Evaluating Spelling in Glioma Patients Undergoing Awake Surgery: a Systematic Review.

A main goal of awake surgery is to preserve language in order to facilitate return to work and maintain quality of life. Although spelling has become crucial in daily life, it has received little attention in awake surgery practice. We review assessments of spelling carried out in awake surgery studies, to inspect how current neurofunctional theories of spelling may guide pre-, intra- and post-operative neurosurgical practice. A systematic database search in Embase, Medline, PubMed and Web of Science identified studies reporting on spelling assessment in glioma patients undergoing awake surger

Yin Yang 1 overexpression in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma is associated with B-cell transformation and tumor progression.

UNLABELLED: With advances in intracranial recording techniques, converting speech-related brain activity into commands for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) is becoming increasingly feasible. In this study, we explored the utility of stereoencephalography (sEEG) for decoding covert and overt speech in humans. sEEG data were collected from 11 epilepsy patients undergoing presurgical monitoring, while they performed a set of speech tasks-overt speech, articulated speech, and imagined (inner) speech, as well as a handwriting task. Time- and frequency-domain analyses revealed that each speech condi

[Hand and finger anomalous developmental coordination to write in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity syndrome].

AIM: To present a developmental coordination disorder in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity syndrome (ADHS) characterized by anomalous handwriting posture of hands and fingers. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-five children who presented with ADHS were studied (39 males and 6 females) with ages ranging from 6 to 16 years (average 10.8 years) and an analysis of the position of the hands and fingers during handwriting was made within the context of a complete neurological evaluation. RESULTS: Only 2 of the 6 hyperactive patients showed a discrete anomalous posture of the fingers, with no

Quality assurance, control, and monitoring. The future role of information technology from the Joint Commission's perspective.

In summary, the Joint Commission's current perspective on "quality assurance" in the 1990s includes three different, but complementary, activities: 1) structure and process triennial reviews (Joint Commission surveys); 2) Case-based reviews conducted by professional review organizations and/or other third parties; and 3) a combination of internal and external data-driven improvement systems. All these systems will work best supported by computers and software programs that foster the manipulation and management of data related to quality of care monitoring systems in addition to those in use t

Persistent Idiopathic Mirror Writing in a Right-Handed Healthy Young Woman: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Mirror writing is unusual handwriting, in which the writing is in the opposite direction to normal, with reversed letters can be effortlessly read using a mirror. Studies reported that the condition can occur temporarily during the normal development of writing skills in children, and can also could occur in children with developmental delays. In adults, it can be acquired after a brain lesion. CASE REPORT A right-handed 19-year-old Saudi woman presented with progressive-onset mirror writing in both hands, and with writing both languages, Arabic and English. The condition was transi

Does writing handedness affect neural representation of symbolic number? An fMRI adaptation study.

A key question in the field of numerical cognition is how the human brain represents numerical symbols (e.g., Arabic digits). A large body of research has implicated left parietal regions in symbolic number processing. One possible explanation for this lateralization of neural activity is the handedness of participants. Specifically, participants in neuroimaging research are almost exclusively right-handed. The current study sought to probe whether number representation in the brain is associated with hand preference for handwriting. To address this question, we used functional Magnetic Resona

Translating Interdisciplinary Research on Language Learning into Identifying Specific Learning Disabilities in Verbally Gifted and Average Children and Youth.

The current research was grounded in prior interdisciplinary research that showed cognitive ability (verbal ability for translating cognitions into oral language) and multiple-working memory endophenotypes (behavioral markers of genetic or brain bases of language learning) predict reading and writing achievement in students with and without specific learning disabilities in written language (SLDs-WL). Results largely replicated prior findings that verbally gifted with dyslexia score higher on reading and writing achievement than those with average verbal ability but not on endophenotypes. The

Graphomotor skills in children with prenatal alcohol exposure and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder: A population-based study in remote Australia.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Few studies have examined graphomotor skills in children with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) or fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). METHODS: Graphomotor skills were assessed in 108 predominantly Australian Aboriginal children aged 7.5-9.6 years in remote Western Australia using clinical observations (pencil grasp; writing pressure) and standardised assessment tools (the Evaluation Tool of Children's Handwriting; and the Miller Function and Participation Scales - The Draw-a-Kid Game). Skills were compared between children (i) without PAE, (ii) PAE but not FASD and (iii) FA

Unlocking the silent signals: Motor kinematics as a new frontier in early detection of mild cognitive impairment.

