Hearing-Functioning Problems Across High-Burden Adult Health Conditions in Africa.

Hearing-functioning problems contribute substantially to disability and rehabilitation needs globally; however, evidence describing the range and interconnected nature of these problems across African populations remains fragmented. This study aimed to describe hearing-functioning problems associated with high-burden adult health conditions across African populations using data from the Rehab4All database. A secondary exploratory analysis was conducted using data extracted from a large Africa-wide scoping review of functioning problems associated with conditions contributing substantially to y

[Autism spectrum disorder: a functional approach to development].

INTRODUCTION: Children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibit diverse functioning and share challenges in social communication and repetitive behaviors. Diagnostic classifications do not fully capture their daily strengths and limitations, making functional assessments essential. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) highlights activities and participation as fundamental aspects to describe health conditions. TEA-CIFunciona, an ICF based tool, standardizes functional assessment and defines intervention goals for children with ASD in A

Influences of the built environment in physical activity participation in individuals with disabilities: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity remains a critical public health concern for individuals with disabilities, who often encounter environmental and structural barriers to participation. Although research on built environment characteristics and physical activity (PA) has expanded, evidence specific to individuals with disabilities remains fragmented and requires clearer conceptual integration. This systematic review synthesises evidence on built environment characteristics associated with PA participation among individuals with disabilities. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted across

Content validity of patient-reported outcome measures for patients with chronic pain: considering the patient's perspective.

Understanding chronic pain and disability requires a consideration of the lived experience of the patient. There is limited evaluation of the content validity of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in chronic pain using a comprehensive biopsychosocial view of the patient's experience. To address this gap, this study aimed to evaluate the content validity of PROMs for patients with chronic pain. A literature review was performed to identify PROMs for patients with chronic pain. Concepts from PROMs were linked to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF)

Workers with a chronic disease and work disability. Problems and solutions.

The prevalence of chronic diseases in the age group 18-65 years is high. Cardiometabolic conditions and musculoskeletal diseases are the most frequent chronic diseases. Depending on disease and comorbidity, the employment rates are considerably lower than for healthy individuals. Chronically ill workers may have problems in meeting job demands, they may experience physical, cognitive or sensory limitations, have fatigue or pain complaints or other disease symptoms. Psychological distress, depressive feelings, feelings of shame or guilt, lack of coping or communicative skills, and non-supportiv

Separating disability stigma from health stigma: implications for health and rehabilitation research and practice.

PURPOSE: Disability stigma is a key under-addressed driver of health inequalities among persons with disabilities, including barriers to accessing rehabilitation. Many studies conflate disability stigma and health stigma despite the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) distinguishing between the concepts of "disability" and a "health condition." This paper applies the ICF to identify the conceptual boundaries between disability stigma and health stigma. METHOD: This paper comprises a conceptual review of the disability and health stigma literature. The ICF

Levels of disability in the older population of England: Comparing binary and ordinal classifications.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies suggest the importance of distinguishing severity levels of disability. Nevertheless, there is not yet a consensus with regards to an optimal classification. OBJECTIVE: Our study seeks to advance the existing binary definitions towards categorical/ordinal manifestations of disability. METHODS: We define disability according to the WHO's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) using data collected at the baseline wave of the English Longitudinal Study of Aging, a longitudinal study of the non-institutionalized population, living in E

[Rethinking aging, autonomy and disability in France: A University-driven, territory-based, and prevention-oriented transformation of the health system - Position of the French Conference of Deans of Medical Faculties].

Population ageing, the increasing burden of chronic diseases, and the growing prevalence of disability are major challenges for the French health system. These trends expose the limitations of a model that remains largely organized around disease and dependency, with fragmented coordination between healthcare, social care, and community services. This fragmentation results in disrupted care pathways, delayed identification of functional decline, territorial inequalities, and an increasing burden on patients, caregivers, and health professionals. This position paper presents the vision of the F

Using graph machine learning to identify functioning in patients with low back pain in terms of ICF.

As a comprehensive perspective on functioning is useful in patient assessments, the WHO developed the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) to provide a standardized terminology and framework for describing and classifying human functioning. However, its complex structure poses a problem for implementation as part of clinical practice. The aim of this study was to test a graph machine learning engine, Headai Graphmind, to recognize ICF codes from electronic health records written in Finnish. A dataset of 93 patients aged 18 to 65 years with chronic low back p
