A Descriptive Qualitative Study of Home Care Experiences in Parents of Children with Tracheostomies.

PURPOSE: The number of pediatric patients who require a long-term tracheal tube at home is gradually increasing. Studies have demonstrated that the parents of these children report high levels of stress, anxiety and other negative emotions as early as shortly after discharge from the hospital. The purpose of this study is to describe the home care experiences of parents of children with tracheostomies during the transition from hospital to home in China to more effectively address their needs. DESIGN AND METHODS: This study used a qualitative descriptive design and face-to-face interviews wit

Greater neurobehavioral deficits occur in adult mice after repeated, as compared to single, mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) accounts for the majority of all brain injuries and affected individuals typically experience some extent of cognitive and/or neuropsychiatric deficits. Given that repeated mTBIs often result in worsened prognosis, the cumulative effect of repeated mTBIs is an area of clinical concern and on-going pre-clinical research. Animal models are critical in elucidating the underlying mechanisms of single and repeated mTBI-associated deficits, but the neurobehavioral sequelae produced by these models have not been well characterized. Thus, we sought to evaluate the be

Metaphors about violence by preservice teachers.

Violence consists of a pattern of coercive behaviors used by a competent adult or adolescent to establish and maintain power and control over another competent adult or adolescent. These behaviors, which can occur alone or in combination, sporadically or continually, include physical violence, psychological abuse, talking, and nonconsensual sexual behavior. Research indicates that different types of violence are used as a means of enforcing discipline in the family and the school context. Children and adolescents who grow up in an environment where violence has a natural place tend to resort t

The psychological impact of sexual abuse: content analysis of interviews with male survivors.

Autobiographical interviews with 26 adult male survivors of childhood sexual abuse were audiotaped, transcribed verbatim and content analyzed to identify common psychological themes. Approximately equal numbers of men were abused by male and female perpetrators, almost half came from disrupted or violent homes and a majority had a history of substance abuse. Fifteen psychological themes were identified: Anger, Betrayal, Fear, Homosexuality Issues, Helplessness, Isolation and Alienation, Legitimacy, Loss, Masculinity Issues, Negative Childhood Peer Relations, Negative Schemas about People, Nega

The pharmacology of sibutramine hydrochloride (BTS 54 524), a new antidepressant which induces rapid noradrenergic down-regulation.

1. Sibutramine hydrochloride (BTS 54 524) has been evaluated in a range of behavioural and biochemical models predictive of potential antidepressant activity. 2. BTS 54 524 exhibited potent activity in acute behavioural tests for detecting potential antidepressants. 3. BTS 54 524 rapidly and potently down-regulated rat cortical beta-adrenoceptors, being effective after only three days of oral administration. 4. BTS 54 524 showed very little activity in a range of experiments predictive of side-effect potential. 5. BTS 54 524 possesses a pharmacological profile which suggests that it may be a p

Prolactin-Releasing Peptide Contributes to Stress-Related Mood Disorders and Inhibits Sleep/Mood Regulatory Melanin-Concentrating Hormone Neurons in Rats.

Stress disorders impair sleep and quality of life; however, their pathomechanisms are unknown. Prolactin-releasing peptide (PrRP) is a stress mediator; we therefore hypothesized that PrRP may be involved in the development of stress disorders. PrRP is produced by the medullary A1/A2 noradrenaline (NA) cells, which transmit stress signals to forebrain centers, and by non-NA cells in the hypothalamic dorsomedial nucleus. We found in male rats that both PrRP and PrRP-NA cells innervate melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) producing neurons in the dorsolateral hypothalamus (DLH). These cells serve

Behavior management of children in the dental office.

One of the first conclusions offered by this article was that behavior management has been a pertinent theme in literature addressing clinical pediatric dentistry. This has been true for much of the twentieth century. Another conclusion stated that this literature generally focuses on the preschool child after the child has acquired sufficient development and maturity that he or she can be communicated to in conversation. It was also pointed out that most general approaches to the subject of behavior management deal with the normal child, which for the purposes of this article can be construed

Abortion and the struggle to be good in the 1970s.

OBJECTIVE: This study used social science methodology to illuminate an important clinical question that had been inaccessible to researchers until the 1970s. The question was what effect did an abortion have on normally rule abiding women. Abortion had been presumed to be illegal until a judicial decision in 1969. In 1972 Australia's first abortion clinic was established, and the participants in this study were the women who attended it in 1974. This study was the first of its kind in Australia. METHOD: Interviews were conducted with 32 women who had a lawful termination of pregnancy and who

The influence of extreme traumatization on body, mind and social relations.

Extreme traumatization affects the individual's relation to others in several social and psychological ways. The post-traumatic experiences are characterized by helplessness, insecurity, anxiety, loss of basic trust, and fragmentation of perspectives on one's own life. Special considerations should be given to the destruction of the ability to regulate negative emotions (extreme fear, distress, anguish, anger, rage, shame) in relation to others and activate internal good and empathic object relations. Destruction of the capacity for symbolization of traumatic experience may threaten the mind w

Understanding the resistance to trauma-informed care: The emotional, relational and ideological challenges of shifting power dynamics in child and youth residential care.

