The clinical and pathologic features of 25 inflammatory pseudotumors of the small intestine are reported. These rare lesions, which clinically may simulate neoplasms, consist of localized, frequently polypoid masses composed of inflamed fibrous and granulation tissue. Inflammatory pseudotumors may produce intussusception and small-bowel obstruction. Some are found at laparotomy performed for other reasons. The diagnosis of inflammatory pseudotumor usually can not be made until the lesion is examined histogically. Their etiology remains unknown, but their relationship to intestinal ulceration i

Small intestine tumors are rare. The four main groups include adenocarcinomas, neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN), lymphomas, and mesenchymal tumors. The jejunum and ileum can only be examined endoscopically with device-assisted enteroscopy techniques (DAET), which are indicated only when specific clinical or imaging findings are present. The initial diagnosis of tumors of the small intestine is mostly made using computed tomography (CT). Video capsule endoscopy (VCE), computed tomography (CT) enterography, and magnetic resonance (MR) enterography are also time-consuming and costly modalities. Mod

Sinonasal intestinal-type adenocarcinoma is a rare neoplasm which can be diagnosed by pathologic report. Nasal obstruction, epistaxis, and rhinorrhea are common symptoms, but presenting with a benign-looking palpable mass is also possible. This is a report of our experience in diagnosing and treating a sinonasal intestinal-type low grade adenocarcinoma. A 63-year-old man initially presented with a rapidly growing palpable mass in the glabella region for 4 months. A malignancy of sinus origin was suspected on imaging studies. We performed further preoperative evaluations for cancer staging, and

Cystitis cystica and cystitis glandularis (CG) are relatively common appearances in the urinary bladder though CG may occasionally mimic a neoplasm. Microscopically, two types of CG are recognized, the usual type and intestinal type. This study was undertaken to study the morphology of CG and to highlight the differences in morphology between CG and adenocarcinoma. Eleven cases of CG were seen, of which 3 cases showed predominantly CG, usual type and eight cases showed CG of intestinal type. One case of primary adenocarcinoma was included in this study, where the adjacent bladder mucosa showed

BACKGROUND: Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare mucinous neoplasm with a relatively low incidence of 1 to 2 per million individuals. It is typically characterized by a type of gelatinous ascites named "jelly belly". Most cases of PMP occur in association with ruptured primary mucinous tumors of the appendix (90%). Periodically, PMP can originate from mucinous carcinomas at other sites, including the colorectum, gallbladder, and pancreas. However, unusual origin can occur, as noted in this case report.
CASE SUMMARY: A 52-year-old woman had an unusual derivation of PMP from intestinal duplic

Primary clear cell colorectal carcinoma (CCC) is a very rare entity accounting for only 35 cases reported in the Literature. CCC is neither classified as a distinct entity nor is it defined as a CRC variant because its ontogeny remains unclear. Most of the reported CCC were found in the distal colon in patients with a mean age of 56 years. Histologically, clear cell change is the main morphologic feature and may present in a "pure" form, composed exclusively of clear cells, or in a "composite" form, admixed with other morphologically different components. It is possible to distinguish two biol

Mature cystic teratoma (MCT) is the most common germ cell tumor of the ovary, comprising 20% of all ovarian neoplasms. Malignant transformation (MT) is an uncommon complication and occurs in approximately 1-3% of all MCTs. The most common histological type of MT is squamous cell carcinoma. Other rare transformations include - carcinoid tumors, melanoma, adenocarcinoma, and sarcoma. We present one such rare case of bilateral MCT with unilateral MT into mucinous adenocarcinoma of intestinal type.

Malignant neoplasms of the small bowel, especially from the jejunum, are among the rarest types of cancer. Given its location, a delayed diagnosis is frequent and sometimes only made in an emergency context. The authors present a case of intestinal obstruction, where ultrasonography was pivotal in establishing a diagnosis. Point-of-care ultrasonography seems to be particularly sensitive in assessing emergency patients with abdominal pain, allowing effective orientation and saving human and technical resources.

Carcinoid tumours are uncommon neuroendocrine neoplasms that may be found anywhere in the body but are most commonly seen in the gastro-intestinal and respiratory tracts. Metastasis to the skin occurs in a small proportion of these but primary cutaneous carcinoid tumours are exceedingly rare. There have been five previous cases of primary carcinoid tumours occurring in the skin. To our knowledge, this is the first report of metastasis from a primary cutaneous carcinoid tumour.

