Prevalence and Characteristics of Hoarding Behaviour and Domestic Squalor Among Adults With Mild Intellectual Disability Receiving Residential or Outpatient Care.

BACKGROUND: To date, no studies have examined the prevalence of hoarding behaviour and domestic squalor among individuals with mild intellectual disability. To address this gap, we conducted a prevalence study within a population supported by a medium-sized care organisation in the Netherlands. METHOD: Data were collected on 437 individuals with mild intellectual disability receiving care in residential facilities or through outpatient services. Assessments were conducted using the Hoarding Rating Scale-Interview, the Environmental Cleanliness and Clutter Scale, and the Clutter Image Rating S

Serological survey of anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies in individuals with animal hoarding disorder and their dogs in a major city of Southern Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with hoarding disorder (HD) presented a persistent difficulty in detaching from objects and/or animals. Unhealthy conditions, frequently found in cases of animal HD (AHD), may favour environmental contamination and the spread of zoonotic pathogens. Despite that, only one study of zoonotic diseases in individuals with AHD and their companion animals has been conducted to date. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the seroprevalence of anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies in individuals with AHD and their dogs in a major city of Southern Brazil. METHODS: Blood samples were

Adaptation and psychometric testing of the hoarding rating scale (HRS): a self-administered screening scale for epidemiological study in Chinese population.

BACKGROUND: Hoarding disorder is a chronic and debilitating illness associated with restrictions on activities of daily living, compromised social and occupational functioning, and adverse health outcomes. However, researchers lack a brief and self-administered screening measurement to assess compulsive hoarding in the Chinese speaking population. This study aimed to adapt and validate the Hoarding Rating Scale-Interview (HRS-I) to as a tool for screening compulsive hoarding behavior in Chinese population. METHODS: This study comprised two phases. During Phase 1, the English-language HRS-I wa

Impairment of decision-making cognition in a case of frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) presenting with pathologic gambling and hoarding as the initial symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to use the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) to examine decision-making cognition in a patient with mild frontal variant of frontotemporal dementia (fv-FTD). BACKGROUND: Although fv-FTD may present with bizarre and dramatic behavioral changes, traditional executive tasks are sometimes preserved in patients with mild fv-FTD. Some evidence suggests that tasks assessing decision-making cognition, such as the IGT, may be sensitive to detect cognitive dysfunction in patients with mild fv-FTD. Here, we report a patient with fv-FTD who presented with bizarre behavior incl

Non-immersive virtual environments for the treatment of hoarding disorder: a preliminary randomized controlled trial based on a non-clinical sample.

PURPOSE: Hoarding Disorder (HD) is characterized by persistent difficulty discarding possessions, leading to excessive accumulation and functional impairment. Traditional treatments, based on cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), emphasize motivational enhancement, cognitive restructuring, and exposure-based interventions. However, these methods face challenges, including heightened distress during in vivo exposure and avoidance tendencies. Virtual Reality (VR) has emerged as a promising adjunctive tool, offering immersive, controlled environments for gradual exposure. The current preliminary st

Is it as good as being in person? The effectiveness of a modified clinician facilitated buried in treasures group for hoarding disorder using video teleconferencing.

The COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated the use of video-teleconferencing (VTC) for psychological treatments but VTC effectiveness studies are sparse. We examined treatment outcomes for a modified Buried in Treasures (BIT) group program for hoarding disorder (HD) delivered via VTC. Participants were 10 individuals with HD. Hoarding severity was evaluated at pre, mid, post, and six-month follow-up. Results showed significant decrease in hoarding symptoms over time (with an average decrease of 32%). The dropout rate was low (9%) and 30% of participants were fully recovered at follow-up. These res

Hoarding symptoms are associated with higher rates of disability than other medical and psychiatric disorders across multiple domains of functioning.

BACKGROUND: Hoarding symptoms are associated with functional impairment, though investigation of disability among individuals with hoarding disorder has largely focused on clutter-related impairment to home management activities and difficulties using space because of clutter. This analysis assesses disability among individuals with hoarding symptoms in multiple domains of everyday functioning, including cognition, mobility, self-care, interpersonal and community-level interactions, and home management. The magnitude of the association between hoarding and disability was compared to that of me

Using photo-elicitation and interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore possessions as links to self-concept and the identities of others in hoarding disorder.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to explore the importance of possessions as extensions of self-concept and connections to significant others for people that hoard. DESIGN: A total of 10 participants were recruited through hoarding group treatment programmes. Participants photographed significant possessions in their home and discussed these in semi-structured interviews. RESULTS: Analysis of transcripts using interpretative phenomenological analysis revealed three interrelated superordinate themes: (1) time travels with you; (2) possessions are me, they're a reflection of my life; and

The Role of Public Health in the Development of a Collaborative Agreement with Rural and Semi-urban Partners in Cases of Severe Domestic Squalor and Hoarding.

