The use of clozapine among individuals with intellectual disability: a review.

Clozapine has been approved in the United States since 1990 for refractory or treatment resistant schizophrenia in the general population. However, as with many other antipsychotic medications, it is being prescribed for reasons other than those indicated. Among individuals with intellectual disabilities, clozapine is increasingly being prescribed to treat behavioral problems, although the empirical evidence for such a practice is lacking. This review was undertaken as an attempt to summarize the available studies regarding the use of clozapine for behavioral purposes among individuals with in

Social services utilization by adults with intellectual disabilities and their families.

In this study, we used Andersen's Behavioral Model with the family as a unit of analysis to examine the patterns of awareness and utilization of social services by families with at least one adult with intellectual disabilities. Face-to-face interview questionnaires were conducted with primary family caregivers in Hsinchu City, Taiwan in 2004. Data were collected on adults' and caregivers' predisposing, enabling, and need variables as well as awareness and utilization of formal social services. A total of 792 interviews were completed, making a response rate of 94.2%. Multivariate logistic reg

Prevalence of fractures in women with intellectual disabilities: a chart review.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have demonstrated high rates of osteoporosis and fractures in women with intellectual disabilities (IDs). All of the studies use either institutionalized women or women in the community recruited at adult day-care centres or specialty clinics. We examined the prevalence of fractures in women with IDs who attend a primary care clinic, and assessed osteoporosis-prevention/intervention activities. METHODS: This was a chart review study. Charts were identified of women with an ICD-9 diagnosis code for ID, Down syndrome or developmental disabilities. All charts reviewe

Expressed emotion in families of children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Expressed emotion (EE) is a measure of the affective relationship between two people characterized by criticism, hostility, and emotionally over-involved attitudes. Outside of the field of intellectual disabilities, there has been considerable interest in EE as an environmental marker that explains variance in the severity and/or course of a number of psychiatric disorders. Researchers have also studied EE in parents and found strong associations with children's behavior problems. In this review, we focus on the data from 11 published studies of EE in families of children and adults with intel

Predictors of asphyxiation risk in adults with intellectual disabilities and dysphagia.

BACKGROUND: Adults with learning disabilities referred for assessment of their eating and drinking are frequently reported to cough and choke when eating and drinking. The research literature investigating dysphagia has often overlooked asphyxiation risk, highlighting coughing and choking as indicators of aspiration only. This is a notable oversight due to the prevalence of asphyxia as a cause of mortality in this population. AIM: This study aims to identify the physiological and environmental factors that predict asphyxiation risk in adults with intellectual disabilities and dysphagia. METH

Life events and psychiatric symptoms in adults with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has indicated that children and adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) may respond to traumatic and other life events in a similar way to the general population. However, few studies have charted the extent of exposure to recent life events in samples of adults with ID and the association of such exposure with general psychiatric problems. METHODS: Adults with ID (n = 1155) in community and residential services in a county district in North-east England were assessed using the Psychiatric Assessment for Adults with Developmental Disabilities Checklist (PAS-AD

Prevalence and incidence of health problems in people with intellectual disability.

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and incidence of the most frequent chronic health problems in relation to age in people with intellectual disabilities living in residential facilities in the Netherlands. A prospective cohort study was done with four data collections, each with an interval of one year. Data were collected by means of questionnaires which were completed by each person's physician. Striking results included the reported high prevalence and incidence of visual and hearing impairment, which was even more pronounced in people with Down's syndrome than in

[Are we pushing the disabled intellectually into a ghetto? (AUTHOR'S TRANSL)].

Disabled people not only encounter barriers in their physical environment (in the form of steps which social rehabilitation is making efforts to level, remove or overcome through ramps) but also in the intellectual and emotional fields (in the life and thinking habits of our society, in expressions, song texts, etc.) i.e. basic expressions which seem to be applicable to the lives of the non-disabled but which prevent the disabled's access to life in the community. The examples given are: "What you are depends on what you have", "the world is beautiful", "everything will turn out all right". Th

Reliability and validity of the Sargent jump in people with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Assessing muscular strength in people with intellectual disabilities requires simple and reliable field tests. This study analysed the reliability and validity of the vertical jump (VJ) across disability levels. METHOD: Sixty-three participants with intellectual disabilities completed the VJ, standing long jump (SLJ), and countermovement jump (CMJ) twice in separate sessions. Relative and absolute reliability were assessed using the ICC and SEM/MDC, respectively. Validity was examined using Pearson's correlations. RESULTS: The VJ showed good relative reliability (ICC = 0.89) but

Spatial correlates of wayfinding abilities in people with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has found that people with intellectual disabilities performed wayfinding tasks at or below their intellectual level. This research aims to examine what small-scale spatial abilities predict wayfinding in people with intellectual disabilities. METHOD: Sixty-one participants with intellectual disabilities aged 12-25 years completed a wayfinding task and eight small-scale spatial ability tasks, the latter of which were based on the double-dimension theoretical framework. RESULTS: Extrinsic-dynamic spatial abilities predict wayfinding route knowledge. Intrinsic-Dyn

Examining Stress in Parents of Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Many parents of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) experience high levels of stress. Such stress can negatively impact parents (e.g., create exhaustion, worsen physical and mental health) and their children with IDD (e.g., reduce their quality of care). By identifying specific stressors and their correlates, targeted interventions can be designed to mitigate stress and improve outcomes for families of adults with IDD. In this study, 518 parents of adult children with IDD responded to a national survey about their stress. Top stressors included future planning an

Exploring Media Portrayals of Individuals With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Considering past evidence highlighting the role of media portrayal in shaping community attitudes towards people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), we analyzed depictions of IDD in seven television shows and three movies. Characters with IDD were coded based on categories representing (a) their attributes (demographic, disability-related, and personality), (b) the salience of IDD and character with IDD, (c) treatment by other characters, and (d) quality of life. The majority of the characters were White and male, and persons with IDD played characters with visible disabili

To vaccinate or not: hepatitis a seroprevalence in institutionalized patients with intellectual disability.

AIM: Our goal was to assess the need for vaccination and preventive measures in this vulnerable population. BACKGROUND: HAV is the most common form of acute viral hepatitis, transmitted primarily via fecal-oral route. Therefore, poor hygiene and close contact among institutionalized people are associated with higher HAV infection prevalence. We sought to determine the seroprevalence of anti-HAV antibodies among institutionalized individuals with intellectual impairments in light of Iran's falling trend in HAV antibody prevalence. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated the serop
