Complementary Feeding Practices in a Cohort of Italian Late Preterm Infants.

Limited data are available on complementary feeding in preterm infants, who show increased nutritional needs and are at risk of altered postnatal growth. The aim of this study was to investigate the timing and content of complementary feeding in a cohort of late preterm infants. We conducted a prospective, observational study, including mothers who had given birth to infants admitted to level I or II of care with a gestational age between 34 and 36 weeks. Mothers were contacted at 3, 6 and 12 months after delivery by phone calls and were asked about their infant's mode of feeding and the timin

Early influences on child satiety-responsiveness: the role of weaning style.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition during infancy may have a long-term impact upon weight gain and eating style. How infants are introduced to solid foods may be important. Traditionally, infants are introduced to solid foods via spoon-feeding of purees. However, baby-led weaning advocates allowing infants to self-feed foods in their whole form. Advocates suggest this may promote healthy eating styles, but evidence is sparse. The aim of the current study was to compare child eating behaviour at 18-24 months between infants weaned using a traditional weaning approach and those weaned using a baby-led weanin

Infant botulism: new guise for an old disease.

While classic botulism is usually due to preformed toxin in improperly prepared food, the newly recognized infant syndrome occurs when spores or vegetative cells germinate in the gut of the very young and elaborate toxin there. The resulting illness may range from inapparent to fulminant, sometimes causing respiratory arrest and death. Infant botulism may also account for at least some cases of sudden infant death syndrome.

Dietary patterns in infancy are associated with child diet and weight outcomes at 6 years.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether patterns of dietary exposures at 9 months are associated with child diet and weight at 6 years. METHODS: Data for this study were from the Infant Feeding Practices Study II and Year 6 Follow-Up Studies. All data were self-reported monthly. Results of a previous latent class analysis revealed five dietary patterns varying in milk and solid food intake. These five infant dietary patterns were used in the current study to predict child diet and weight outcomes at 6 years, while controlling for confounding variables. RESULTS: Infants with dietary patterns higher in f

Immediate food hypersensitivity reactions on the first known exposure to the food.

We report 8 infants with immediate hypersensitivity reactions to foods (milk, egg, or peanut), occurring at the first-known exposure. Each developed symptoms within the first hour, but these generally settled within 2 hours. Sensitisation to the food concerned was demonstrated by positive immediate allergen skin prick tests in every case. Symptoms experienced included irritability, erythematous rash, urticaria, angio-oedema, vomiting, rhinorrhoea, and cough. Five infants were being followed prospectively and 4 were clinically tolerant of the food by age 16 months. The most likely route of sens

The Clock Is Ticking: Everything We Have Learned About Food Allergy Prevention in the Last Decade.

This article covers common risk factors for the development of food allergy (FA), and the current evidence-base for each. Non-modifiable risk factors contribute to FA development, including genetics, gender, and mode of delivery. The article explores the current research on maternal diet and nutrition during pregnancy and lactation, specifically exploring supplementation with vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, and prebiotics/probiotics. Infant factors for development of FA, including emollient use and breastfeeding, are also reviewed. The article concludes with a discussion on early introduction

Impact of the 2022 Infant Formula Shortage on Self-Reported Rates of Anxiety and Depression: Evidence from the Household Pulse Survey.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of the 2022 infant formula shortage on self-reported anxiety and depression. BACKGROUND: The US national infant formula shortage of 2022 originated from supply chain disruptions triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the shortage was further compounded by a recall of tainted formula products. METHODS: We used survey-weighted data from the Household Pulse Survey (HPS) to measure self-reported anxiety and depression among individuals with formula-fed infants less than 1 year of age. We evaluated the association between 2 formula disruption variables (being impa

Glutamate: Safe and Adequate Intake Levels for Infants-Should Breast Milk Be Taken Off the Market?