The increasing global prevalence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) necessitates a paradigm shift in early detection strategies. Conventional neuropsychological assessment methods, predominantly paper-and-pencil tests such as the Mini-Mental State Examination and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, exhibit inherent limitations with respect to accessibility, administration burden, and sensitivity to subtle cognitive decline, particularly among diverse populations. This commentary critically examines a recent study that champions a novel approach: The integration of gait and handwriting kinematic

Effects of vertical vibration on passenger activities: writing and drinking.

Two laboratory studies have investigated how handwriting ability and holding a cup of liquid depend on the characteristics of whole-body vertical vibration. The effects of vibration magnitude (0.16 to 2.5 ms-2 r.m.s.), vibration frequency (0.5 to 10 Hz), and vibration duration (2 cycles to 10 s) on handwriting were studied with 20 subjects. Subjects were asked to copy letters of the alphabet by writing on a hand-held surface. Writing speed decreased and subjective ratings of writing difficulty increased with increasing vibration magnitude, particularly in the frequency range 4 to 8 Hz. Writing

Dysgraphia after right hemisphere stroke.

Acquired dysgraphia has been described as a disorder of graphemic selection and spatial temporal disorganization which can exist in isolation or as a component of a broader language or cognitive syndrome. There is little agreement on the locus of writing centers, although select areas within the left hemisphere have been suggested. We describe a patient who had dysgraphia after a right hemispheric stroke. He had no demonstrable signs of limb apraxia or visual field deficit, and only subtle signs of language impairment other than the writing disturbance. Treatment emphasized progressively more

Writing tremor in Parkinson's disease: frequency and associated clinical features.

Action tremor in Parkinson's disease may present in up to 46% of patients, either as postural or kinetic tremor. How action tremor may affect handwriting has been the object of some investigations; however, clinical features of writing tremor in Parkinson's disease are still not well-characterised. One hundred consecutive patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease were included in the study. Demographic and clinical data were collected through a standardized questionnaire. Patients were assessed for the presence of rest, action and writing tremor in on condition. The effect of a standardised

Developmental graphemic buffer dysgraphia in English: A single case study.

A single case study is reported of a 10-year-old, English-speaking boy, L.S., who presented with spelling errors similar to those described in acquired graphemic buffer dysgraphia (GBD). We used this case to evaluate the appropriateness of applying adult cognitive models to the investigation of developmental cognitive disorders. The dual-route model of spelling guided this investigation. L.S. primarily made "letter errors" (deletions, additions, substitutions, transpositions, or a combination of these errors) on words and nonwords and in all input (aural and visual) and output modalities (writ

Developmental dysgraphia: An overview and framework for research.

Developmental deficits in the acquisition of writing skills (developmental dysgraphias) are common and have significant consequences, yet these deficits have received relatively little attention from researchers. We offer a framework for studying developmental dysgraphias (including both spelling and handwriting deficits), arguing that research should be grounded in theories describing normal cognitive writing mechanisms and the acquisition of these mechanisms. We survey the current state of knowledge concerning developmental dysgraphia, discussing potential proximal and distal causes. One con

The impact of developmental dyslexia and dysgraphia on movement production during word writing.

This study investigated how deficits in orthographic processing affect movement production during word writing. Children with dyslexia and dysgraphia wrote words and pseudo-words on a digitizer. The words were orthographically regular and irregular of varying frequency. The group analysis revealed that writing irregular words and pseudo-words increased movement duration and dysfluency. This indicates that the spelling processes were active while the children were writing the words. The impact of these spelling processes was stronger for the children with dyslexia and dysgraphia. The analysis o

Graphology.

This paper outlines the history and highlights the uses of graphology in the health and educational setting. Graphology can be a useful tool in spotting health problems before they become too severe, and is excellent at identifying stress in the individual. Valuable insights into people's characters can be gained allowing a better understanding of ourselves and others. Examples are given in the paper of what to look for generally in assessing health, vitality, energy, willpower and originality. Other examples demonstrating specific deficiencies, such as physical weakness, poor memory, anxiety,

Signature size in the psychiatric diagnosis: a significant clinical sign?

To test the hypothesis that patients' signatures may have a useful potential in making psychiatric diagnoses, the authors conducted a correlation study between signature sizes and psychiatric diagnoses. 252 medical records at St. Louis State Hospital in Missouri, USA, were randomized for the measurement of the signature sizes and assessment of DSM-III diagnoses. Analysis of variance and pair-wise comparison show that the signature size in the manic group is significantly larger than those of any other categories of psychiatric diagnoses (p less than 0.05), and that the signature size of organi
