INTRODUCTION: Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) is a mainstay in the management of neurogenic bladder.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of CIC on urinary tract infection and upper renal tract function in pediatric patients with neurogenic bladder, and the influence of duration of CIC on these variables.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study was performed in 67 pediatric patients with neurogenic bladder who started CIC between 2014 and 2019 at our institution. The febrile urinary tract infection (fUTI) rate, renal pelvis diameter (measured by antero-posterior renal pelvis diameter, APPD),

INTRODUCTION: We investigated the long-term usage pattern and satisfaction of continent catheterizable channels (CCCs).
METHODS: From 2005 to 2018, CCCs, including Mitrofanoff and antegrade continent enema (ACE) channels, were made in 67 patients (Mitrofanoff in 21 patients, ACE channels in 43 patients, and both in three patients) in our institution. An online survey was conducted for these patients in order to assess usage pattern, continent status, difficulty in usage, and patient satisfaction.
RESULTS: Sixteen (66.7%) out of 24 patients with the Mitrofanoff channel and 39 (84.7%) out of 4

A 19-year-old man had been aware of dysuria and urinary incontinence since childhood but did not seek medical attention. He was diagnosed with acute pyelonephritis due to lower urinary tract dysfunction associated with spina bifida occulta and tethered cord syndrome (TCS) due to spinal cord lipoma. After placement of a urethral catheter and antibacterial chemotherapy, the patient was cured of acute pyelonephritis. He was treated with solifenacin and started clean self-intermittent catheterization (CIC). Shortly after the start of CIC, the acute pyelonephritis flared up again, and he was manage

Since December 1985, we have treated 65 patients with urinary stress incontinence due to intrinsic sphincter dysfunction with the vaginal wall sling procedure. Of the 54 patients who were available for follow-up, intrinsic sphincter dysfunction was related to multiple prior bladder neck suspension procedures in 48 patients. In the remaining 6 patients, 2 had pelvic trauma, 2 had neurogenic urethral dysfunction, 1 had urethral diverticulectomy, and 1 had pelvic radiation. The success rate of the vaginal wall sling procedure for correcting stress incontinence was 94.4 percent at a mean follow-up

AIMS: To confirm the improved performance of the micro-hole zone catheter (MHZC) compared to a conventional eyelet catheter (CEC) in male users of clean intermittent catheterizations (CICs).
METHODS: Male self-catheterizing subjects, who used hydrophilic sleeved soft/flexible CIC as the only bladder emptying method, were enrolled into a multi-center, randomized, cross-over study performed across six European sites. Subjects tested the MHZC, featuring a drainage zone with 120 micro-holes and a CEC with two eyelets. The study consisted of four study visits (V0-V3), during which endpoints relate

A 44-year-old man was carried to the hospital in an ambulance because of dyspnea, paralysis and dysuria after signs of the flu. Acute encephalomyelitis was diagnosed by examination of magnetic resonance imaging. Antimicrobial treatment and respirator management was carried out with indwelling of urethral catheter for urinary retention. After improvement of encephalitis, the urethral catheter was removed. However, he still needed medical care because of persistent lower urinary tract symptoms. He complained of urge incontinence and urination frequency. Decrease of functional bladder capacity wa

We report on a case of a pure urogenital sinus anomaly presented with bladder distention. A seven-day-old girl with an abdominal distension was referred to the Division of Urology, Hakodate Central Hospital, Hakodate, Japan. A common urogenital sinus without abnormalities in the labium, clitoris or anus was found. A computed tomography (CT) scan documented a distended bladder without hydrometrocolpos or hydroureteronephrosis. Cystography performed at 44 days revealed a large flaccid bladder without ureteral reflux. Urinary management by an indwelling urethral catheter was maintained until 3 mo

INTRODUCTION: Children with neurogenic bladder (NGB) often require a lifetime of clean intermittent catheterization (CIC), typically using uncoated catheters (UCs). Hydrophilic catheters (HCs) have lower friction than UCs with reported less damage to the urethra. The purpose of this study is to compare outcomes between these catheters.
METHODS: An investigator-initiated, prospective, randomized clinical trial was conducted to compare HCs versus UCs. Children aged 2-17 years with NGB on CIC were enrolled for 1 year. Block randomization was used. Dexterity scores were obtained in those who perf