BACKGROUND: Trauma-informed care (TIC) is a relational approach emphasizing safety, attunement, and collaboration. In child and youth residential care, this orientation sits in tension with longstanding compliance-oriented approaches that rely on rigid systems of incentives and consequences to guide behaviour. OBJECTIVE: This study examines how residential care staff experience the challenges of shifting power dynamics during the transition from compliance-oriented approaches toward relational practice during TIC implementation. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The study was conducted in a large ur

Strain differences in the chronic mild stress animal model of depression.

Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysfunction has been implicated in depression pathology. In the present study, we used a chronic mild stress (CMS) animal model of depression to examine the responses of three strains of rats that have different HPA axis responsiveness; and whether the behavioral changes observed are correlated with changes in hippocampal cell proliferation and survival. In addition, in most of the CMS experiments the rats are kept in singly housed condition. Since rats are social animals we also examined whether prolonged single housing condition affects the behavior

Effects of stressor controllability on psychophysiological, cognitive and behavioural responses in patients with major depression and dysthymia.

BACKGROUND: The experience of uncontrollability and helplessness in the face of stressful life events is regarded as an important determinant in the development and maintenance of depression. The inability to successfully deal with stressors might be linked to dysfunctional prefrontal functioning. We assessed cognitive, behavioural and physiological effects of stressor uncontrollability in depressed and healthy individuals. In addition, relationships between altered cortical processing and cognitive vulnerability traits of depression were analysed. METHOD: A total of 26 unmedicated depressed

Comparison of the phenotype of NK1R-/- mice with pharmacological blockade of the substance P (NK1 ) receptor in assays for antidepressant and anxiolytic drugs.

The phenotype of NK1R-/- mice was compared with that of acute pharmacological blockade of the tachykinin NK1 receptor on sensorimotor function and in assays relevant to depressive illness and anxiety. The dose range for L-760735 and GR205171 that was associated with functional blockade of central NK1 receptors in the target species was established by antagonism of the behavioural effects of intracerebroventricular NK1 agonist challenge in gerbils, mice and rats. The caudal grooming and scratching response to GR73632 was absent in NK1R-/- mice, confirming that the receptor had been genetically

Understanding maltreating mothers: a synthesis of relational trauma, attachment disorganization, structural dissociation of the personality, and experiential avoidance.

Treatment options are limited for families in which the child has severe and intractable disturbances of emotion and behavior, in which there is suspected or confirmed maltreatment by the mother, and in which the mother has her own history of childhood neglect and abuse. This paper proposes a model for understanding maltreatment in mother-child dyads, drawing upon the developmental psychopathology, behavior, and trauma literatures. At the core of this model is the hypothesis that a mother's maltreating behavior arises from unconscious attempts to experientially avoid the reemergence of an atta

Specific role of VTA dopamine neuronal firing rates and morphology in the reversal of anxiety-related, but not depression-related behavior in the ClockΔ19 mouse model of mania.

Lithium has been used extensively for mood stabilization, and it is particularly efficacious in the treatment of bipolar mania. Like other drugs used in the treatment of psychiatric diseases, it has little effect on the mood of healthy individuals. Our previous studies found that mice with a mutation in the Clock gene (ClockΔ19) have a complete behavioral profile that is very similar to human mania, which can be reversed with chronic lithium treatment. However, the cellular and physiological effects that underlie its targeted therapeutic efficacy remain unknown. Here we find that ClockΔ19 mice

Providers' knowledge and perception of xylazine in the unregulated drug supply: a sequential explanatory mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Xylazine is increasingly prevalent in the unregulated opioid supply in the United States. Exposure to this adulterant can lead to significant harm, including prolonged sedation and necrotic wounds. In the absence of literature describing healthcare providers' experiences with treating patients who have been exposed to xylazine, we aimed to explore what gaps must be addressed to improve healthcare education and best practices. METHODS: From October 2023 to February 2024, we conducted a sequential explanatory mixed-methods study, with (1) a quantitative survey phase utilizing conven

Synaptotagmin isoforms differentially regulate glutamate and GABA release in the lateral habenula.

Neurotransmitter co-transmission contributes to diverse physiological processes throughout the mammalian brain, including sensory integration, motivational control, and social behaviors. Projections from the globus pallidus internus (GPi; the entopeduncular nucleus, EPN, in rodents) to the lateral habenula (LHb) are well-characterized by the co-transmission of both GABA and glutamate. These dual-release inputs modulate behavioral states in chronically learned helpless (cLH) rats, influencing both the onset and recovery of pathological phenotypes. Here, we employed confocal 3D reconstructions t

Navigating the Maze of Social Media Disinformation on Psychiatric Illness and Charting Paths to Reliable Information for Mental Health Professionals: Observational Study of TikTok Videos.

BACKGROUND: Disinformation on social media can seriously affect mental health by spreading false information, increasing anxiety, stress, and confusion in vulnerable individuals, as well as perpetuating stigma. This flood of misleading content can undermine trust in reliable sources and heighten feelings of isolation and helplessness among users. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the phenomenon of disinformation about mental health on social media and provide recommendations to mental health professionals that would use social media platforms to create educational videos about mental hea