BACKGROUND: To clarify the pathological significance of two precursors (high-grade biliary intraepithelial neoplasm [BilIN] and intraductal papillary neoplasm of bile duct [IPNB]) in cholangiocarcinomas (CCAs).
METHODS: Ninety-one cases of CCA (47 distal CCAs [dCCAs], 31 perihilar CCAs [pCCAs] and 13 intrahepatic CCAs of large duct type [LD-iCCAs]) were examined for their association with precursors. Neoplastic intraepithelial lesions without underlying infiltrating carcinoma in the surrounding mucosa of CCAs were considered to reflect high-grade BilIN. High-grade BilIN and IPNB were subdivid

The medical records of seven cats with intestinal intussusception that were diagnosed by abdominal ultrasonography and exploratory laparotomy were reviewed. In transverse ultrasonographic sections the intussusception appeared as a target-like mass consisting of one, two or more hyperechoic and hypoechoic concentric rings surrounding a C-shaped, circular or non-specific shaped hyperechoic centre. Part of the intestine representing the inner intussusceptum, located close to the hyperechoic centre and surrounded by concentric rings, was also detected. In longitudinal sections the intussusception

BACKGROUND: Primary cutaneous peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PC-PTCLs) are classified into mycosis fungoides (MF) and other rare specific types; and those do not fit into any specific entities are designated as PTCL, not otherwise specified (NOS), an aggressive neoplasm. Monomorphic epitheliotropic intestinal T-cell lymphoma (MEITL) is an aggressive primary intestinal T-cell lymphoma with enteropathy in the non-neoplastic mucosa. We report a rare case of PC-PTCL-NOS with a late relapse solely in the ileum after complete remission. We discuss the importance of evaluating enteropathy, megakaryocyt

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are epithelial neoplasms with predominant neuroendocrine differentiation that arise in the gastrointestinal tract, unique to the site of origin, such as the pancreas and small intestine. Neuroendocrine breast carcinoma (NEBC) is a rare tumor. Diagnosing NEBC is challenging because there is no specific clinical presentation, as it is usually presented as a breast lump. Therefore, diagnosing NEBC before biopsy is difficult. Another challenge in diagnosing NEBC is to know whether it is primary or metastatic. We present a case of a 60-year-old woman found to have a

Computed tomography (CT) remains the optimal imaging modality for diagnosing tumors in the mesentery. Although primary neoplasms arising from the mesenchymal tissues of the mesentery are rare, the small bowel mesentery is a major avenue for the dissemination of tumor within the peritoneal cavity. Tumors spread to the mesentery by four major routes: (a) direct extension, commonly seen with carcinoid tumor of the small intestine as well as intraabdominal cancers such as pancreatic and colon cancer; (b) lymphatic dissemination of lymphoma and some epithelial malignancies; (c) hematogenic spread r

Mixed adenoneuroendocrine carcinomas (MANECs) are composite neoplasms with areas of adenocarcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma intermingled with neuroendocrine carcinoma or neuroendocrine tumor, each composing at least 30% of the neoplasm. MANECs are very infrequent overall, and they are more commonly diagnosed in the appendix, colon, and stomach. Biliary MANECs are particularly rare, and their histogenesis is debated because neuroendocrine cells are seldom identified in the normal biliary tract. They can show one of the 3 different architectural patterns described in Lewin's original classific

BACKGROUND: Papillary cystic neoplasm of the pancreas is a rare disorder that occurs most commonly in young women. It has a low potential for malignancy, and the prognosis following resection is favourable.
CASE OUTLINE: An 18-year-old white girl presented with a palpable mass in the right hypochondrium on physical examination associated with epigastric pain, nausea and vomiting, but no fever. Upper gastro-intestinal endoscopy revealed extrinsic compression of the posterior wall of the antrum and duodenal bulb with no mucosal lesion. Computed tomography (CT) scan and then laparotomy revealed

The authors present a clinical case characterized by a rare combination of diseases: Meckel's diverticulum carcinoid and intestinal neoplasm. The clinical aspects and related implications are dealth with at some length, showing the relationship between these and tumour size as well as their importance in the therapeutic management and prognostic evaluation of the carcinoid tumour.

T- and NK-cell lymphoproliferative disorders of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract are uncommon, but are important to recognise as there may be morphological and immunophenotypic overlap between lymphoid lesions with vastly different clinical outcomes. Recent data have led to the reclassification of some lymphomas and inclusion of new entities in the 2016 revision of World Health Organization (WHO) classification of lymphoid neoplasms. It has become clear that enteropathy associated T-cell lymphoma (EATL), formerly thought to be composed of two subtypes known as type I and type II, are distinct e

The immunoreactivity of anti-neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and anti-Leu-7 on formalin-fixed sections of human salivary gland neoplasms was determined by the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex method. In addition, neuropeptides, such as vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, somatostatin, and substance P, in human salivary gland neoplasms were expressed, whereas other polypeptides, including glucagon, cholecystokinin, leu-enkephalin and calcitonin, were absent. When 182 paraffin-embedded examples of human salivary gland tumors, including 112 benign and 70 malignant neoplasms, were examined immunohist

Large bowel obstruction is a known surgical emergency. Common causes include malignancies of the colon and benign conditions, including hernias, adhesions, and other less common conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease, and tuberculosis. However, the coexistence of hernias and colon neoplasm is a rare finding, one that is usually identified intraoperatively. In addition, there is no consensus on the best treatment route. We present a case of an 86-year-old male who presented in an emergency setting with an initial diagnosis of intestinal obstruction and an incarcerat
