Outcome and serum ion determination up to 11 years after implantation of a cemented metal-on-metal hip prosthesis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Little is known about the long-term outcome of cemented metal-on-metal hip arthroplasties. We evaluated a consecutive series of metal-on-metal polyethylene-backed cemented hip arthroplasties implanted in patients under 60 years of age. METHODS: 109 patients (134 joint replacements) were followed prospectively for mean 9 (7-11) years. The evaluation included clinical score, radiographic assessment, and blood sampling for ion level determination. RESULTS: At the final review, 12 hips had been revised, mainly because of aseptic loosening of the socket. Using revision for

Novel 3D printed integral customized acetabular prosthesis for anatomical rotation center restoration in hip arthroplasty for developmental dysplasia of the hip crowe type III: A Case Report.

RATIONALE: Exact restoration of the rotation center in total hip arthroplasty (THA) is technically challenging in patients with end-stage osteoarthritis due to developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), especially in the Crowe type II and III procedures. The technical difficulty is attributable to the complex acetabular changes. In this study, a novel 3-dimensional (3D) printed integral customized acetabular prosthesis for anatomical rotation restoration in THA for DDH Crowe type III was developed using patient-specific Computer-aided design and additive manufacturing (AM) methods. Use of a long distally fixed intramedullary stem to treat a periprosthetic femoral fracture following total hip arthroplasty using a thrust plate hip prosthesis: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: The thrust plate hip prosthesis (TPP; Zimmer, Winterthur, Switzerland) is a hip prosthesis that is no longer in production. Few reports have focused on periprosthetic fractures following total hip arthroplasty (THA) with the use of a TPP. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a 57-year-old woman with a periprosthetic femoral fracture 13 years after THA with the use of a TPP. A plain radiograph showed a displaced subtrochanteric fracture of the right femur just below the distal tip of the lateral plate without implant loosening. She underwent revision surgery with a long distally fixed

Long-term survival analysis of low back pain onset in patients undergoing hip prosthesis surgery: a Kaplan-Meier study.

INTRODUCTION: Total hip arthroplasty has been associated with the onset of low back pain, which can significantly impact patients' quality of life. However, a detailed evaluation of the time until the onset of long-term low back pain following total hip arthroplasty remains largely unknown. This study aimed to explore the relationship between total hip arthroplasty and the development of long-term lower back pain. Through survival analysis, we examined the time of onset of low back pain in a cohort of patients who underwent the procedure, providing a detailed temporal perspective of this posto

Large femoral bone loss after hip revision using the uncemented proximally porous-coated Bi-Metric prosthesis: 22 hips followed for a mean of 6 years.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Periprosthetic bone loss after uncemented femoral hip revision is a matter of concern. We have used a proximally porous- and hydroxyapatite-coated prosthesis (Bi-Metric) in revision since 1989 and now we report the bone changes. This prosthesis is intended to distribute the forces more evenly and to avoid proximal femoral unloading. METHODS: 22 patients were unilaterally reoperated because of aseptic loosening. Only patients with a healthy contralateral hip were included. Mean age at revision was 69 (55-80) years. Bone defects were graded by Gustilo-Pasternak and Endo-

Long-Term Prosthesis Survival After Total Hip Arthroplasty in Young Women with Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip: A Narrative Review of Instability, Revision Risk, and Reproductive Health Considerations.

Background/Objectives: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) reliably improves pain and function, but implant longevity in women aged ≤50 years is influenced by longer duration of implant use and distinct failure mechanisms. Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a common underlying diagnosis among patients undergoing THA at younger ages and may increase instability risk, while pregnancy after THA remains an important but understudied consideration. Methods: A narrative review of contemporary studies published from January 2000 through January 2026, supplemented by seminal older studies when direc

A Deep Learning-Based Clinical Classification System for the Differential Diagnosis of Hip Prosthesis Failures Using Radiographs: A Multicenter Study.

BACKGROUND: Accurate and timely differential diagnosis of hip prosthesis failures remains a major clinical challenge. Radiographic examination remains the most cost-effective and common first-line imaging modality for hip prostheses, and integrating deep learning has the potential to improve its diagnostic accuracy and efficiency. METHODS: A deep learning-based clinical classification system (Hip-Net) was developed to classify multiple causes of total hip arthroplasty failure, including periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), aseptic loosening, dislocation, periprosthetic fracture, and polyethy

Salvage of a recurrently dislocating total hip prosthesis with use of a constrained acetabular component. A retrospective analysis of fifty-six cases.

Fifty-six constrained acetabular components were placed, between April 1988 and February 1993, in fifty-five patients who had had recurrent dislocations (average, six dislocations; range, two to twenty dislocations) of the femoral component after a previous total hip arthroplasty. All patients had additional factors contributing to the instability of the implant, including absence or disruption of the abductor mechanism, poor health, mental retardation, confusion, and Alzheimer disease. One patient was lost to follow-up. The remaining patients were followed clinically for a minimum of three ye

Outcomes with use of a modular, cementless, tapered and fluted femoral prosthesis in revision hip arthroplasty with mid-term follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: Increasing demand for revision hip arthroplasty (rTHA), particularly among patients with longer life expectancy, necessitates durable femoral implants. The Link MP modular fluted tapered stem lacks granular mid- and longer-term outcome data. METHODS: A retrospective review of 125 rTHA procedures using the Link MP stem was conducted at a UK centre from 2011 to 2025. Demographics, operative details, complications, radiographic migration, and clinical outcomes were analysed, and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis assessed implant survivorship. RESULTS: Median follow-up was 57 months,

Factors governing the healing of Staphylococcus aureus infections following hip and knee prosthesis implantation: a retrospective study of 95 patients.

INTRODUCTION: The prognostic factors for total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) Staphylococcus aureus prosthetic joint infections are poorly known, notably because of the heterogeneous management in terms of both antibiotic administration and adopted surgical strategy. Uniform treatment regimens would make it easier to define the outcome of these S. aureus infections. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 2001 and 2006, 95 patients with a S. aureus joint infection after THA or TKA were treated, strictly following a standardized protocol according to the recommendations of Zimm
