Pandemic response gaps: Infection prevention and control lessons learned during coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreaks in skilled nursing facilities in Detroit, Michigan.

BACKGROUND: Hospitalizations among skilled nursing facility (SNF) residents in Detroit increased in mid-March 2020 due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Outbreak response teams were deployed from local healthcare systems, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Detroit Health Department (DHD) to understand the infection prevention and control (IPC) gaps in SNFs that may have accelerated the outbreak. METHODS: We conducted 2 point-prevalence surveys (PPS-1 and PPS-2) at 13 Detroit SNFs from April 8 to May 8, 2020. The DHD and partners conducted facility

COVID-19 and its impact in the dental setting: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: The scoping review examined the evidence related to infection control and transmission measures of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in a dental setting during this pandemic. Dental practitioners are normally guided in practice by set ethical principles, thus the researchers wanted to determine how these rules are managed during this pandemic. METHODS: A protocol specific for the objectives of this study was developed according to the criteria for a scoping review. Relevant databases (Pubmed, Scopus, Elsevier, Science Direct, Wiley), including online access to health/ dental organizations (W

Q fever expertise among human and veterinary health professionals in Germany - A stakeholder analysis of knowledge gaps.

Q fever is a zoonosis caused by Coxiella burnetii. In Germany, the common sources of human infections include small ruminants that excrete the pathogen. Q fever in humans can be asymptomatic or nonspecific. However, severe disease progression is also possible, which can lead to death. Q fever in small ruminants is usually asymptomatic, although reproductive disorders may occur. To protect humans from Q fever, it is important that human and veterinary health professionals (practitioners/health authority employees) have comprehensive knowledge of the diagnosis, control and prevention of Q fever,

How to perform ultrasound-guided cannulation in adults.

Peripheral intravenous (IV) cannula insertion is one of the most common procedures performed in hospital patients. Ultrasound-guided cannulation is increasingly used by nurses and other healthcare practitioners to ensure successful cannulation, particularly in patients with difficult intravenous access (DIVA). This article provides nurses with foundational knowledge of ultrasound-guided cannulation before they undertake formal training in the procedure and achieve the required competencies to undertake it independently. • Evidence suggests that nurses who use ultrasound-guided cannulation achi

Serological survey for anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in sheep of northeastern Algeria.

Although T. gondii is of considerable both public and veterinary importance worldwide, studies on its existence in sheep in Algeria, either through serology and or parasitology is scarce. To this end, a cross-sectional study was carried out in Tébessa, an Algerian eastern province, to, firstly, investigate the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in sheep and, secondly, determine the potential risk factors that may be associated with seropositivity. A total of 376 serum samples from 39 flocks, collected between September 2015 and October 2017, were tested for anti-T.gondii antibodies via the

Male Infertility and Dental Health Status: A Systematic Review.

A limited number of studies have reported an association between male factor infertility (MFI) and dental health status (DHS). The aim of the present study was to assess the association between DHS and MFI through a systematic review of indexed literature. To address the focused question-"Is there a relationship between DHS and MFI?"-indexed databases were searched up to March 2016 using various key words "infertility," "periodontal disease," "periodontitis," "dental infection," "caries," and "odontogenic infection." Early screening for Chlamydia trachomatis in young women for primary prevention of pelvic inflammatory disease (i-Predict): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Genital infection with Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection, especially among young women. Mostly asymptomatic, it can lead, if untreated, to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), tubal factor infertility and ectopic pregnancy. Recent data suggest that Ct infections are not controlled in France and in Europe. The effectiveness of a systematic strategy for Ct screening in under-25 women remains controversial. The main objective of the i-Predict trial (Prevention of Diseases Induced by Chlamydia trachomatis) is to determine whether early

Glycaemic Control in Cardiac Surgery Patients: a Double-Edged Sword.

Glycaemic management is of paramount importance in the cardiac surgery setting. A growing body of evidence confirms a J-shaped relationship between blood glucose (BG) level and perioperative morbidity and mortality. On one hand, acute hypoglycaemia causes irreversible cerebral damage. On the other hand, hyperglycaemia increases the risk of infections, acute kidney injury, atrial fibrillation, low cardiac output syndrome, cerebrovascular accidents and cognitive impairment. Also, high BG variability, even within the therapeutic window, may deteriorate the outcome. Therefore, moderate perioperati

Risk factors for sexually transmitted disease amongst men in Harare, Zimbabwe.

A cross sectional survey was carried out among adult males attending a municipal polyclinic and two private practitioner surgeries in a Harare high density suburb, in order to identify risk factors for Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD). One hundred and twenty subjects participated, of whom 83 were cases (those with STD in the past six months) and 37 were controls (those with no STD). No association of STD was found with marital status, place of residence of wife, age, level of education or employment. STD was strongly associated with alcohol consumption (Odds Ratio = 7,1 [95 pc CI: 2,8-18,7])

Adolescent sexually transmitted diseases: new recommendations for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are a major health problem among adolescents. In 2000, adolescent females 15 to 19 years old had the highest reported rates of chlamydia and gonorrhea. Adolescent biologic, cognitive, social, and behavioral developmental circumstances contribute to the high rate of adolescent STDs. New sensitive and noninvasive STD tests greatly improve our ability to diagnose asymptomatic infections. In May 2002, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published revised guidelines for the treatment of STDs. The CDC's is based on evidence from published literat

Are emojis ready to promote the WHO 5 moments for hand hygiene in healthcare?

BACKGROUND: Hand hygiene is universally recognized as a cornerstone measure for the prevention of healthcare-associated infections. Although the WHO "My five Moments for hand hygiene" poster has been used for more than a decade to delineate hand hygiene indications and promote action, adherence levels among healthcare workers are still notoriously low and disquieting. To compensate for the lack of effective hand hygiene communication, we aimed to evaluate emojis as possible surrogates for the non-verbal aspects of hand hygiene behaviour. METHODS: Following a thorough review of the Unicode ver
