Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus outbreak in a pre- and post-cardiothoracic transplant population: Impact of discontinuing multidrug-resistant organism surveillance during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Many institutions suspended surveillance and contact precautions for multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) at the outset of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic due to a lack of resources. Once our institution reinstated surveillance in September 2020, a vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) faecium outbreak was detected in the cardiothoracic transplant units, a population in which we had not previously detected outbreaks. METHODS: An outbreak investigation was conducted using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis for strain typing and electronic medical record review t

Lymphoedema in Head and Neck Cancer Survivors: Healthcare Professionals' Perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Improvements in head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment have increased survival rates, resulting in survivors living with side effects, such as head and neck lymphoedema (HNL). We aimed to document healthcare professionals' perceptions of HNL, approaches to managing HNL, and integration of HNL management into routine practice in Australia and New Zealand. METHODS: We conducted an online, 51-item survey between February and October 2024. The survey comprised two main sections: (i) all healthcare professionals working with HNC and HNL; and (ii) only HNL therapists. RESULTS: Particip

Systematic dissemination of study findings from local to national stakeholders: a case of a social network-based study on HIV self-testing and linkage among fishermen in Kenya.

Disseminating research findings to potential beneficiaries such as study participants, community members, and stakeholders is a critical component of participatory research. While there is general agreement that dissemination is critical, documented examples of comprehensive dissemination activities are few in the literature. We present a concrete example of a multi-level stakeholder dissemination process from a successful HIV self-testing and linkage to treatment and prevention intervention, describe the dissemination framework used to guide activities, document the process required to carry

Consensus expert recommendations for the diagnosis and management of autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease: report of an international conference.

Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD; MIM 263200) is a severe, typically early onset form of cystic disease that primarily involves the kidneys and biliary tract. Phenotypic expression and age at presentation can be quite variable. The incidence of ARPKD is 1 in 20,000 live births, and its pleotropic manifestations are potentially life-threatening. Optimal care requires proper surveillance to limit morbidity and mortality, knowledgeable approaches to diagnosis and treatment, and informed strategies to optimize quality of life. Clinical management therefore is ideally directed b

Diagnostic and management challenges of a case of N-acetylglutamate synthase deficiency in a resource-limited healthcare setting in Tanzania: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Inborn errors of metabolism represent a significant cause of childhood morbidity and mortality. These conditions are frequently missed in low-resource settings due to their anticipated rarity and similarity of symptoms to conditions such as sepsis. We present a case of a neonate with N-acetylglutamate synthase deficiency whose diagnosis and management at our facility were complicated by limited healthcare resources. CASE REPORT: A three-day-old male of South Asian origin born to consanguineous parents presented with lethargy, hypothermia and respiratory distress. He was initially

Treating trauma more effectively: A review of psychosocial programming.

IMPORTANCE: Traumatic events are the leading cause of life-altering disability in adults of working age. The management of patients with traumatic injury has substantially improved due to development of sophisticated trauma centers increasing survival after injury. Unlike the adoption of the trauma system framework, the same has not occurred with specialized trauma recovery services to include mental and social health needs. This literature review will discuss unique issues facing trauma survivors, some current recovery programs available, outcomes and benefits of these programs, and barriers
