The untenability of the sunlight hypothesis of cataractogenesis.

The excess prevalence of cataract in third world countries led early this century to the hypothesis that sunlight causes cataract. The hypothesis, which ignored differences in diet, culture, poverty and prevalence of other diseases such as diarrhoea, received little support until about thirty years ago when biochemical studies were set up to explore the browning of lens proteins, which is a common feature of cataract on the Indian subcontinent. Initially these studies were encouraging in that exposure to sunlight caused some changes seen in cataractous lenses, but eventually the hypothesis was

Molecular dissemination of emerging antibiotic, biocide, and metal co-resistomes in the Himalayan hot springs.

Growing resistance among microbial communities against antimicrobial compounds, especially antibiotics, is a significant threat to living beings. With increasing antibiotic resistance in human pathogens, it is necessary to examine the habitats having community interests. In the present study, a metagenomic approach has been employed to understand the causes, dissemination, and effects of antibiotic, metal, and biocide resistomes on the microbial ecology of three hot springs, Borong, Lingdem, and Yumthang, located at different altitudes of the Sikkim Himalaya. The taxonomic assessment of these

Genetic dissection of cold stress tolerance and yield potential under cold stress in nested synthetic wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) introgression libraries using multi-locus genome-wide association and haplotype analysis.

Cold stress is a major abiotic constraint to wheat production in temperate regions, particularly in the Kashmir Valley of north-western Himalayas, India, where prolonged low temperatures delay growth, reduce yield, and disrupt the rice-wheat cropping system. To address this challenge, we evaluated a panel of 340 nested synthetic hexaploid wheat introgression lines, developed by introgressing allelic diversity from Aegilops tauschii and Triticum durum into bread wheat. The panel was phenotyped for cold stress tolerance, electrolyte leakage index, and yield-related traits across three temperate

Effects on regional brain metabolism of high-altitude hypoxia: a study of six US marines.

Previous studies of brain glucose metabolism in people indigenous to high-altitude environments uncovered two response patterns: Quechuas native to the high Andes of South America sustained modest hypometabolism in most brain regions interrogated, whereas Sherpas, native to the Himalayas and considered by many biologists to be most effectively high-altitude adapted of all humans, showed brain metabolic patterns similar to lowlanders, with no acclimation effects noted. In the present study, the database was expanded to include hypoxia acclimation effects in lowlanders. Positron emission tomogra

Three Decades of Grassland Emergence in the Terai-Duar Savanna and Grasslands Ecoregion: Patterns and Drivers.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Grasslands in the Terai-Duar Savanna and Grasslands ecoregion, located at the base of the Himalayas, are disturbance-dependent ecosystems where grassland loss due to woody encroachment has been reported in recent decades. However, some of this loss is offset by grassland emergence, but the extent and drivers of grassland expansion remain poorly understood. Here, we aim to study the relationship between grassland emergence, ecosystem characteristics, and disturbance factors. METHODS: We analyzed satellite-based land cover classifications (Landsat TM/OLI) from 1988 to 2019

Holed up, but thriving: Impact of multitrophic cryoconite communities on glacier elemental cycles.

Cryoconite holes (water and sediment-filled depressions), found on glacier surfaces worldwide, serve as reservoirs of microbes, carbon, trace elements, and nutrients, transferring these components downstream via glacier hydrological networks. Through targeted amplicon sequencing of carbon and nitrogen cycling genes, coupled with functional inference-based methods, we explore the functional diversity of these mini-ecosystems within Antarctica and the Himalayas. These regions showcase distinct environmental gradients and experience varying rates of environmental change influenced by global clima
