Removal of a Retroperitoneal Foreign Body by Laparoscopic Surgery.

Migration of intrauterine devices (IUDs) into the abdominal cavity is rare. In this report, we describe a patient in whom a levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) device was initially misplaced outside of the uterus, likely due to stenosis of the cervix following a conization procedure for carcinoma in situ. The patient presented with persistent abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding. The LNG-IUS was not visible on physical examination and ultrasound imaging, requiring intraoperative abdominal radiography and postoperative computed tomography for localization. Once localized, we proceeded w

Translocated intrauterine contraceptive device: experiences of two medical centers with risk factors and the need for surgical treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To present experiences of 21 patients with a translocated intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) who required surgical treatment and to discuss the diagnosis, surgical management, and complications of such cases. STUDY DESIGN: The cases of 21 patients who were hospitalized with the diagnosis of translocated IUD and had surgical treatment were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 25.7 (range, 20-35). Of the 21 patients, 17 (81%) were in puerperium. IUDs were inserted by trained midwife nurses in 17 cases (81%). Severe lower abdominal pain was reporte

CASE REPORT: RETRIEVAL OF AN INTRA-UTERINE CONTRACEPTIVE DEVICE PENETRATING THROUGH THE WALL OF THE RECTUM.

A Copper T intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) is a commonly employed method of reversible contraception for women. Its use has been associated with complications such as bleeding, perforation and migration to adjacent organs or peritoneum. Uterine wall erosion and subsequent perforation by an IUCD is not unusual; however the subsequent intraperitoneal migration, to and perforation of the rectum is uncommon. We present a case of 31-year-old female with an IUCD migrating through the uterus possibly into the peritoneal cavity and subsequently eroding into the posterior rectal wall. It was r

A Case of Migrating "Saf-T-Coil" Presenting With a Vesicovaginal Fistula and Vesicovaginal Calculus.

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are reliable method for contraception. Although, they are generally regarded as safe, serious consequences may occur in case of uterine perforation or intravesical migration. We present a rare case of a 74 year old lady with a forgotten IUD for 42 years resulting in intravesical migration, formation of vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) without uterine perforation, complete urinary incontinence, recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) and a large vesicovaginal calculus.

Intrauterine device embedded in omentum of postpartum patient with a markedly retroverted uterus: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The intrauterine device is a popular form of long-acting reversible contraception. Although generally safe, one of the most serious complications of intrauterine device use is uterine perforation. Risk factors for perforation include position of the uterus, force exerted during intrauterine device insertion, postpartum period, and breastfeeding. This case is important and needs to be reported because it highlights the need to assess risk factors for uterine perforation. It adds to the medical literature because it examines the relationship between position of the uterus and the loc

Ovarian embedding of a transmigrated intrauterine device: a case report and literature review.

AIM: To report an unusual location of a transmigrated IUD which become embedded in the right ovary causing chronic pelvic pain and dyspareunia. CASE: A 22-year-old woman who had an IUD (Copper T), inserted 7 years ago presented with complaint of lower abdominal pain. Pelvic ultrasonographic examination revealed ovarian embedding of the IUD. Laparoscopic IUD removal was successfully performed. DISCUSSION: De novo lower abdominal pain in a woman with an IUD in situ should alert the clinician to the possibility of total or partial transmigration of the device into the pelvis or abdomen. Ovarian

Asymptomatic ileal perforation of an intrauterine device.

CASE REPORT: A 43-year old para three woman had a total abdominal hysterectomy for severe menorrhagia. During the procedure, a copper intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) 'TCu 380A' was found extruding from within the small bowel lumen and partly perforating into the posterior uterine wall. The apparent insertion of the IUD was asymptomatic and she remained asymptomatic for a period of 8 years prior to presentation. CONCLUSION: This is a report of an asymptomatic perforation into the ileum discovered during a hysterectomy after an asymptomatic period of 8 years in situ.

An Enigmatic Case of Rectal Bleeding in a Young Woman-A Forgotten Intrauterine Device, Perforation and Rectal Involvement: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Background: Perforation associated with intrauterine devices (IUDs) occurs in approximately 1 in 1000 insertions and may be either partial or complete. Perforation may be primary, occurring during device insertion, or secondary, developing after the device has remained in situ for more than eight weeks. Typical symptoms of IUD perforation include chronic pain and intestinal obstruction. Rarely, the device is found either completely within the rectal lumen or partially embedded in the rectal wall with partial intraluminal extension. Removal of the device may require colonoscopy, laparoscopy, or

The "Lost" and "Found" IUD: a case of concurrent intrauterine and intraperitoneal devices with delayed recognition.

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are widely used and highly effective long-acting reversible contraceptives; however, rare complications such as uterine perforation and device migration may occur. A critical and preventable clinical pitfall is the misinterpretation of missing retrieval strings as spontaneous expulsion, which may lead to reinsertion without imaging confirmation, resulting in dual IUD retention, delayed diagnosis, and potential complications including visceral organ injury. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 45-year-old woman with an incidental finding of dual IUDs

Case report: Bladder stone caused by dislocated Cu-IUD.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The intrauterine device, usually in the form of a copper IUD or levonorgestrel intrauterine system, is a widely used contraceptive method. The risk of uterine perforation is low and ranges from 0.3 to 2.2 per 1000 insertions for Cu-IUD. The bladder, with 24 %, is, after the bowel, the second most common location among all intra-abdominal locations of the migrated IUDs, which can cause development of a bladder stone. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 32-year-old woman who attends with increasing dysuria. She reported using an IUD before her last pregnancy.

A premenopausal woman with fragmentation of a nonexpired copper intrauterine device and concomitant presence of Actinomyces species.

Actinomyces spp. has been shown to form biofilms when exposed to copper, possibly enhancing its degradation. Fragmentation and migration of the copper coil on an intrauterine device (IUD) is rare, but the concomitant presence of Actinomyces spp. may increase its incidence. We present the first case of a fragmented copper IUD within its lifespan of 10 years, with documented Actinomyces genitourinary tract colonization in a premenopausal woman.

Early pregnancy likely caused by an intravesical intrauterine device.

A 42-year-old female with remote history of intrauterine device (IUD) placement presented with gross hematuria, urinary urgency, and dyspareunia. Cystoscopy showed an encrusted, free-floating intravesical foreign body consistent with a heavily calcified IUD. It was removed endoscopically using holmium laser cystolitholapaxy. The patient remained symptom free postoperatively. While most intravesical IUDs are thought to be the result of migration after several months, this patient became pregnant within 4 weeks after initial insertion. Therefore this may represent a case either of early intraves

Imaging of mechanical tubal occlusion devices and potential complications.

The increasing use of permanent mechanical contraceptive devices has placed growing demands on radiologists. Hysteroscopically placed tubal occlusion devices, in particular, must be evaluated promptly and carefully to verify that they are in a satisfactory location and are functioning effectively. Hysterosalpingography, radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging all may be useful for this purpose; however, the acquisition and interpretation of images of these devices can be challenging and requires specific knowledge. Verification of tubal occlusion with

Wandering intrauterine contraceptive device: An unusual travel to the sigmoid colon.

Intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) is common choice for contraception. Migration of IUCD is one of the complications that are encountered. Here we report a case of IUCD migration to the sigmoid colon. A 39-year-old Malay lady carrying a copper T type of IUCD presented with missing thread then underwent examination under anaesthesia, proceeded to hysteroscopy but failed removal. Abdominal ultrasound detected it in the left lower quadrant of abdomen. She then underwent diagnostic laparoscopy where the device was found to be embedded in the sigmoid colon. Technical difficulty necessitated c
