Epidemiology, etiology, and natural treatment of seasonal affective disorder.

There is much more seasonal difference in higher latitudes than in lower latitudes. In a significant portion of the population of the northern United States, the shorter days of fall and winter precipitate a syndrome that can consist of depression, fatigue, hypersomnolence, hyperphagia, carbohydrate craving, weight gain, and loss of libido. If these symptoms persist in the winter, abate as the days grow longer, and disappear in the summer, the diagnosis of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) can be made. Many hypotheses exist regarding the biochemical mechanisms behind the predisposition toward

St. John's wort versus placebo in social phobia: results from a placebo-controlled pilot study.

Recognition of social anxiety disorder (social phobia) as a common and disabling condition has led to new advances in its pharmacotherapy. Limitations with selective seroton reuptake inhibitors (side effects) and behavior therapy (scarcity of trained therapists), coupled with the tendency for patients with the disorder to self-medicate with alternative treatments, have led to the interest in Saint John's wort (SJW) (Hypericum perforatum) for this disorder. Although the literature is mixed, SJW has demonstrated efficacy in several double-blind depression trials, and some open-label studies with

[Christmas article: Can gin with herbs induce the vision of Christmas elves?].

INTRODUCTION: The Italian Medieval doctor Thaddeus Florentinus (AD 1210-1295) claimed that herbs could cure or relieve various symptoms such as obstipation, melancholia and nervousness. Additionally, certain herbs were proposed to be able to predict the weather and induce the vision of elves. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether herbs could have medical properties as claimed. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial with three arms was conducted: 1) Gin with St. John's wort, 2) Gin with angelica and 3) Gin with sweet woodruff. Participants were 21 anesthesia registrars. T

Hypericin, a medicinal compound from St. John's Wort, inhibits genotoxicity induced by mutagenic agents in V79 cells.

This study evaluated the cytotoxic, genotoxic, and the modulatory effects on DNA damage of hypericin in Chinese hamster lung fibroblasts (V79 cells). The hypericin is a natural polycyclic quinone, mainly extracted from St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum L.). Along with hyperforin, the hypericins are responsible for the antidepressant activity of St. John's Wort. Cytotoxicity was assessed by the XTT colorimetric assay and the nuclear division index (NDI). The genotoxic activity was studied by the micronucleus test at concentrations of 30, 60, 120, and 240 μg/mL. Mutagenic agents, methyl meth

Inhibitory effects of St. John's Wort on inflammation: ignored potential of a popular herb.

St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum L., family Hypericaceae) is a flowering herb, which has been used traditionally for decades in Europe and other parts of the world for the treatment of depressive mood disorders. A number of clinical trials support its application in the treatment of depressive mood symptoms. Although not commonly known for this use, St John's wort is also reputed for its usefulness in inflammatory conditions such as sciatica and fibromyalgia. This article discusses evidence from in vitro and in vivo studies supporting a possible use of St. John's wort as an anti-inflammat

Prenyllongnols A-D, New Prenylated Acylphloroglucinols that Fight Concanavalin A-Induced Autoimmune Hepatitis.

Autoimmune hepatitis is a serious hepatic disorder with unknown nosogenesis, and natural products have been deemed to be one of the most significant sources of new drugs against this disease. Prenyllongnols A-D (1-4), four undescribed prenylated acylphloroglucinols, were isolated from Hypericum longistylum. Compounds 1-4 exhibited remarkable immunosuppressive activities in murine splenocyte proliferation under the induction of concanavalin A (Con A), and IC50 values ranged from 2.98 ± 0.21 to 6.34 ± 0.72 μM. Furthermore, in a Con A-challenged autoimmune hepatitis mouse model, the mice in the g
