neural mechanisms are poorly understood. Here we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to elucidate the neural correlates of behavioural adaptation to changes in reward contingencies in young acutely ill AN patients. Thirty-six adolescent/young adult, non-chronic female AN patients and 36 age-matched healthy females completed a well-established probabilistic reversal learning task during fMRI. We analysed hemodynamic responses in em

Changes in functional connectivity of ventral anterior cingulate cortex in heroin abusers.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies with animal experiments, autopsy, structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and task-related functional MRI (fMRI) have confirmed that brain functional connectivity in addicts has become impaired. The goal of this study was to investigate the alteration of resting-state functional connectivity of the ventral anterior cingulate cortex (vACC) in the heroin abusers' brain. METHODS: Fifteen heroin abusers and fifteen matched healthy volunteers were studied using vACC as the region-of interest (ROI) seed. A 3.0 T scanner with a standard head coil was the imagining ap

Assessing the role of cingulate cortex in bipolar disorder: neuropathological, structural and functional imaging data.

OBJECTIVES: Most of the neuroanatomical models of bipolar disorder (BD) propose a key role for the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). We provide here a review of currently available data regarding the CC neuroimaging and neuropathological alterations in BD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After an exploratory search of the MEDLINE, we first identified all English-written articles that provide separate data for BD patients and report original experimental data on cingulate gyrus. Subsequently, we selected those including neuroimaging or neuropathological data. Among the 161 articles updated through June

Assessment of cerebral blood flow findings using 99mTc-ECD single-photon emission computed tomography in patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) is used as an ancillary diagnostic tool in clinical psychiatry. A variety of SPECT studies has been conducted on the findings and the factors that affect the findings, and there is a possibility that age has an effect on cerebral blood flow. We used SPECT to verify the cerebral blood flow findings of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) considering the effect of age on the findings. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective survey of inpatients who fulfilled the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for MDD and who had undergone imaging

Memantine induces heat shock protein HSP70 in the posterior cingulate cortex, retrosplenial cortex and dentate gyrus of rat brain.

High-affinity N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists like MK-801 are known to induce the heat shock protein, HSP70, in the posterior cingulate cortex and retrosplenial cortex of rat brain. Memantine, which is a low affinity uncompetitive NMDA receptor antagonist, has been used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease in Europe. The faster kinetics of memantine in blocking and unblocking the NMDA receptor-operated ion channel as opposed to high-affinity NMDA antagonists like MK-801 has been thought to account for the safety of memantine. The present study evaluated the neurotoxic poten