PURPOSE: For patients with incomplete cervical cord injuries, appropriate urinary management based on an assessment of voiding and storage function of the bladder is necessary for a better prognosis, especially during the recovery phase. In our review of medical records of such patients, we identified factors related to recovery of bladder function and parameters for predicting prognosis.
METHODS: In this study, we included 234 patients with incomplete cervical cord injuries admitted to Kanagawa Rehabilitation Hospital. Their medical records were retrospectively reviewed for various parameter

Urinary retention following total hip and knee arthroplasty is a common problem frequently necessitating either prolonged urethral catheter drainage or intermittent catheterization. The direct relationship of urinary tract instrumentations, procedures, and infections to deep sepsis in total hip replacements is well documented. Pharmacologic therapy to stimulate voiding or augment bladder emptying is thus theoretically preferable to the use of catheterization. Prasozin hydrochloride, an alpha blocker, relaxes the smooth musculature of the posterior urethra and prostrate and has been used to tre

We describe 5 cases in which complete posterior urethral disruption associated with pelvic fracture was managed by primary endoscopic realignment 7 to 19 days after injury. Realignment was accomplished using a flexible endoscope through the suprapubic tract and a rigid or flexible cystoscope in the distal urethra. A guide wire was passed from the suprapubic tract through the disrupted membranous urethra and out the distal urethra. A Councill catheter was left indwelling for 5 to 10 weeks. After removal a program of intermittent self-catheterization was continued for 3 months. Excellent results

Treatment of urethral stricture is a complex reconstructive urology treatment. Previous surgery in the treatment of urethral stricture increases the risk of urinary incontinence. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the outcome of comparing two preservative or nonsurgical methods, clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) or hydraulic urethral dilatation (HUD). Forty-eight patients diagnosed with symptomatic urethral stricture were enrolled in the study. Patients were randomly divided into two groups: Nelaton-based dilatation and HUD treatment. Patients were assessed using patient-reported out

AIM: The aim of this study is to examine the functional outcomes of ona-botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) injection into the external urethral sphincter (EUS) for female patients with nonneurogenic nonrelaxing sphincter as the underlying cause of voiding dysfunction (VD).
METHOD: A retrospective analysis was performed for all the patients with the urodynamic findings of higher than expected maximum urethral closure pressure (MUCP) who received their first injection during the study period. All patients were evaluated with preoperative videourodynamic study and urethral pressure profilometry and recei

A prospective study was carried out on the efficacy and safety of clean intermittent catheterization (CIC). The series included 41 adults (15 females, 26 males), the mean follow-up time being 40 months. Most patients were suffering from neurogenic bladder disorders. All of them used a self-lubricating hydrophilic catheter. Thirty-one patients (76%) continued to undergo CIC, but 9 discontinued. Thirty patients (73%) experienced bacteriuria during the procedure. Three males had epididymitis. Contrary to many earlier reports, urinary tract infections seem to increase after CIC, raising the questi

We evaluated 50 men who suffered a total disruption of the posterior urethra in conjunction with a fractured pelvis. The urethral disruption was treated with immediate placement of a suprapubic cystostomy and delayed one-stage urethroplasty. Subsequently, 15 required at least one visual urethrotomy and three underwent one urethral dilatation. All 50 now have a patent urethra and 38 (76%) void normally and are continent. Five have an areflexic bladder secondary to the injury and intermittently catheterize themselves but are continent. Three patients have mild urge incontinence and three mild st

BACKGROUND: Managing neurogenic bladder patients with low detrusor leak pressures remains a major challenge in pediatric urology. Bladder augmentation combined with bladder neck resistance procedures is frequently indicated, although outcomes vary according to the technique used. We report early to midterm outcomes of an original bladder neck closure method-the Longitudinal Inside-Out (LIO) technique-used at our center since 2008.
METHODS: A retrospective review of the bladder reconstruction database at NUPEP/CACAU Pediatric Urology Center (UNIFESP) was performed. All surgeries were conducted