When confronted with complex situations of hoarding and severe domestic squalor, small municipal communities and their partners frequently feel overwhelmed due to limited resources at their disposal. Stakeholders often report these situations to Public Health Service and seek their support. In order to facilitate more effective and coordinated actions, the main stakeholders involved (municipal, fire, police, public health and the regional health center) must agree on the most appropriate intervention strategies. An agreement providing services for the management of severe cases of domestic squ

Opposing Molecular Programs in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Hoarding: Transcriptome-Wide Association Studies Reveal Distinct Senescence, Complement, and Metabolic Signatures.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and hoarding disorder often co-occur but differ in onset, course, symptoms, and treatment response. This study compared diagnosis-based OCD genetic liability with hoarding-symptom liability, rather than direct expression differences between diagnosed patient groups. METHODS: Large-scale OCD and hoarding genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics were integrated with brain expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) reference panels using a transcriptome-wide association approach. Gene-set enrichment was assessed across s

Psychological mechanism of acceptance and commitment therapy and rational emotive behavior therapy for treating hoarding: Evidence from randomized controlled trials.

Hoarding is a common problem behavior worldwide and is detrimental to the physical and mental health of individuals and groups. Currently, effective interventions for hoarding are cognitive-behavioral therapies, but their post-intervention efficacy is questionable, and the available research does not examine the mediating variables of the effects of interventions on clinical outcomes. Moreover, current research on hoarding has focused on Western countries. Therefore, there is a need to investigate the efficacy of other forms of cognitive behavioral therapy on hoarding as well as other psycholo

Serotonin system genes and hoarding with and without other obsessive-compulsive traits in a population-based, pediatric sample: A genetic association study.

BACKGROUND: Hoarding, originally only considered a symptom of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), is now categorized as a separate disorder in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). We studied candidate serotonergic genes and the distinctness of hoarding in children and adolescents and hypothesized that unique gene variants would be associated with hoarding alone. METHODS: We examined obsessive-compulsive (OC) traits, including hoarding, in a total of 5,213 pediatric participants in the community. We genotyped candidate serotonin genes (5-HTTL

Effect of food availability and leptin on the physiology and hypothalamic gene expression of the golden spiny mouse: a desert rodent that does not hoard food.

Food availability and quality in desert habitats are spatially and temporally unpredictable, and animals face periods of food shortage. The golden spiny mouse (Acomys russatus) is an omnivorous desert rodent that does not hoard food, requiring it to withstand such periods by physiological means alone. In response to food restriction, plasma leptin concentrations, core body temperature, and energy expenditure of the spiny mouse decrease significantly after 24 h, and most spiny mice are able to maintain their body mass to approximately 85% of ad libitum for a prolonged period of time. Both 1-day

Brexpiprazole Treatment in a Child With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Trauma-Associated Hoarding Symptoms: A Case Report.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) frequently present with multiple psychiatric comorbidities, often accompanied by severe emotional dysregulation and behavioral disturbances that complicate diagnosis and treatment. We describe a child with comorbid ASD and ADHD who also met diagnostic criteria for hoarding disorder and separation anxiety disorder and exhibited trauma-related symptoms. The patient showed minimal response to psychotherapy and conventional pharmacological interventions. Although comprehensive multidisciplinary support

The Object Attachment Security Measure: Assessing Convergent and Divergent Validity, Confirmatory Factor Analysis, and Measurement Invariance Across Age, Gender, and Hoarding Severity.

Past research shows strong links between object attachment and hoarding but has relied on poorly validated measures of object attachment. The Object Attachment Security Measure (OASM; David & Norberg, 2022b) was developed to address this limitation. This study evaluates the construct validity and measurement invariance of the OASM across age groups, genders, and hoarding severity. Participants were 777 individuals recruited via Prolific. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the correlated two-factor structure with two subscales: secure object attachment (SOA) and insecure object attachment (

Development of a short and an ultra-brief version of the Saving Inventory-revised (SI-R) for assessing hoarding severity: The SI-R9 and the SI-R3.

Hoarding Disorder (HD) is marked by the inability to discard possessions, and often excessive acquiring, which results in cluttered living spaces that substantially disrupt daily life. While the Saving Inventory-Revised (SI-R) serves as a reliable and valid tool for assessing hoarding severity, its length may preclude routine use. We aimed to develop a valid shorter version of the scale using Item Response Theory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis in a non-selected sample of 2890 individuals and a clinical HD sample of 200 participants, which were divided into test and confirmatory samples in a

Association between fear of COVID-19 and hoarding behavior during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic: The mediating role of mental health status.

Hoarding behavior can effectively improve people's ability to resist risks, so as to reduce the negative effects of risks. However, excessive hoarding behavior will seriously reduce people's quality of life. The COVID-19 pandemic can cause excessive hoarding in a large number of people in a short period of time, and also cause a series of economic problems such as social material shortage. It is unclear how hoarding levels are linked to fear and negative emotions caused by COVID-19 among people of different educational backgrounds and social status. The purpose of this study was to explore the
