We performed electromyographic analyses in 12 patients with posterior cruciate ligament-deficient knees to compare electrical activity in the quadriceps, hamstring, and gastrocnemius muscles between the uninjured and involved limbs. Each patient performed concentric isokinetic knee motion at 30 and 60 deg/sec in both limbs separately. Torques in knee extension and flexion and surface electromyograms from the quadriceps, medial hamstring, and medial gastrocnemius muscles were simultaneously recorded. The uninjured limb served as a control for each patient. Before generation of flexion torque, t

After spinal cord injury (SCI), patients spend daily several hours in wheelchairs, sitting on their hamstring muscles. SCI causes muscle atrophy and wasting, which is especially severe after complete and permanent damage to lower motor neurons. A European Union (EU)-supported work demonstrates that electrical fields produced by large electrodes and purpose-developed electrical stimulators recover both quadriceps and hamstring muscles, producing a cushioning effect capable of benefitting SCI patients, even in the worst case of complete and long-term lower motor neuron denervation of leg muscles

Walking electromyography was performed in 12 below-knee amputees, who were amputated for peripheral vascular insufficiency. All were at least 1 year post-surgery and had no problems with the fit of their prostheses. Seven were community walkers and five were limited household ambulators. The quadriceps and hamstring muscles exhibited electrical activity during 60% and 64.7% of the gait cycle, respectively, in the active walkers, compared with 44.6% and 53.8% in the limited walkers. Quadriceps muscle activity was initiated almost 10% earlier in the active walkers, while hamstring muscle initiat

The quadriceps and hamstring muscles of 13 children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy were studied using ramp and sinusoidal stretches at three different muscle lengths. Overall, the hamstring muscles showed greater velocity sensitivity than the quadriceps, with the hamstrings having the lowest reflex velocity and frequency thresholds close to maximum knee extension. At this position, the hemiparetic hamstrings alone showed a weakly significant reduced reflex frequency threshold compared with non-paretic muscles. For all other muscle lengths, non-paretic and hemiparetic muscles displayed similar

Following hamstring strain, rehabilitation is often prolonged and frustrating for the athlete and for the sports medicine clinician. Though the initial treatment of rest, ice, compression and elevation is accepted for muscle strains, no consensus exists for rehabilitation of hamstring muscle strains. This lack of agreement concerning rehabilitation of hamstring injury represents our lack of understanding of the mechanism of injury and the factors that contribute to hamstring strain. A hamstring rehabilitation model is proposed that is based on our current understanding of the aetiological fact

The hamstring muscle complex comprises several biarticular posterior thigh muscles. These muscles originate from the ischial tuberosity and attach distally to the knee. Hamstring muscle injuries are among the most common in the lower extremities of active individuals. Hamstring injuries follow a consistent pattern and medical history, including a sudden, explosive movement (sprinting, kicking, jumping, or lunging). The onset of pain is usually acute in the proximal posterior aspect of the upper thigh. Injured individuals may describe a "pop" or "snap" or a sensation as if someone kicked them i

BACKGROUND: Hamstring muscles are the most frequently reported sites of muscle strain injuries, especially near the bi-articular muscles' myotendinous junction, where aponeurosis provides a connective tissue network linking muscle fibers to the tendon. This study aimed to investigate the reliability and site-specific differences of hamstring aponeuroses under different conditions (formalin and urea) using MyotonPRO.
METHODS: Eight hamstring muscle groups were dissected from four human cadavers (two males and two females) aged 83-93 years. Measurements of the mechanical properties of the apone

OBJECTIVE: Although hamstring injuries are common in athletes, the distribution and location of such injuries have not been well defined. We used MR imaging to determine the frequency of injury by muscle, involvement of one or more muscles, and location of injuries within the musculotendinous unit.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We performed MR imaging on 15 consecutive college athletes with clinically diagnosed acute hamstring injuries. A hamstring injury was diagnosed and located on MR imaging by identifying high signal intensity within the muscle on T2-weighted images.
RESULTS: We found that 10 at

To distinguish between morbidity caused by harvesting semitendinosus and gracilis tendons and morbidity associated with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery, we performed a prospective randomized study using 65 patients who underwent anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using these tendons. The patients underwent either contralateral (N = 34) or ipsilateral (N = 31) graft harvest. For the nonoperated knees in the ipsilateral harvest group, isometric and isokinetic strength of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles increased to approximately 120% of the preoperative value at 12

PURPOSE: The potential mechanisms of hamstring strain injuries in athletes are not well understood. The study, therefore, was aimed at understanding hamstring mechanics by studying loading conditions during maximum-effort overground sprinting.
METHODS: Three-dimensional kinematics and ground reaction force data were collected from eight elite male sprinters sprinting at their maximum effort. Maximal isometric torques of the hip and knee were also collected. Data from the sprinting gait cycle were analyzed via an intersegmental dynamics approach, and the different joint torque components were

