The role of adult romantic attachment in long-term childhood cancer survivors' social relationships and help-seeking.

Childhood cancer survivors (CCS) are at risk for health-related and social challenges that can extend far into adulthood. However, CCS' trajectories are heterogeneous. As a potential influencing factor, the present work investigated adult romantic attachment in conjunction with their relationship perceptions and experiences and help-seeking behavior. CCS (N = 633, aged 24-49 years) were recruited in cooperation with the nationwide German Childhood Cancer Registry (GCCR). Participants underwent a comprehensive medical examination at the study centre. Validated self-report questionnaires (includ

Social resources and alcohol-related losses as predictors of help seeking among male problem drinkers.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether factors other than severity of alcohol-related problems add to the explanation of seeking help for drinking problems. METHOD: Help seeking was investigated by comparing male problem drinkers who applied for treatment with male chronic problem drinkers in the general population. Subjects were selected from an outpatient treatment center (n = 129) and from a panel of the general population (n = 86) in the Netherlands. A shortened version of Cahalan's problem-drinking index, including symptoms, social consequences, health problems and frequency of intoxicat

The Relationship Between Family Dynamics and Help-Seeking and Disclosure of Adolescent Self-Harm and Suicidality: A Population-Representative Study: Relation entre dynamique familiale et recherche d'aide, et dévoilement des actes d'automutilation et de la suicidalité chez les adolescents : étude représentative de la population.

BackgroundFew studies have explored the potential for family dynamics to hinder or promote help-seeking and disclosure behaviours among adolescents who self-harm or experience suicidality. We sought to examine whether family dynamics may influence self-harm-related disclosure to parents or other family members and online help-seeking.MethodsWe identified youths, 14-17 years, in the 2014 Ontario Child Health Study (OCHS) who self-reported past-year suicidal ideation (with or without a suicide plan or past suicide attempt[s]) and/or non-suicidal self-harm. The OCHS is a provincially representati

[Childhood experiences of seeking parental support, social interactions, and interpersonal relationships in adulthood: a cross-sectional study].

Objectives Some young adults often tend to perceive interpersonal relationships and social interactions as stressful, and as such, avoid them. Seeking help from parents and interactions with neighbors during childhood are known to be important in forming positive impressions of people, thereby influencing help-seeking behavior in adulthood. However, it remains unclear how these experiences are related and how they influence interpersonal relationships in adulthood. This study aimed to investigate whether childhood experience(s) of social interactions in the community has any modifying effect o

Terminating the Revolving Cycle of Silence: A Co-Production Study of a Media Campaign Intervention to Encourage Males Affected by Intimate Partner Violence Help-Seeking in Nigeria.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) has profound negative consequences for affected men's physical and mental well-being globally. Yet, limited attention has been given to the coproduction of media campaign interventions with male survivors to promote help‑seeking in Nigeria-an area to which this study makes an original and significant contribution through an intersectionality-informed approach. Ten male participants with lived experience of IPV took part in a focus group discussion in Delta State, Nigeria, and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis guided by intersectionality theory. The pathway to consultation for rheumatoid arthritis: exploring anticipated actions between the onset of symptoms and face-to-face encounter with a healthcare professional.

BACKGROUND: When people first experience symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) they often delay seeking medical attention resulting in delayed diagnosis and treatment. This research assesses behaviours people might engage in prior to, or instead of, seeking medical attention and compares these with behaviours related to illnesses which are better publicised. METHODS: Thirty-one qualitative interviews with members of the general public explored intended actions in relation to two hypothetical RA vignettes (with and without joint swelling) and two non-RA vignettes (bowel cancer and angina). Development of a psychosocial-clinical nomogram to predict delayed medical help-seeking in women with stress urinary incontinence: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Delayed medical help-seeking is a common yet understudied behavior among women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI), potentially worsening symptom burden and diminishing quality of life. While clinical factors have been investigated, the contribution of psychosocial determinants remains poorly defined. This study aimed to identify key predictors and develop a validated nomogram for individualized risk estimation of delayed consultation. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we analyzed electronic health records of 1,400 adult women diagnosed with SUI at a tertiary medical

Cross-cultural validity of the Self-Stigma of Seeking Help (SSOSH) scale: examination across six nations.

