Halitosis is a generic term used to describe unpleasant odor emanating from the mouth air and breath, independent of the source where the odor substances originate. It affects between 50 and 65% of the population, but despite its frequency, this problem is often unaccepted and declared as taboo. Ninety percent of patients suffering from halitosis have oral causes: a small, but important percentage, of oral malodor cases have an extra-oral etiology, very often falling into the category of "blood-borne halitosis". Several systemic diseases have been found to provoke malodor or to be a cofactor;

OBJECTIVES: Oral malodor is a common complaint of dental patients, yet limited data is available on the actual prevalence of this condition. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and factors associated with self-reported halitosis in Kuwaiti patients.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of Kuwaiti adults using a 19-point self-administered structured questionnaire on self-perception of halitosis. Significant associations between self-reported oral malodor and sociodemographic, medical history, and oral hygiene variables were examined with multiple logistic regression analysi

OBJECTIVES: Patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) exhibit varying degrees of halitosis. The author speculated that small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) might lead to MASLD and subsequent extra-oral halitosis and aimed to test this hypothesis.
METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study reviewed 885 extra-oral halitosis patients. Halitosis and exhaled dimethyl sulfide (DMS) were measured by organoleptic score (OLS) (0-5) and OralChroma, respectively. SIBO and MASLD were diagnosed by hydrogen breath test and Fibroscan combined with cardiome

OBJECTIVE: This study focused on the metabolic characteristics of tongue coating in patients with intra-oral halitosis (IOH) to investigate potential diagnostic biomarkers for IOH.
METHODS: Oral healthy participants were enrolled in this study. Halitosis was evaluated with an organoleptic assessment, a Halimeter®, and an OralChroma™. Tongue coating samples were collected from 18 halitosis patients and 18 healthy controls. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was conducted to reveal the IOH-related metabolic variations in tongue coating.
RESULTS: A total of 2214 metabolites were obtained.

The features of functional constipation (FC)-associated halitosis were identified in the author's previous report. In this report, the author aimed to further investigate its treatment and efficacy. This retrospective study reviewed 100 FC patients, including 82 (82%) halitosis patients and 18 (18%) non-halitosis patients. They underwent the organoleptic test (OLT) to diagnose halitosis, and the organoleptic score (OLS) (0-5) was used to evaluated halitosis severity. The Cleveland Clinical Constipation Score (CCCS) (0-30) was used to evaluate FC severity. Patients were treated with the laxativ

INTRODUCTION: Halitosis is a common oral health problem that significantly impacts the quality of life of the affected individuals. In most cases, poor oral hygiene is responsible for the problem. Orthodontic therapy aims to correct malocclusion using different devices. It has been suggested that orthodontic treatment can promote gingival health by facilitating daily oral hygiene measures. However, the treatment may harm gingival health as these appliances may lead to a more significant accumulation of plaque, increasing the microbial load in the subgingival environment leading to halitosis.

OBJECTIVES: Parkinson's disease (PD) affects oral health, but prevalence of subjective and objective halitosis and the influence of hyposalivation remain unclear. We aimed to explore whether patients with PD suffer from halitosis and to define correlations between halitosis and hyposalivation. We hypothesised that patients with PD suffer more often from halitosis compared to healthy controls, influenced by dry mouth.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjective (halitosis, xerostomia visual analogue scale [VAS], short German Oral Health Impact Profile [OHIPG]-14) and objective scales (e.g., organoleptic

Halitosis is still poorly studied in young adults. The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of self-reported halitosis and associate it with demographic and behavioral factors in young adult dental students. This cross-sectional study was designed as a census of students enrolled in three initial and three final semesters of a dental course in a Brazilian public university. Of 284 eligible students, 257 (90.5%) completed a self-administered questionnaire. Self-reported halitosis was the primary study outcome, and was assessed with the question "do you feel you have bad breath?". Da

As one of the most complex human-associated microbial habitats, the oral cavity harbors hundreds of bacteria. Halitosis is a prevalent oral condition that is typically caused by bacteria. The aim of this study was to analyze the microbial communities and predict functional profiles in supragingival plaque from healthy individuals and those with halitosis. Ten preschool children were enrolled in this study; five with halitosis and five without. Supragingival plaque was isolated from each participant and 16S rRNA gene pyrosequencing was used to identify the microbes present. Samples were primari

An organoleptic assessment of an odor is defined as a method that can measure the strength of target odors and expresses the value in terms of a point or number with reference to a pre-defined organoleptic scale. Organoleptic assessments are performed using different scales and are used widely in industry (e.g. for measuring the effectiveness of anti-odor agents), in research (to discover relationships between bad breath and microbiology of the tongue, or the generation of particular volatile compounds), but it is also a prerequisite for the diagnosis of halitosis in individual patients requir

A breath detector was developed and its clinical application was investigated. 20 patients that included self-halitosis patients and periodontally diseased patients with halitosis were the subjects of this investigation. Measuring by breath detector was tried third time and most high score was taken for one's smell revel. The same time mouth air was analyzed by gas chromatograph. The amount of volatile sulphur compounds in mouth air was made a comparison between the two methods. The intensity of halitosis by olfactory panel were divided into four groups, (-) good, (+/-) slight, (+) warn, (++)

Oral pathogens can produce volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), which is the main reason for halitosis and indicates the risk of periodontitis. High-sensitivity detection of exhaled VSCs is urgently desired for promoting the point-of-care testing (POCT) of halitosis and screening of periodontitis. However, current detection methods often require bulky and costly instruments, as well as professional training, making them impractical for widespread detection. Here, a structural color hydrogel for naked-eye detection of exhaled VSCs is presented. VSCs can reduce disulfide bonds within the network, l
