The effects of a low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet and a low-fat diet on mood, hunger, and other self-reported symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of weight loss diets on mood, food cravings, and other self-reported symptoms. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Mood and other symptoms were evaluated by participant self-report using the Atkins Health Indicator Test (AHIT) in individuals undergoing weight loss following either a low-carbohydrate, ketogenic diet (LCKD) or a low-fat diet (LFD). Participants were 119 overweight community volunteers randomized to an LCKD or an LFD. An additional 51 participants who had completed an earlier trial contributed data for the psychometric analyses but were not inc

Cortisol, hunger, and desire to binge eat following a cold stress test in obese women with binge eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Increased basal cortisol levels have been found in bulimia nervosa. After stress, increased cortisol levels have been associated with increased food intake in healthy women. Therefore, we assessed cortisol, hunger, and desire to binge eat after a cold pressor test (CPT) among women with binge eating disorder (BED). METHODS: Twenty-two obese (body mass index [BMI] = 36.7 +/- 6.5 SD) females (11 non-BED, 11 BED) completed the Zung depression scale and underwent the CPT, hand submerged in ice water for 2 minutes. Over 60 minutes, periodic ratings of hunger and desire to binge eat were

Tirzepatide and Metformin Effects on Hunger and BMI in an Adolescent with Hyperphagia and Severe Obesity due to MC4R Deficiency: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Tirzepatide, a dual glucagon-like peptide-1/glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor agonist, is recently approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity in adults. Melanocortin-4-receptor (MC4R) deficiency is the most common monogenic cause of obesity and presents with hyperphagia and early onset obesity. While tirzepatide seems to be effective in inducing weight loss in adults with MC4R deficiency, its effects on hyperphagia and weight loss in pediatric patients are unexplored. CASE PRESENTATION: A 17-year-old girl was admitted to our specialized obesity

A systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effect of hidden hunger on glycaemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is the most common type of diabetes worldwide, accounting for over 90% of all cases. Micronutrient deficiencies (hidden hunger) are implicated in glycaemic control among T2D patients. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to investigate the association between multiple micronutrient deficiencies and glycaemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). The systematic review and meta-analysis followed the Cochrane Handbook and PRISMA 2020 standards. We searched various databases to identify relevant studies and used a pre-piloted data extraction sheet to gather

The COVID-19 pandemic reveals an unprecedented rise in hunger: The South African Government was ill-prepared to meet the challenge.

Recent research has shown increasing household food and nutrition insecurity in South Africa, indicating weaknesses in the national food system due to historical and current socioeconomic inequalities. The lack of inclusive governance and collaboration among actors and institutions to develop long-term strategies increase the problem. Such weaknesses intensify the government's ill-preparedness to provide food relief during disasters. We drew upon two rounds of the longitudinal University of Johannesburg and the Human Sciences Research Council's COVID-19 Democracy Survey to illustrate how ill-p

Internalised Weight Stigma Moderates the Impact of a Stigmatising Prime on Eating in the Absence of Hunger in Higher- but Not Lower-Weight Individuals.

A considerable body of evidence links internalised weight stigma with higher levels of disordered eating behaviour and cognitions in both normative- and higher-weight populations. However, to date, the impact of internalised weight stigma on objectively measured food intake has not been explored. In the present study, a weight-diverse sample of 158 non-smoking adults (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 n = 72, BMI < 25 kg/m2 n = 86) were recruited to a study on "The effects of hunger and satiety on information processing." Participants first completed a series of online questionnaires, then attended a lab visit i

The multidimensional nature of dyspnoea in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients with chronic respiratory failure: Air hunger, anxiety and fear.

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disorder leading to chronic respiratory failure. Few studies have investigated ALS-related dyspnoea, and none have characterised the emotional distress it inflicts. We hypothesised that ALS-related dyspnoea has a strong affective component that relates to quality of life. METHODS: This prospective, observational study was conducted in 41 ALS patients >18 with chronic respiratory failure and an indication for noninvasive ventilation (NIV). Dyspnoea was assessed using the Multidimensional Dyspnea Profile (MDP) at baseline an

Is hunger important to model in fMRI visual food-cue reactivity paradigms in adults with obesity and how should this be done?