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relation of hamstring and quadriceps muscle strength and imbalance to hamstring injury using a prospective observational cohort study
METHOD: A total of 102 senior male Australian Rules footballers aged 22.2 (3.6) years were tested at the start of a football season. Maximum voluntary concentric and eccentric torque of the hamstring and quadriceps muscles of both legs was assessed using a Kin-Com isokinetic dynamometer at angular velocities of 60 and 180 degrees/second. Twelve (11.8%) players sustained clinically diagnosed hamstring strains which caused them to miss

We describe a case of late-onset sciatic neuralgia due to cicatricial tethering of the sciatic nerve by a retracted torn hamstring muscle that was successfully treated with percutaneous neurolysis. Ultrasound and MRI showed a chronic complete avulsion of the proximal hamstring complex with fatty atrophy of the retracted hamstring muscles. Dynamic ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging displayed tethering of the retracted hamstring complex to the sciatic nerve caused by cicatricial adhesions. Whereas hamstring injuries are highly prevalent sports injuries, there are only a small number of re

Eccentric training proved to be effective in hamstring injury prevention; however, little is known about effects of eccentric hamstring training at long muscle length on hamstring flexibility. Hence, the aim was to evaluate the effect of eccentric training at long muscle lengths on flexibility and passive properties of the hamstring muscles. 34 physically active young adults were randomized to either the control or intervention group (6 weeks of eccentric hamstring training at long muscle length; control group resumed with their usual activities). Maximal passive hip flexion range of motion (R

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common physical disability in childhood. It is a heterogeneous condition in terms of etiology, motor type and severity of impairments. Clinical impairments, such as increased muscle tone (spasticity), muscle weakness and joint stiffness contribute to the abnormal development of functional activities, including gait.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the popliteal angle to hamstring length after ultrasound guided Incobotulinum toxin A injections for spasticity in CP patients.
METHODS: In this proof-of-concept study, we includ

BACKGROUND: The quadriceps and hamstring muscles play a central role in absorbing impact forces and maintaining dynamic knee stability during landing tasks. Together, these muscle groups also strongly influence knee joint kinematics and kinetics. This study aimed to compare the effects of induced fatigue of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles on the kinematics and kinetics of the knee joint during a single-leg landing in a forward-drop jump task.
METHODS: Of the 108 athletes (aged 20-25 years) randomized to either the quadriceps or hamstring fatigue group, 93 completed the study and were ana

BACKGROUND: Hamstring muscle strain injuries (HMSI) are the greatest injury problem in kicking sports such as Australian Rules Football. Reduced hamstring muscle strength is commonly perceived to be a risk factor for hamstring injury; however, evidence is inconclusive. Testing hamstring strength with the hip and knee at functional angles and assessing endurance parameters may be more relevant for examining the risk of hamstring injury.
OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this prospective study was to examine if reduced hamstring muscle strength assessed with the single leg hamstring bridge (SLHB) w

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament injuries occur frequently in athletics, and anterior cruciate ligament injury prevention programs may decrease injury risk. However, previous prevention programs that include plyometrics use a variety of exercises with little justification of exercise inclusion. Because gluteal and hamstring activation is thought to be important for preventing knee injuries, the purpose of this study was to determine which commonly used plyometric exercises produce the greatest activation of the gluteals and hamstrings.

BACKGROUND: For preventing injury in specific muscles, a targeted warm-up (WU) involving repetitive functional movements may be more effective than a general WU. However, the scientific basis for the commonly recommended six repetitions of active knee extension (AKE) to enhance hamstring flexibility is unclear.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine how the number of AKE repetitions influences hamstring flexibility, specifically by evaluating the effect of a 15-repetition WU protocol in individuals with hamstring tightness.
METHODS: Nineteen healthy young adults with significant hamstring ti

Proximal hamstring tendon avulsions represent the most severe hamstring injury in sports and are typically sustained during stretch-related movements in closed kinetic chain: forced hip hyperflexion combined with knee extension. Here, we present the case study of the right-foot dominant professional football player with a severe proximal hamstring tendon avulsion injury and concomitant lower-grade injuries of hamstring muscle-tendon complex caused by a potentially new football-specific injury mechanism: right-foot backheel pass during forward running (ie, a kick directly backward). This mechan

There has been a substantive change in our lifestyle over the last two decades. The widespread availability of entertaining digital devices created an unhealthy culture of a sedentary lifestyle, with our children hooked to their digital devices for countless hours. The mental and social consequences have been well explored in several studies. Leading a sedentary lifestyle has been shown to be associated with obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and even early death. The adolescent-acquired flatfeet is another addition to the ever-growing list. The lack of physical activities among child
