Imaging Patterns of Rhino-Orbital-Cerebral Mucormycosis in Immunocompromised Patients : When to Suspect Complicated Mucormycosis.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to describe radiological imaging findings of a complicated sinusitis, which should raise the suspicion of rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis as being the underlying cause. METHODS: In this retrospective analysis, we describe the cases and imaging findings of 8 patients with proven mucormycosis. These patients presented mostly with new facial or orbital swelling and were referred for imaging to our institution. Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography images were classified as abnormal or normal with respect to orbital, paranasal and cerebral signa

[Ameloblastoma of the pterygomaxillary fossa. Apropos of a case and review of the literature].

Our propose is to present a case of peripheral ameloblastoma revealed by a glue-ear. This lesion is rare: thirty-one peripheral ameloblastoma have been reported whereas this case seems to be the first case described in the infratemporal fossa. Microscopic examination is necessary for the diagnosis. The resection was realized through the soft palate.

Removal of a Maxillary Third Molar Displaced into Pterygopalatine Fossa via Intraoral Approach.

The removal of impacted maxillary third molars is one of the most common procedures performed in oral and maxillofacial surgery units with low rates of complications and morbidity. A few cases of accidental displacement of third molars into adjacent anatomical spaces, such as the infratemporal fossa, the pterygomandibular space, the maxillary sinus, buccal space, or the lateral pharyngeal space, during surgical interventions have been reported. In this paper, a case of a maxillary third molar accidentally displaced into the pterygopalatine fossa is presented, and the removal of the tooth via i

Primary jugular foramen fibrous dysplasia: surgically nuanced video of extradural infratemporal transjugular approach. Illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Fibrous dysplasia of the bone is a disease caused by a somatic GNAS mutation that affects craniofacial bones and can have a mass effect on different neurovascular structures. The authors present the first case of primary jugular foramen fibrous dysplasia with occlusion of the transverse and sigmoid sinuses. OBJECTIVE: A 33-year-old man presented with a history of dizziness and occasional dysphagia over the past year. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a uniform enhanced mass in the left jugular foramen, with complete blockage of the adjacent transverse and sigmoid sinuses. The comp

Denker operation is an effective surgical approach in managing juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

This article presents our experience with the various surgical approaches for angiofibroma and establishes the Denker procedure as an effective approach for removal of the tumor. The medical records of 29 patients treated between the years 1981 and 2001 were examined. The clinical extent of the tumor, the surgical approach, complications, and recurrences were evaluated. The surgical approaches used before 1992 consisted of the transnasal, transpalatal, and combined transnasal-transpalatal ones. Although no major recurrence or major morbidity was observed, late complications occurred, such as p

Sinonasal Burkitt Lymphoma in a 2-Year-Old Child: An Uncommon Case Report.

Burkitt Lymphoma (BL) is a highly aggressive B-type non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It rarely develops at the level of the sinonasal cavities, especially in young children. We present the case of a 2-year-old boy who presented with a 2-month history of nasal obstruction, snoring, and epistaxis followed by a recent dyspnea. Examination revealed a protruding tissue mass in the left nasal cavity. Computed tomography scan showed a homogenous soft-tissue mass in the left nasal cavity extending toward the ipsilateral orbit, infratemporal fossa, nasopharynx, as well as the ethmoid and maxillary sinuses. Magnet

Oropharyngeal teratomas in newborns: management and outcome.

OBJECTIVES: Congenital teratomas of the oropharyngeal cavity are extremely rare and are associated with a high neonatal mortality rate due to severe airway obstruction. Management has been improved with progress in antenatal diagnosis. The authors describe this progress in the light of a series of 4 cases and a review of the literature. METHODS: The medical charts of four neonates treated in the department since 1995 were reviewed. The following criteria were studied: age at diagnosis, clinical and radiological features of the tumour, management at birth and outcome. RESULTS: All four cases

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma with Intracranial Extension.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ADCC) is a malignant tumor of salivary gland origin. ADCC of sinonasal tract is rare. We present a rare and unresectable case of sinonasal ADCC with intracranial extension in an 83-year-old man with the chief complaint of nasal congestion. Invasion to the maxillary sinus, nasopharynx, anterior cranial fossa, sella turcica and extension to cavernous sinus, dura mater and infratemporal fossa were evident on MRI and CT scan. The patient was treated only by palliative radiotherapy, but unfortunately, he died 3 months after the initial diagnosis.

Sphenoid Temporal Meningioma With Granular Cell Features and Extracranial Infratemporal Extension.

Meningiomas usually arise from arachnoid cap cells and present as intracranial, dural-based lesions. Extracranial extension into the temporalis muscle, infratemporal fossa, orbit, and skull base foramina is uncommon and can mimic primary soft-tissue or peripheral nerve sheath tumors. We report a 54-year-old female who presented with a slowly progressive right-sided facial and temporal swelling over two years, associated with intermittent pain and mild proptosis but no focal neurological deficit. Computed tomography demonstrated a small extra-axial minimally enhancing right anterior temporal le

The Birmingham mummy: the first torticollis in history.

The Birmingham Mummy is of a warrior, 25-35 years of age, from the Graeco-Roman period. He was struck from the front by an arrow, which penetrated the soft tissues of the neck to some depth and lodged in the right infratemporal fossa. It is suggested that the wound became infected and that muscle spasm induced the torticollis which was not fully corrected on mummification.

Parotid lipoblastoma in a child: Rare presentation as huge infratemporal mass with cervical extension.

Lipoblastomas arising within the parotid gland and extending into the infratemporal fossa are very rare. They are common in children <3 years of age. Access to the tumour requires careful planning and interpretation of imaging studies. Lipoblastomas tend to recur. Meticulous dissection of the tumour is needed to prevent recurrence. By adopting the appropriate approach, complete removal is possible with minimal morbidity.

Surgical Techniques and Functional Reconstruction for Complex Tenosynovial Giant Cell Tumor of Temporal Bone and Middle Skull Base.

Objectives: Temporal tenosynovial giant cell tumors (TGCTs) are often large and have invaded the middle skull base. It is difficult to protect the important neurovascular structures around the tumor and perform functional reconstruction on the basis of complete tumor resection. This study aimed at analyzing the surgical techniques and functional reconstruction during the operation of complex TGCT of temporal bone and middle skull base. Methods: Five patients with pathologically confirmed TGCT of different complex types in the temporal bone and middle skull base were treated in our hospital fro

Hemimasticatory spasm in hemifacial atrophy: diagnostic and therapeutic aspects in two patients.

We report two cases of hemimasticatory spasm in association with progressive hemifacial atrophy. On the basis of neurophysiological and magnetic resonance imaging assessments, a peripheral irritation of the trigeminal nerve--probably due to entrapment of the motor branches in the infratemporal fossa--is suggested as the cause of the involuntary movement. Local injections of botulinum toxin type A into the masticatory muscles proved to be a successful treatment in both patients.
