Living with Cancer: an Educational Intervention in Cancer Patients Can Improve Patient-Reported Knowledge Deficit.

A cancer diagnosis requires significant information to facilitate health care decision making, understand management options, and health care system navigation. Patient knowledge deficit can decrease quality of life and health care compliance. Surveys were distributed to attendees of the Mayo Clinic "Living with and Surviving Cancer" patient symposium January 2015. Follow-up survey was sent to participants 3 months after the symposium. Surveys included demographic data and patient-reported disease comprehension, symptom burden, desired information, and quality-of-life assessment. Demographics:

Digital Health Literacy in Patients With Common Chronic Diseases: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Digital health technology (DHT) plays an increasingly vital role in managing chronic diseases by enabling patients to actively manage their health. These tools have been shown to improve self-management and adherence to medical advice. However, for DHT to be fully effective, patients with chronic conditions must be digitally literate. The eHealth Literacy Scale (eHEALS), an 8‑item tool with scores ranging from 8 to 40, was developed to assess individuals' perceived ability to find, evaluate, and apply digital health information. Assessing patients' digital health literacy (DHL) and

Beyond Age: Exploring Health Literacy, Well-Being, and Stress Management Among the Elderly.

BACKGROUND: Aging can increase stress, making effective stress management strategies essential for promoting healthy aging. However, many older adults face difficulties because of low health literacy, which negatively impacts their well-being. Few studies have explored the relationship between health literacy, well-being, and stress management. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to examine relationships between health literacy (including digital health literacy), well-being, and stress management among older adults. Specifically, we sought to: (1) assess levels of health and digital health literacy; (2) ex

Mobile App Use among Persons with Fibromyalgia: A Cross-sectional Survey.

Persons with fibromyalgia experience a diverse set of symptoms. Recommendations for management generally focus on multidisciplinary approaches involving multiple modalities. Mobile apps can be an essential component for self-management, yet little is known about how persons with fibromyalgia use mobile apps for health-related purposes. A cross-sectional survey (N = 663) was conducted to understand the real-world use of apps among persons with fibromyalgia. The survey included 2 main foci: 1) eHealth literacy and use of information sources, and 2) mobile app use patterns and preferences for hea

Medical screening and monitoring as noted by the insurance industry.

Medical screening and monitoring have a long and varied history as part of the insurance industry's safety and health relations with its policyholders. Many workers' compensation insurance carriers have assisted policyholder management in understanding the requirements of cost-effective health programs, in planning and undertaking steps necessary to comply with state-of-the-art medical practices, and in locating knowledgeable physicians to supervise employee health systems. Managing employees' health and associated records has become, for many employers, a complex operational and regulatory pr

A satellite infrastructure for health early warning in post-disaster health management.

The risk of epidemics and emerging or re-emerging diseases such as avian flu, tuberculosis, malaria and other vector-borne diseases, is rising. These risks can be contained with prevention, early warning, and prompt management. Despite progress in information technology, communication is still a bottleneck for health early warning and response systems in post-disaster situations. This paper presents Satellites for Epidemiology (SAFE), a component-based interoperable architecture for health early warning that employs satellite, radio, and wireless networks, geographic information systems, integ

Body- and symptom-related concerns in women diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome: A gap in symptom management.

Polycystic ovary syndrome is the most common endocrine disorder among women aged from 18 to 40 years. Its debilitating menstrual/obesity-related symptoms challenge conceptions of femininity. To date, age-related differences in women's body esteem and physicians' symptom management recommendations have not been investigated. Age moderated the relationships between symptom concerns and both sexual attractiveness and physical condition, but only for midlife, not for emerging adult women. Midlife women received holistic management information from physicians, while emerging adult women received we

Three cycles of mobile app design to improve HIV self-management: A development and evaluation study.

OBJECTIVE: Employing three cycles of Design Science Research (DSR) to develop a mobile app 'ESSC (Excellent Self Supervised HIV Care)' to improve self-management among people living with HIV (PLWH). METHODS: This study is based on the DSR framework comprising three iterative cycles. In the Relevance cycle, PLWH participated in a survey of mobile health (mHealth) experiences and needs. In the Rigor cycle, the information-motivation-behavioural skills (IMB) model was applied to foundations of the app, and HIV specialists verified the contents. Experts evaluated the heuristic system and the app