Researchers have found that the stigma associated with seeking therapy--particularly self-stigma--can inhibit the use of psychological services. Yet, most of the research on self-stigma has been conducted in the United States. This is a considerable limitation, as the role of self-stigma in the help-seeking process may vary across cultural groups. However, to examine cross-cultural variations, researchers must first develop culturally valid scales. Therefore, this study examined scale validity and reliability of the widely used Self-Stigma of Seeking Help scale (SSOSH; Vogel, Wade, & Haake, 20

Psychosocial burden of discrimination based on sexual orientation in university students-A cross-sectional analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual minority individuals continue to face prejudice and discrimination within medical care and academic settings. This contributes to elevated stress levels, which increases their vulnerability to mental health issues like anxiety and depression. Studies examining the mental health, financial situation, loneliness, and help-seeking behavior of students who have experienced discrimination based on their sexual orientation remain scarce. Therefore, this study aims to address this research gap by assessing mental health outcomes, loneliness, impairment status, income, and help-se

Who will be more likely to seek help? The relationship between suicidal ideation, suicide literacy, attitudes toward suicide and help-seeking intention in male and female adolescents.

Objectives: Among adolescents, suicide is a critical global concern, yet research is limited in low- and middle-income countries. The primary aim of this study is to investigate the interrelations among suicide-related factors (specifically, suicidal ideation, suicide literacy, attitudes toward suicide, and intended help-seeking sources) when experiencing suicidality in Vietnam. Additionally, it examines sex differences across these factors and identifies significant predictors of help-seeking intention for suicidality. Methods: A sample of 2 976 Vietnamese adolescents (mean age = 16.0 years, S

Enhancing help-seeking behaviour among men who have sex with men at risk for sexually transmitted infections: the syn.bas.in randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at increased risk for STIs and mental disorders. Syndemic theory holds that psychosocial issues co-occur and interact, and thus increase sexual risk behaviour. Psychosocial issue identification, referral and management might reduce risk behaviour. METHODS: In the syndemic-based intervention study, an open-label randomised controlled trial, MSM were enrolled at the STI outpatient clinic of the Public Health Service of Amsterdam. We screened participants using validated questionnaires on the following problem domains: alcohol and substance use, se

The relationship between cultural variables and gambling behavior among Chinese residing in Australia.

Cultural variables (e.g., cultural values, acculturation and attitudes towards seeking professional assistance) have been found to play important roles in the initiation and maintenance of numerous mental health and substance related problems. However, there is a significant lack of empirical studies investigating the relationships between these cultural variables and gambling behavior. Thus, this study assessed whether these cultural variables could predict gambling behavior among 233 Chinese residing in Australia. Several questionnaires were used in the study including the South Oaks Gamblin

Awareness of cancer and its associated factors for parents of adolescents and young adults: A cross-sectional study.

Cancer is a common health problem worldwide. Early cancer education for adolescents and young adults (AYAs) is important for the prevention or early detection of cancer. In this questionnaire-based cross-sectional study, we examined the cancer awareness among parents of AYAs. Japanese adults with junior or senior high school children were included in this study. The cancer awareness measure (CAM) was used to assess cancer awareness, and the survey was conducted in December 2021. Warning signs, barriers to seeking help, and risk factors were surveyed using an online anonymous questionnaire. In

Symptom clusters and help-seeking behaviours during neutropenia after autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation: A qualitative study to inform oncology nursing support.

PURPOSE: To explore how adult autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation recipients experience and appraise symptom constellations during neutropenia, and how these appraisals shape help-seeking and interactions with clinicians. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted in an inpatient haematopoietic stem cell transplantation unit in Wuxi, China. Adults aged 18 years or older who had undergone autologous transplantation and were neutropenic were purposively sampled to maximise variation. Semi-structured interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed u

Supporting recovery: Intersections of health, belonging, and help seeking after a campus mass casualty event.

Mass casualty events (MCE), such as campus shootings, can severely impact the mental health of students, faculty, and staff. This study examined the psychological effects of an MCE at a minority-serving institution and explored how sense of belonging, cardiorespiratory fitness, and treatment preferences influenced recovery. To measure the impact of the MCE on mental health an anonymous survey was administered four to five months post-MCE to university students, faculty and staff. Within the survey, participants were asked to retrospectively report their depression (PHQ-9) and anxiety (GAD-7) s

Suicide literacy, suicide stigma, and help-seeking attitudes among men in a university setting in Ireland.

This study sought to explore the relationship between sociodemographic-, mental health-, knowledge-, attitudinal-, and conformity to masculine norms variables with suicide literacy, suicide stigma, and help-seeking attitudes among men in a university setting (n = 471) in Ireland. Multiple linear regression with backward elimination was used to determine the independent variables associated with suicide literacy, suicide stigma, and help-seeking attitudes. Lower suicide literacy was associated with an ethnic minority background, living in a rural community, postgraduate students compared to und