We considered 1) influence of self-reported hunger in behavioral and fMRI food-cue reactivity (fMRI-FCR) 2) optimal methods to model this. Adults (N = 32; 19-60 years; F = 21; BMI 30-39.9 kg/m2) participated in an fMRI-FCR task that required rating 240 images of food and matched objects for 'appeal'. Hunger, satiety, thirst, fullness and emptiness were measured pre- and post-scan (visual analogue scales). Hunger, satiety, fullness and emptiness were combined to form a latent factor (appetite). Post-vs. pre-scores were compared using paired t-tests. In mixed-effects models, appeal/fMRI-FCR resp

[Electric activity of striated muscles of the cervical part of the rabbit esophagus under conditions of hunger, food intake and satiation].

The experiments of free-moving rabbits have shown that the muscles of the proximal zone in the esophageal cervical part functions as the superior esophageal sphincter. In hunger stage the motor unit activity of the sphincter has regular low-amplitude discharge with monomodal distribution of interspike intervals. The process of food satisfaction leads to the appearance of burst-like unit activity with bimodal distribution of interspike intervals. During the food intake reorganization of the motor unit activity of the esophageal cervical part is manifested in characteristic patterns of interspik

Opiate receptor blockade in man reduces 2-deoxy-D-glucose-induced food intake but not hunger, thirst, and hypothermia.

Opioid peptides may act as neuromodulators in the central nervous system to conserve energy stores and water in mammals. To examine this hypothesis in man, the effect of opiate receptor blockade with naloxone on the hunger, thirst, and hypothermic response to 2-deoxy-D-glucose-induced glucoprivic stress was assessed. Opiate receptor blockade decreased stress-induced food intake but did not reduce marked increases in hunger produced by glucoprivation. Naloxone infusions did not change the hypercortisolemic, polydipsic, hypothermic, and thermogenic response to 2-deoxy-D-glucose. While these resu

Different Hunger Experiences for Parents and Their Children in a family: Long-Term Food Insecurity, Parental Psychological Distress, and Harsh Parenting.

Evidence shows that physical violence and verbal aggression toward children is more prevalent in food-insecure families than food-secure families. However, less is known whether such associations are valid when considering food insecurity could be a long-term phenomenon and also different between parents and children. Using the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, results based on latent class analysis and mediation analysis showed that the use of scolding is lowest among families where children experience consistently low food insecurity over time. However, this pattern does not extend to spanking

Estimating the impact of nutritional transition and ending hunger on tuberculosis in 12 high-burden countries: a model-based scenario analysis.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition is a critical determinant of tuberculosis (TB), providing a protective effect at high body mass index (BMI) and incurring an increased risk of TB disease at low BMI. Global nutritional transition and interventions to end hunger could directly affect the TB epidemic in high TB burden countries. METHODS: We constructed dynamic TB transmission models for 12 high TB burden countries with low HIV prevalence. We explicitly accounted for the effects of BMI on TB disease progression and treatment outcomes using a meta-analysis of longitudinal cohort studies, incorporating the ef

The hunger strike in prison: bioethical and medico-legal insights arising from a recent opinion of the Italian national bioethics committee.

This contribution addresses some bioethical and medico-legal issues of the opinion formulated by the Italian National Bioethics Committee (CNB) in response to the dilemma between the State's duty to protect the life and health of the prisoner entrusted to its care and the prisoner's right to exercise his freedom of expression. The prisoner hunger strike is a form of protest frequently encountered in prison and it is a form of communication but also a language used by the prisoner in order to provoke changes in the prison condition. There are no rules in the prison regulations, nor in the laws

Pamidronate administration improves the secondary hyperparathyroidism due to "Bone Hunger Syndrome" in a patient with osteoblastic metastases from prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: The so-called Bone Hunger Syndrome is a metabolic derangement that sometimes complicates the natural history of prostate cancer patients with osteoblastic bone metastases. An excessive bone formation leads to calcium entrapment in bone and the subsequent increase of parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels, in response to calcium demand. PTH elevation stimulates the osteoclasts in sites distant from those involving the tumor, leading to osteomalacia. METHODS: PTH and markers of bone turnover were monitored every 3 weeks, from the start of pamidronate treatment in a prostate cancer patient