Toxicological risk assessment of food ingredients has traditionally relied on identifying a no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) or benchmark dose (BMD), followed by the application of default uncertainty factors (UFs) to derive health-based guidance values (HBGVs) such as the acceptable daily intake (ADI). While effective for conventional food additives, this approach may be inappropriate for nutrients and intrinsic food components with established physiological functions. This paper critically explores these limitations using free glutamate as a central example, alongside additional case

Associations of infant feeding practices and picky eating behaviors of preschool children.

Picky eating behaviors are prevalent during childhood and are often linked to nutritional problems. However, information on the determinants of picky eating behaviors during infancy, when food acceptance patterns develop, is scarce. This study was conducted to evaluate the impact of infant feeding practices on the development of picky eating behaviors during preschool years. Baseline survey data from the Synergistic Theory and Research on Obesity and Nutrition Group Kids (STRONG Kids) program were used for this retrospective data analysis. Primary caregiver-child dyads were recruited from chil

Associations of gestational and early-life exposure to toxic metals and fluoride with a diagnosis of food allergy or atopic eczema at 1 year of age.

Studies have indicated that early-life exposure to toxic metals and fluoride affects the immune system, but evidence regarding their role in allergic disease development is scarce. We aimed to evaluate the relations of exposure to such compounds in 482 pregnant women and their infants (4 months of age) with food allergy and atopic eczema diagnosed by a paediatric allergologist at 1 year of age within the Swedish birth-cohort NICE (Nutritional impact on Immunological maturation during Childhood in relation to the Environment). Appropriate age range for introduction of complementary feeding into an infant's diet.

Following a request from the European Commission, the Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) revised its 2009 Opinion on the appropriate age for introduction of complementary feeding of infants. This age has been evaluated considering the effects on health outcomes, nutritional aspects and infant development, and depends on the individual's characteristics and development. As long as foods have an age-appropriate texture, are nutritionally appropriate and prepared following good hygiene practices, there is no convincing evidence that at any age investigated in the included st

[Infant botulism and sudden infant death syndrome].

Infant botulism represents a distinct entity of botulism. Ingestion of the ubiquitously present spores of Clostridium botulinum leads to germination of the organism and neurotoxin production in the infant intestine. Symptoms typically develop gradually in contrast to classical food botulism in which an acute onset of symptoms shortly after the ingestion of preformed toxin in a food is characteristic. Microbiologically, the diagnosis is established by identification of Clostridium botulinum organism and toxin in stool specimen. However, positive results in these tests provide only indirect evid

Iron nutrition in the breast-fed infant.

Breast-fed infants were compared with infants fed a prepared formula not fortified with iron during the first nine months of life. Despite efforts to provide equal iron intakes from cereal and other foods, the breast-fed infants ate less iron-containing foods than the formula-fed infants. The incidence of mild anemia and biochemical iron deficiency was the same in both groups. The breast-fed infants had a significantly lower total iron binding capacity. Breast-fed infants appear to utilize iron more efficiently than formula-fed infants.

PrEggNut Study: protocol for a randomised controlled trial investigating the effect of a maternal diet rich in eggs and peanuts from <23 weeks' gestation during pregnancy to 4 months' lactation on infant IgE-mediated egg and peanut allergy outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical studies supported by immunological data indicate early life intervention strategies to be promising in reducing the growing global burden of food allergies. The events that predispose to food allergy, including the induction of allergen-specific immune responses, appear to be initiated early in development. Early exposure to food allergens in utero and via breast milk is likely to be important in initiating oral tolerance. We aim to determine the effectiveness of higher maternal food allergen consumption during pregnancy and lactation on infant food allergy outcomes. ME

Dog ownership at three months of age is associated with protection against food allergy.

BACKGROUND: The prevention of food allergy is a key priority for reducing the burden of allergic disease. Environmental exposures modulate the risk of developing food allergy and some of this may be mediated by the infants' developing microbiome. However, the role of potentially protective environmental exposures, such as pet ownership, is largely uninvestigated with respect to food allergy. METHODS: We performed a secondary cohort analysis in the Enquiring About Tolerance (EAT) study, which enrolled 1303 three-month infants onto a randomized trial to prevent food allergy. A survey elicited d
