Lateral asymmetry in perceptual judgments of reading disabled, hyperactive and control children.

Three groups of 11 year old boys, classified as reading-disabled/hyperactive, hyperactive, and normal controls, made same-different judgments to pairs of verbal or visuospatial stimuli presented simultaneously to the right or left side of a fixation point. Two experimental paradigms were used, one emphasizing comparison judgments from memory, the other, new comparison judgments. Reading-disabled boys made more errors of judgment than did controls. All subjects exhibited faster reaction times for different judgments of pairs appearing in the left visual field. Reaction times were longer and err

A comparison of transverse and vertical pharyngeal flaps using electromyography and judgments of nasality.

Previous studies have reported less than adequate speech results for vertical types of pharyngeal flaps with some patients. However, no controlled judgments of nasality have been reported for transverse pharyngeal flaps, and no comparative studies have been done. In this investigation, 21 listeners evaluated nasality in two groups of seven cleft palate patients. One group had had vertical pharyngeal flaps, while the other group had had transverse pharyngeal flaps. The possible relationship of observable electromyographic activity to nasality was also studied. The results indicated that percept

[The judgment on gas gangrene in the framework of liability cases and applications for the extension of compensation].

On the basis of law of the German Demoncratic Republic the problems for the judgement of clostridial infections in medical reports are discussed. If in exogenous infections severe mistakes against fundamental rules of surgery are evident, malpractice must be affirmed. Endogenous infections after operations on the gastrointestinal tract are in mostly all cases induced by bacteria for the viscera. Prophylaxis is not always possible, infections are not avoidable. So in these cases for malpractice there is practically no basis. The conditions for "materian aid" are also not existant.

Phronesis and Nursing Clinical Judgment Revisited: A Reappraisal of Benner's Model of Expert Practice.

Within nursing, clinical judgment is widely recognized as an essential professional competency underpinning clinical care, educational formation, and research development. Recent scholarship has renewed attention to clinical judgment. However, its conceptual structure remains undertheorized with respect to its normative and evaluative dimensions. This article argues that phronesis, understood as the Aristotelian concept of practical wisdom, is constitutive of nursing clinical judgment. Drawing on philosophical and nursing virtue ethics perspectives, it examines Patricia Benner's account of exp

Shared Friend Criteria Modulate Aesthetic Judgment of Faces and Paintings but Not Moral Beauty.

Aesthetic preferences are shaped by social context, yet the influence of close peers' standards across different aesthetic domains remains unclear. This study investigated whether friends' aesthetic criteria modulate individuals' judgments of faces, paintings, and moral beauty using a modified social conformity paradigm across three experiments. Results showed that individuals' aesthetic judgments of faces and paintings were significantly influenced by their friends' ratings, shifting systematically toward peer evaluations. In contrast, judgments of moral beauty were largely unaffected by peer

Development and validation of a scenario-based judgment skills scale on parental fever management.

PURPOSE: Fever management among caregivers has often been described through the lens of "fever phobia," that is, the exaggerated fear of fever, frequently attributed to knowledge deficits and assessed using non-validated questionnaires. This study developed and validated the first standardized instrument to assess caregivers' judgment skills in managing childhood fever, focusing on how knowledge and other factors interact to shape decision-making. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 290 caregivers of children recruited from pediatric clinics and social media in Southern Switz

AI as a partner in assessment: generating situational judgment tests with large language models.

Situational Judgment Tests (SJTs) are important tools for evaluating individual abilities by presenting specific scenarios and assessing the responses. This study explores the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) in developing SJTs, with emotional regulation as an example. We proposed and evaluated two approaches using ERNIE 4.0, an advanced Chinese LLM: generating new items from scratch (Approach 1) and adapting items from existing examples (Approach 2). The quality of generated items was assessed through expert evaluations and empirical testing with 93 psychology undergraduates and 184

Classifier Effect Masked by Taxonomic Relations: Through the Lens of a Similarity Judgment Task.

Classifiers, as a reference-tracking device of nouns, have caught much research attention over the past two decades. Beyond their grammatical function, classifiers are unique in their semantic association with the internal properties of head nouns, which raises questions about the relationship between language and cognition. Previous research reported a classifier effect (e.g., Saalbach and Imai in Lang Cogn Processes 27(3):381-428, 2012; Speed et al. in J Exp Psychol Learn Memory Cogn 7(4):625-640, 2021), with classifier speakers (vs. non-classifier speakers) showing greater sensitivity to pa

Is This Within Reach? Left but Not Right Brain Damage Affects Affordance Judgment Tendencies.

