Listening to people to cure people: the LpCp - tool, an instrument to evaluate hospital humanization.

BACKGROUND: In the healthcare environment, nowadays, only a few among the available evaluation systems pay enough attention to certain social sustainability aspects. Among these, humanization plays a key role in an environment, like hospitals, where the mental and physical well-being of patients and healthcare operators is crucial. Our research project, known as 'SustHealth', is focused on the deficiencies of the evaluation methodology and aims at developing an assessment system related to a questionnaire-based investigation capable of revealing the most influential conditions and dynamics in

Eugenol as a promising antibiofilm and anti-quorum sensing agent: A systematic review.

The spread of bacterial resistance has become a significant public health concern, resulting in increased healthcare costs, mortality, and morbidity. Phytochemicals such as Eugenol, the major component of Indian clove and cinnamon essential oils, have attracted attention due to their antimicrobial potential. Thus, this systematic review aims to analyze the existing literature on the antibacterial potential of Eugenol concerning its activity against biofilms, bacterial communication systems (quorum sensing - QS), and associated virulence factors. For this, four databases were systematically sea

The future of epilepsy care in the United Kingdom: A roadmap for technology-enabled transformation.

Epilepsy is recognized to be a significant cause of premature mortality, socio-economic distress and poor quality of life in economically developed countries. Despite clear clinical guidelines, epilepsy care is marked by delayed diagnosis, fragmented management, high emergency admission rates, and pronounced health inequalities affecting rural populations, ethnic minority groups, and people with intellectual disabilities. Diagnostic pathways remain inefficient, with prolonged waits for electroencephalography (EEG), low sensitivity of routine investigations, and repeated inconclusive testing. L

Non-contact lung disease classification via orthogonal frequency division multiplexing-based passive 6G integrated sensing and communication.

BACKGROUND: The screening tools for respiratory diseases typically involve spirometry (for asthma and COPD), CT scans (for interstitial lung disease), chest X-rays (for pneumonia and tuberculosis), and sputum analysis (for tuberculosis). METHODS: This work examines a diagnostic approach whereby a subject's chest is radio-exposed to non-ionizing 6G/WiFi multi-carrier radio signals at a frequency of 5.23 GHz. The fact that each respiratory disease modulates the amplitude, frequency, and phase of each radio frequency differently allows us to screen for five respiratory diseases: asthma, chronic

Patient safety incidents in childbirth: analysis of reported cases from 2015 to 2025.

BACKGROUND: Patient safety incidents occur globally, with one in ten hospitalized patients in high-income countries experiencing an adverse event, most preventable. In obstetrics, harm is rare but can have severe consequences, and research highlights human and system errors as key contributors. Incident reporting is essential for identifying risks, yet studies focusing on childbirth-related reports remain limited. AIM: This study aimed to describe the incidents related to childbirth at one birth unit to gain important information about the obstetric safety in Finland. METHODS: A retrospectiv

Positive childbirth experiences in U.S. hospitals: a mixed methods analysis.

Research on maternity care quality in the US often focuses on avoiding adverse events. Positive birth experiences receive less attention. This analysis used a mixed methods approach to identify factors associated with confidence and positive experiences during birth among a national sample of U.S. mothers. Data are from a nationally representative survey of women who delivered a singleton baby in a US hospital in 2005 (N = 1,573). We explored the relationship between confidence, positive birth experiences and socio-demographic characteristics as well as factors related to the clinical encounte

Mortality among Children Aged 1-59 Months in India: Evidence from a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (2009-2024).

BACKGROUND: Mortality among Indian children aged 1–59 months remains a concern, yet evidence arises from hospital and community settings that reflect different populations and metrics. A setting-specific synthesis is needed to clarify mortality trends, causes, and associated factors. METHODS: We reviewed observational studies (2009–2024) on deaths, causes, or risk factors among children aged 1–59 months. Two reviewers independently extracted data. Hospital and community studies were analyzed separately, using setting-specific mortality definitions. Random-effects GLM models pooled mortality an

Differences in the Health Status of Older Adults in Community and Hospital Cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Older adults frequently utilize healthcare services across diverse medical settings to maintain continuity of care. However, data from the hospital records of older adults is often not linked to their health status in community settings, preventing a full understanding of their healthcare needs. METHODS: This study aimed to compare the multidimensional health status (i.e., self-rated health, depression, physical function/activity, mobility, nutrition, lifestyle factors, blood laboratory, and diseases) of older adults between community and hospital cohorts. The goal was to identify

Case study: ED acts quickly after anthrax.

After last year's anthrax attacks, EDs at Capital Health System in Trenton, NJ, had to address decontamination of large numbers of patients. Patients who didn't require decontamination were sent to the hospital's employee health facility so they could bypass the ED. Clinicians, nursing staff, educators, and paramedics were trained in the decontamination process. Direct communication with first responders was established with a portable scanner.

Data security and patient confidentiality: the manager's role.

The maintenance of patient confidentiality is of utmost importance in the doctor patient relationship. With the advent of networks such as the National Health Service Wide Area Network in the UK, the potential to transmit identifiable clinical data will become greater. Links between general practitioners (GPs) and hospitals will allow the rapid transmission of data which if intercepted could be potentially embarrassing to the patient concerned. In 1994 the British Medical Association launched a draft bill on privacy and confidentiality and in association with this bill it is pushing for encryp

Clinical relevance of cytochrome P450-mediated drug-drug interactions in hospitalised older adults: implications for community pharmacy.

Cytochrome P450 (CYP)-mediated drug-drug interactions constitute a relevant safety issue in hospitalised older patients, due to multimorbidity and polypharmacy. The objective was to characterise these interactions and analyse the factors associated with their occurrence. A retrospective observational study was conducted in a cohort of patients aged ≥ 65 years admitted between 2020 and 2023. Data from the electronic prescribing system were analysed using descriptive statistics, bivariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression, evaluating the association between clinically relevant intera

Patterns of parenteral nutrition use in the inpatient setting: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Parenteral nutrition (PN) supports patients unable to absorb sufficient nutrients from their gastrointestinal tracts. Yet, information about the patterns and extent of PN's in-hospital use is lacking. Data on this topic should provide comparison points for nutrition support teams and hospital administrators examining PN use in their institutions. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study using 9 years of routinely collected administrative data from a healthcare system with tertiary care and community hospitals explored the extent, patterns, and trends of PN use in hospitals and indivi
