A post hoc analysis of data from three placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized trials was carried out to determine the efficacy of quetiapine in aggression and hostility in patients with schizophrenia. Quetiapine treatment induced statistically significantly greater improvements in BPRS positive symptom cluster scores and three measures of hostility derived from the BPRS, compared with placebo, in patients symptomatic at baseline. A path analysis showed that the improvements in hostility were highly correlated with improvements in positive symptoms and there was no consistent relationship

This study examined hostility as a predictor of survival in a sample of 1,328 patients who had documented coronary artery disease. After controlling for disease severity, there was a significant interaction between age and hostility. Hostility was significantly associated with poorer survival but only in younger (<61.2 years) patients.

Aside from delusions, hallucinations, and thought disorders, affective disturbances belong to the most prominent symptoms of the schizophrenic process. However, nearly no empirical work has been done on the systematic investigation of the dream affects of patients with schizophrenia. We compared 96 dreams of 19 patients with schizophrenia and an equal number of dreams of 19 healthy controls collected over an 8-week period by means of the Gottschalk-Gleser Analysis Scales. Additionally, central psychopathological syndromes were measured by means of the AMDP-scales each day a patient reported a

This experiment was designed to assess differences in physiological reactivity and recovery to stress among low- and high-hostile men. Specifically, 25 low- and 25 high-hostile undergraduates were identified using the Cook-Medley Hostility Scale (Cook & Medley, 1954). To ensure homogeneity, all subjects were right-handed and had a general right hemibody preference, as indicated by a score of +7 or higher on the Coren, Porac, and Duncan Laterality Test (Corer, Porac, & Duncan, 1979). All subjects underwent a traditional cold-pressor stressor test. Physiological measures--heart rate, systolic bl

Two experiments are reported investigating hostility group by gender effects on heart rate and blood pressure. In experiment 1, 58 males and 59 females were tested with a protocol that included baseline, reaction time with and without harassment, and recovery. In experiment 2, 55 males and 50 females participated in a procedure of baseline, Stroop color--word conflict, anger recall interview, and recovery. Based on Buss-Durkee subscales, genders were divided into high and low neurotic hostility and expressed hostility groups. High expressed hostility was associated with greater diastolic react

23 boys and 13 girls, aged 13 to 17 yr., from two homes for delinquents were given the Thematic Apperception Test. Girls were also given the Rorschach. The 1960 Hafner and Kaplan TAT and Rorschach hostility indices were related to the 1977 Luukkonen indices (aggression-inward, aggression-outward, fantasy-aggression, oral, anal and phallic content), to the Pruitt and Spilka empathy index, and to the Neiger reality index. The TAT hostility index for boys was significantly higher than that for girls; boys expressed more physical and girls more verbal hostility in TAT stories. On the Rorschach, ag

Adolescent boys (N = 128) from a maximum security prison for juvenile offenders were administered a task to assess hostile attributional biases. As hypothesized, these biases were positively correlated with undersocialized aggressive conduct disorder (as indicated by high scores on standardized scales and by psychiatric diagnoses), with reactive-aggressive behavior, and with the number of interpersonally violent crimes committed. Hostile attributional biases were found not to relate to nonviolent crimes or to socialized aggressive behavior disorder. These findings held even when race and estim

The aggression profile of patients with Duodenal Peptic Ulcer (DPU) (n = 39) was assessed by means of five self-rating scales (FAF 1, FAF 3, PDS-Extp, PDS-Intp, PDS-Dom) and was compared with a matched normal control group (n = 39) and a psychiatric outpatient sample (n = 67). The DPU group scored significantly higher than normal controls on aggressive excitability and extrapunitiveness (trend in the same direction for potential aggressions), and significantly lower than the psychiatric group on potential aggressions and intropunitiveness. Contrary to expectations, DPU patients did not differ

The relationship of Cook Medley hostility scores (Ho) to blood pressure and heart rate reactivity was examined in 56 women and 56 men. Stress was elicited by an unsolvable anagram task that was described as easily solvable. Both men and women scoring high on Ho had greater blood pressure responses to the task. Those scoring high on Ho also reported more anger in response to the tasks, but anger was not associated with blood pressure reactivity. It was concluded that situations evoking suspiciousness and mistrust rather than anger may be necessary to elicit increased blood pressure reactivity a

