AIMS: Classic heat stroke is associated with high in-hospital mortality and morbidity. The relation between the ECG findings in heat stroke and the clinical outcomes of these patients has not been studied. The aim of this study was to describe the electrocardiographic features in patients with classic heat stroke and to determine if there is any correlation of ECG findings with in-hospital outcomes.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective study on 50 patients with classic heat stroke during summer months of 2016-2018. All 12-lead electrocardiographic recordings obtained from these patients were

INTRODUCTION: Precipitating factors that contribute to the severity of exertional heat stroke (EHS) are unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of prior illness (PI) on EHS severity.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective clinical record review of 179 documented cases of EHS at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Virginia.
RESULTS: Approximately 30% of EHS cases had a medically documented PI. Anthropometrics (height, weight, body mass index) and commonly associated risk factors for EHS (age, number of days in training, wet bulb globe temperature, sleep patterns) did not

Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is an important process associated with the pathogenesis of multiple organ failure resulting from heat stroke (HS). Alterations in the levels of circulating cytokines during the progression of SIRS have been well established. However, only a small number of studies have demonstrated the responses of lymphocytes during HS, and no studies have investigated immune-regulatory cells, such as regulatory T cells (Tregs). Tregs have been revealed to be important in numerous inflammation-associated diseases, and have exhibited promising therapeutic effects

The hypothalamus may be involved in regulating homeostasis, motivation, and emotional behavior by controlling autonomic and endocrine activity. The hypothalamus communicates input from the thalamus to the pituitary gland, reticular activating substance, limbic system, and neocortex. This allows the output of pituitary hormones to respond to changes in autonomic nervous system activity. Environmental heat stress increases cutaneous blood flow and metabolism, and progressively decreases splanchnic blood flow. Severe heat exposure also decreases mean arterial pressure (MAP), increases intracrania

Background. Acute hepatic failure (AHF) is uncommon as a leading symptom in patients with exertional heat stroke (EHS). Which stage to perform the liver transplantation for severe hepatic failure in EHS is still obscure at clinical setting. The conservative management has been reported to be successful in treating heat-stroke-associated AHF even in the presence of accepted criteria for emergency liver transplantation. Case Presentation. Here, we reported a 35-year-old male who presented with very high transaminases, hyperbilirubinemia, significant prolongation of the prothrombin time, and coma

We report the case of a physically fit young man who presented with severe, life-threatening heat stroke after running a 10 km road race. He had previously received bilateral thoracic sympathectomy for axillary hyperhidrosis at another hospital, and was known to have upper body and limb anhidrosis. Thoracic sympathectomy can result in reduced sweating and disturbed peripheral vascular and heart rate responses. Patients should be warned that these mechanisms may play a role in the development of exertional heat stroke.

A case of heat stroke is described in which the patient presented comatose with a rectal temperature exceeding 42.5 degrees C. Standard external evaporative cooling and iced gastric lavage failed to alter his temperature or mental status. Iced peritoneal lavage brought about a decrease in rectal temperature to 39.4 degrees C and significant improvement in mental status. The patient recovered uneventfully. Techniques of rapid cooling are discussed.

The global increase in the frequency and intensity of heatwaves has substantially elevated the incidence and mortality of Heat stroke (HS), imposing a significant burden on public health systems. Acute kidney injury (AKI), a severe and well-recognized complication of HS, often serves as a primary contributor to mortality in affected patients. Despite considerable research, the exact pathophysiological mechanisms underlying HS-induced AKI and its optimal management strategies remain poorly elucidated. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the current understanding of the etiological f

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of Nafamostat mesylate (NM) in improving survival outcomes among rats subjected to exertional heat stroke.
METHODS: This study involved a cohort of 45 specific pathogen-free (SPF) male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. After successfully inducing exertional heat stroke, the rats were randomly divided into three groups: the Control group (Con, n = 15), the Exertional Heat Stroke group (EHS, n = 15), and the Nafamostat Mesylate group (NM, n = 15). A subset of ten rats from each group was selected for a 72-h survival analysis. Three hours following the successful establ

BACKGROUND: Exertional heat illnesses (EHIs), specifically exertional heat stroke (EHS), are a top cause of nonaccidental death among U.S. laborers. EHS management requires coordination between Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and workplace officials to implement cold water immersion (CWI) and cool first, transport second (CFTS).
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article was to quantify and identify existing statewide EMS guidelines, determine whether statewide EHS guidelines improved outcomes for EHIs in laborers, and examine the odds of laborer EHS fatalities when best practices are present in

A heat stroke (HS) is a medical emergency that can occur when the body is unable to cool itself down after overexertion in a hot condition. It is characterized by a high body temperature (usually greater than 40.5 degrees Celsius or 104.9 degrees Fahrenheit) and altered mental status. HS can cause a wide range of physiological changes in the body, including damage to the brain, heart, liver, kidneys, and muscles. In the case report presented, the patient was a 40-year-old man who developed severe HS. His condition rapidly deteriorated, and he developed multi-organ failure, involving the brain,

BACKGROUND: Heat-related illnesses include symptoms such as heat syncope/cramps, heat exhaustion, and life-threatening heat stroke. Usually, a heat stroke causes cerebellar ataxia, cognitive impairment, dysphagia, and aphasia. We report a very rare case of a patient who developed severe heat stroke complicated by multiple cerebral infarctions.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 80-year-old Asian woman was found lying unconscious at her house, with no air conditioner and closed windows; the highest outside temperature was 36.1 °C. She was brought to our hospital unconscious with a high bladder temperature

Heat stroke (HS) induces a rapid elevation in a number of circulating cytokines. This is often attributed to the stimulatory effects of endotoxin, released from damaged intestine, on immune cells. However, parenchymal cells also produce cytokines, and skeletal muscle, comprising a large proportion of body mass, is thought to participate. We tested the hypothesis that skeletal muscle exhibits a cytokine response to HS that parallels the systemic response in conscious mice heated to a core temperature of 42.4°C (TcMax). Diaphragm and hindlimb muscles showed a rapid rise in interleukin-6 (IL-6) a

The prognosis of heat stroke has considerably improved with a mortality rate drop to 10% when therapeutic measurements including external cooling and aggressive rehydration are adopted. The role of imaging in predicting prognosis is uncertain. Some noted that development of cortical cerebellar atrophy is associated with development of a pancerebellar syndrome, while others suggested that evidence of cerebral cortical damage due to hypoxic-ischemic injury implies a poor prognosis. We observed a 17-year-old female who presented with lost of consciousness and seizure while jogging on a hot summer