The ability to judge accurately whether or not an action can be accomplished successfully is critical for selecting appropriate response options that enable adaptive behaviors. Such affordance judgments are thought to rely on the perceived fit between environmental properties and knowledge of one's current physical capabilities. Little, however, is currently known about the ability of individuals to judge their own affordances following a stroke, or about the underlying neural mechanisms involved. To address these issues, we employed a signal detection approach to investigate the impact of lef

Probability of Heat Intolerance: Standardized Interpretation of Heat-Tolerance Testing Results Versus Specialist Judgment.

CONTEXT: The heat-tolerance test (HTT) is a screening tool for secondary prevention of exertional heat illness by the Israel Defense Forces. To discern participant tolerance, recruits are exposed to intermediate environmental and exercise stresses, and their physiological responses, core temperature, and heart rate are monitored. When their physiological measures rise at a higher rate or exceed the upper levels of absolute values compared with other participants, heat intolerance (HI) is diagnosed. OBJECTIVE: To develop a mathematical model to interpret HTT results and provide a quantitative

Temporal-order judgment of audiovisual events involves network activity between parietal and prefrontal cortices.

Our perception of the temporal order of everyday external events depends on the integrated sensory information in the brain. Our understanding of the brain mechanism for temporal-order judgment (TOJ) of unisensory events, particularly in the visual domain, is advanced. In case of multisensory events, however, there are unanswered questions. Here, by using physically synchronous and asynchronous auditory-visual events in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments, we identified the brain network that is associated with the perception of the temporal order of multisensory events. Hyperthymic temperament and brightness judgment in healthy subjects: involvement of left inferior orbitofrontal cortex.

BACKGROUND: Hyperthymic temperament has been generally accepted as one of premorbid temperament of bipolar disorders. Since recent several studies indicate an association between illuminance and hyperthymic temperament, it can be hypothesized that more hyperthymic temperament subjects have a different threshold of brightness or darkness perception in comparison with less hyperthymic temperament subjects. METHODS: We compared the threshold of brightness and darkness judgment between more and less hyperthymic subjects, and by simultaneously using fMRI we compared activations of whole brain betw

Reliability of three Benton Judgment of Line Orientation short forms in idiopathic Parkinson's disease.

Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) often exhibit deficits in visuospatial functioning throughout the course of their disease. These deficits should be carefully assessed as they may have implications for patient safety and disease severity. One of the most commonly administered tests of visuospatial ability, the Benton Judgment of Line Orientation (JLO), consists of 30 pairs of lines requiring the patient to match the orientation of two lines to an array of 11 lines on a separate page. Reliable short forms have been constructed out of the full JLO form, but the reliability of these form

Selective impairment of cognitive empathy for moral judgment in adults with high functioning autism.

Faced with a moral dilemma, conflict arises between a cognitive controlled response aimed at maximizing welfare, i.e. the utilitarian judgment, and an emotional aversion to harm, i.e. the deontological judgment. In the present study, we investigated moral judgment in adult individuals with high functioning autism/Asperger syndrome (HFA/AS), a clinical population characterized by impairments in prosocial emotions and social cognition. In Experiment 1, we compared the response patterns of HFA/AS participants and neurotypical controls to moral dilemmas with low and high emotional saliency. We fou

When good evidence goes bad: the weak evidence effect in judgment and decision-making.

An indispensable principle of rational thought is that positive evidence should increase belief. In this paper, we demonstrate that people routinely violate this principle when predicting an outcome from a weak cause. In Experiment 1 participants given weak positive evidence judged outcomes of public policy initiatives to be less likely than participants given no evidence, even though the evidence was separately judged to be supportive. Experiment 2 ruled out a pragmatic explanation of the result, that the weak evidence implies the absence of stronger evidence. In Experiment 3, weak positive e

Goodness behind a wheel: moral judgment in realistic traffic simulations featuring Agents, Deeds, and Consequences.

Investigating how different stakeholders evaluate traffic situations is essential for aligning autonomous vehicle (AV) decision-making with common-sense moral expectations. Yet, empirical studies on traffic moral judgment remain limited and almost exclusively focused on dramatic high-stakes situations. To address this gap, this paper presents two studies testing moral judgment in low-stakes ordinary traffic simulations. Drawing on the ADC model of moral judgment, both studies systematically manipulated key moral features: the character of the driver (Agent), adherence to traffic rules (Deed),

Between expertise and judgment: Discordance between forensic psychiatric reports and judicial decisions in Brazilian litigation.

This study investigates the discordance between forensic psychiatric reports and judicial decisions in Brazilian civil and administrative litigation. Using a retrospective documentary design, we analyzed a random sample of 200 cases (50 per domain) from the Brazilian Electronic Judicial Process (PJe) across four areas: social security (INSS), public service examinations, access to medications, and alleged medical error. Overall concordance was high (87.5%), but 12.5% of cases showed discordance, which clustered significantly in public service examinations (20%) and medical error disputes (20%)