Previous research has linked various measures of hostility to the prevalence and incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD). The present study sought to determine whether some dimensions of hostility are differentially related to angiographically documented severity of coronary artery disease (CAD). Specifically, a hostility measure that correlates with indices of neuroticism was compared with a hostility measure unrelated to neurotic tendencies. For patients 60 years and younger, results were significant, revealing that neurotic hostility was inversely associated with severity of CAD whereas n

Recent negative research findings have raised questions regarding the robustness of the Type A hypothesis. A growing body of evidence suggests that not all aspects of the global Type A behavior pattern are pathogenic, but only those concerned with hostility and anger. Biologic mechanisms responsible for increased risk of coronary disease in persons with high levels of hostility and anger appear to involve increased cardiovascular and neuroendocrine responses to behavioral challenge, and, possibly, inadequate parasympathetic antagonism of sympathetic nervous system effects. Future research shou

BACKGROUND: Stress has a significant influence on the development of depressive symptoms. An individual's coping style and resilience may moderate the symptoms of depression. This study is aimed to investigate the role of coping styles and resilience to depressive symptoms when individuals are facing stress in life based on racial/ethnic and gender differences.
METHODS: Enrolled individuals were assessed using the Unfairness Scale, City Stress Inventory, Cook-Medley Hostility Scale, Conner-Davidson Resilience Scale, and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI).
RESULTS: Three hundred ninety-six indiv

INTRODUCTION: Despite the well-accepted view on the importance of parental warmth and parental hostility for adolescent development, few studies have examined the joint interactive effects of these two key aspects of parenting. Furthermore, research comparing maternal and paternal parenting is limited, with the father-daughter relationship during adolescence remaining one of the more understudied familial contexts. Given that family processes are key for the intergenerational transmission of inequality, these parent-child relationships may be especially important for youth at risk for exposure

(1) Background: Child aggression is not easily reduced as children grow up, and it is a serious problem that can develop into a life of crime if left unaddressed. (2) Methods: This study was conducted among elementary school children and their parents in C and K provinces and D city. Data were collected through a survey. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to analyze parental hostility and each child's self-control and aggression. (3) Results: Child aggression had a significant negative correlation with self-control and a significant positive correlation with parental hostility. In part

New product development is an important driver of sustainable enterprise development. It is necessary to promote the knowledge sharing of heterogeneous individuals such as design, technology, market, and sociologists. This paper discusses the influence of negative individual knowledge management from the perspective of knowledge-sharing hostility and knowledge manipulation on the performance of new product development. To examine our hypotheses, we conducted a questionnaire survey of 438 employees in China. The results show that although knowledge manipulation contributes to individual innovat

People's actions toward a competitive outgroup can be motivated not only by their perceptions of the outgroup, but also by how they think the outgroup perceives the ingroup (i.e., meta-perceptions). Here, we examine the prevalence, accuracy, and consequences of meta-perceptions among American political partisans. Using a representative sample (n = 1,056) and a longitudinal convenience sample (n = 2,707), we find that Democrats and Republicans equally dislike and dehumanize each other but think that the levels of prejudice and dehumanization held by the outgroup party are approximately twice as

Hostility towards outgroups contributes to costly intergroup conflict. Here we test an intervention to reduce hostility towards Muslims, a frequently targeted outgroup. Our 'collective blame hypocrisy' intervention highlights the hypocrisy involved in the tendency for people to collectively blame outgroup but not ingroup members for blameworthy actions of individual group members. Using both within-subject and between-subject comparisons in a preregistered longitudinal study in Spain, we find that our intervention reduces collective blame of Muslims and downstream anti-Muslim sentiments relati

COPD is a disease that can adversely affect patients' psychology. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether COPD patients feel increased hostility, and if hostility is associated with socio-economic factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 203 COPD patients in primary health care services in Greece, using the hostility and direction of hostility questionnaire HDHQ. Patient demographics, smoking habits, body mass index (BMI) and disease grade were also recorded. The results showed significant differences between males and females, with women exhibiting higher hostility (p = 0
