The performance characteristics of football helmets are currently evaluated by simulating head impacts in the laboratory using a linear drop test method. To encourage development of helmets designed to protect against concussion, the National Operating Committee for Standards in Athletic Equipment recently proposed a new headgear testing methodology with the goal of more closely simulating in vivo head impacts. This proposed test methodology involves an impactor striking a helmeted headform, which is attached to a nonrigid neck. The purpose of the present study was to compare headform accelera

Motorcyclists are vulnerable road users at a particularly high risk of serious injury or death when involved in a crash. In order to evaluate key risk factors in motorcycle crashes, this study quantifies how different "policy-sensitive" factors correlate with injury severity, while controlling for rider and crash specific factors as well as other observed/unobserved factors. The study analyzes data from 321 motorcycle injury crashes from a comprehensive US DOT FHWA's Motorcycle Crash Causation Study (MCCS). These were all non-fatal injury crashes that are representative of the vast majority (8

Sports-related encephalopathies are a growing concern among athletes who have experienced head trauma. Anxiety is heightened for the public and especially among parents of children playing contact sports. The most common neuropsychological conditions are concussions and traumatic encephalopathies. Concussions result from brain traumas that can be asymptomatic, but more serious concussions can include loss of consciousness, neurological abnormalities, and/or posttraumatic amnesias. Repetitive concussions lead to persistent brain pathology, known as chronic traumatic encephalopathies. This gradu

The purpose of this study was to determine whether different types of position-related cranial deformities show changes after completion of head orthosis therapy. We investigated how children's age at the begin of molding helmet therapy affects the duration and long-term stability of treatment. In addition, parental satisfaction with helmet therapy has been investigated.Between 2012 and 2019, 47 patients have been analyzed after undergoing helmet therapy. At the beginning of treatment different disease pattern were classified. Posterior deformational Plagiocephalus defined by a cranial vault i

Fall induced traumatic brain injury (TBI) accounts for approximately 20% of reported TBI in military personnel. Consequently, evaluating military headgear with methods that provide an accurate representation of real-world falls is important to ensuring test fidelity. Guided drop towers aim to provide such a representation, yet are constrained to a single degree-of-freedom and, typically, exclude the mass of the full body from the system. The present work sought to test the hypothesis that guided falls and full dummy falls are kinematically similar. If not, then document key differences and imp

INTRODUCTION: Fall-induced traumatic brain injury (TBI) is considered one of the most serious occupational injuries in construction. Given the frequency of falls from ladders, knowledge of head kinematics during ladder falls to the ground may help inform any potential improvement to construction safety helmet design and improve their protection against head injury. Therefore, the goal of this descriptive study was to measure head kinematics during laboratory-induced ladder falls to the ground.
METHOD: Eighteen young adults wearing a hockey helmet simulated construction tasks that challenged t

OBJECTIVE: To explore head impact magnitude (linear head acceleration and rotational velocity) during heading for four different header types in youth male footballers. A secondary objective was to explore whether head impact magnitude was influenced by player-related factors (i.e. age, neck strength).
DESIGN: An observational field-based research design was utilised for this research.
PARTICIPANTS: 27 youth male footballers (mean age14.81, SD1.88) from one football club.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Peak linear acceleration and peak angular velocity were measured during four different header typ

Although head injuries are common in cycling, exact conditions associated with cyclist head impacts are difficult to determine. Previous studies have attempted to reverse engineer cyclist head impacts by reconstructing bicycle helmet residual damage, but they have been limited by simplified damage assessment and testing. The present study seeks to enhance knowledge of cyclist head impact conditions by reconstructing helmet damage using advanced impact testing and damage quantification techniques. Damage to 18 helmets from cyclists treated in emergency departments was quantified using computed

Reports on penetrating ballistic head injuries in the literature are dominated by case studies of suicides; the penetrating ammunition usually being .22 rimfire or shotgun. The dominating cause of injuries in modern warfare is fragmentation and hence, this is the primary threat that military helmets protect the brain from. When helmets are perforated, this is usually by bullets. In combat, 20% of penetrating injuries occur to the head and its wounding accounts for 50% of combat deaths. A number of head simulants are described in the academic literature, in ballistic test methods for helmets (i

BACKGROUND: During the pandemic outbreak, helmet continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) was widely used as respiratory support for COVID-19 patients, inside and outside of intensive care units. The available literature suggests specific interventions to improve the comfort of patients treated with helmet-CPAP. Few reports are available on the experiences of patients undergoing this treatment.
AIM: This qualitative study aimed to explore the views and recollections of COVID-19 patients undergoing helmet-CPAP.
STUDY DESIGN: We conducted semi-structured interviews with thematic analysis. Pa

Micromobility vehicles (MMVs) have become increasingly popular, particularly in urban areas where infrastructure has improved in recent years to facilitate their use. The purpose of this study was to observe protected bike lanes in 10 zones of Manhattan, NYC to: (1) describe the MMVs in bike lanes by type, phone and helmet use; and (2) document MMV users' responses to obstructions. Approximately 1 in 4 of all riders (260/998) were wearing a helmet. Fewer than 2% were observed using a phone while moving. Fewer than 9% of Citi Bike users were wearing a helmet. In contrast, over one-third of non-

Objective: The division of responsibility in vehicle-two-wheelers accidents reflects the extent to which different fault parties contributed to the occurrence of the accident, with significant differences in the injuries sustained by the riders in accidents where diverse parties were primarily responsible. We want to explore the difference in the severity of injury of riders in different fault parties of accidents so that we can make targeted protection improvements. Methods: In this study, three generalized ordered logit models were established for the total sample (n = 1204), the sample with

BACKGROUND: Quadbikes or all-terrain vehicles are known for their propensity for crashes resulting in injury, disability, and death. The control of these needless losses resulting from quadbike crashes has become an essential contributor to sustainable development goals. Understanding the risk factors for such injuries is essential for developing preventive policies and strategies. The aim of this review was to identify the risk factors associated with quadbike crashes at multiple levels through a systematic review of a wide range of study designs.
METHODS: The study incorporated a mixed-meth

Electric scooters (or e-scooters) are among the most popular micromobility options that have experienced an enormous expansion in urban transportation systems across the world in recent years. Along with the increased usage of e-scooters, the increasing number of e-scooter-related injuries has also become an emerging global public health concern. However, little is known regarding the risk factors for e-scooter-related crashes and injury crashes. This study consisted of a two-phase survey questionnaire administered to a cohort of e-scooter riders (n = 210), which obtained exposure information

Riding an e-scooter under the influence of alcohol is one of the most frequently reported risky behaviours among riders in various countries, especially in the Nordic countries. What is the Number of Alcohol Units perceived to be Safe (NAUS) before riding an e-scooter? Who is more likely to report higher perceived alcohol tolerance before riding an e-scooter? What is the level of risk perception in this transport domain? The current study advances the literature by aiming to address these questions. Using a cross-sectional survey (n = 395) in Trondheim, Norway we developed an integrated model
