Kangaroo mother care to reduce morbidity and mortality in low birthweight infants.

BACKGROUND: Kangaroo mother care (KMC), originally defined as skin-to-skin contact between a mother and her newborn, frequent and exclusive or nearly exclusive breastfeeding, and early discharge from hospital, has been proposed as an alternative to conventional neonatal care for low birthweight (LBW) infants. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether evidence is available to support the use of KMC in LBW infants as an alternative to conventional neonatal care before or after the initial period of stabilization with conventional care, and to assess beneficial and adverse effects. SEARCH METHODS: We us

Care of the growth-restricted newborn.

With the first 1,000 days of life proving to be a critical window of opportunity for physical and cognitive growth and development, an optimal intrauterine environment is vital. If fetus needs are compromised prenatally, there is an increased risk of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), and infants being born premature, low birth weight (LBW), or small-for-gestational age (SGA). Specialized care of these high-risk infants is necessary in terms of preconception interventions, resuscitation, thermoregulation, nutritional support and kangaroo mother care. Significant evidence supports exclusiv

The effect of kangaroo ward care in comparison with "intermediate intensive care" on the growth velocity in preterm infant with birth weight <1100 g: randomized control trial.

UNLABELLED: Kangaroo mother care (KMC) reduces neonatal mortality, neonatal sepsis and improves growth outcome in preterm infants. In this study, we compared the efficacy of "baby care in kangaroo ward (KWC)" with "baby care in intermediate intensive care (IIC)" in stable preterm infants (birth weight <1100 g) for improving the growth velocity till term corrected age. One hundred and forty-one infants were randomized to KWC (n = 71) or IIC (n = 70) once the infant reached a weight of 1150 g. Infants in the KWC group were shifted to the KWC immediately after randomization and those in the IIC g

Does daily kangaroo care provide sustained pain and stress relief in preterm infants?

OBJECTIVES: 1. Determine whether stress in preterm infants, measured with salivary cortisol, decreases after five days of Kangaroo Care (KC) compared to five days of Standard Care (SC). 2. To determine whether kangaroo care provides sustainable pain relief beyond the period of skin-to-skin holding. STUDY DESIGN: Preterm infants (n = 38) born at 27-30 weeks gestational age were randomized to either the KC or the SC group and received the allocated intervention starting on day of life (DOL) five and continuing for five days. Salivary cortisol was collected on DOL five and again on DOL ten. Diff

Extrauterine growth restriction definitions and associated factors among Colombian preterm infants: a case control study.

BACKGROUND: Extrauterine growth restriction (EUGR) is common in preterm infants and may impair neurodevelopment. The absence of a standardized definition limits early identification. We evaluated agreement and factors associated with EUGR using cross-sectional and longitudinal definitions. METHODS: Matched case-control study in three kangaroo mother care programs. EUGR was defined cross-sectionally and longitudinally. Cases were matched by gestational age and city (1:2 cross-sectional; 1:1 longitudinal). Conditional logistic regression assessed associations with maternal, perinatal, and nutri

Associations of intimate partner violence with postnatal health practices in Bihar, India.

BACKGROUND: Reducing neonatal mortality is a global priority, and improvements in postnatal health (PNH) practices in India are needed to do so. Intimate partner violence (IPV) may be associated with PNH practices, but little research has assessed this relationship. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of data from a representative household sample of mothers of neonates 0-11 months old in Bihar, India was conducted. The relationship between lifetime IPV experience (physical violence only, sexual violence only, or both physical and sexual violence) and PNH practices [clean cord care, kangaroo

Effectiveness of the nurse-led multi-component BRIDGE program on maternal competence and selected post-discharge outcomes of preterm babies: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Mothers require sufficient knowledge and skill in caring for a preterm newborn at home after discharge. Infant weight gain and other health parameters can be used to assess the quality of care received. A comprehensive early intervention program can help mothers through this transitional period. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of the BRIDGE Program versus standard care in improving maternal competence and the selected post-discharge outcomes of preterm newborns admitted to the tertiary-level hospital in India. METHODS: We conducted a single-blinded, two-arm, randomized controlle

Kangaroo mother care for low birthweight infants: a randomized controlled trial in different settings.

A randomized controlled trial was carried out for 1 y in three tertiary and teaching hospitals, in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Yogyakarta (Indonesia) and Merida (Mexico), to study the effectiveness, feasibility, acceptability and cost of kangaroo mother care (KMC) when compared to conventional methods of care (CMC). About 29% of 649 low birthweight infants (LBWI; 1000-1999 g) died before eligibility. Of the survivors, 38% were excluded for various reasons, 149 were randomly assigned to KMC (almost exclusive skin-to-skin care after stabilization), and 136 to CMC (warm room or incubator care). Feasibility of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) Implementation in Depok City, Indonesia.

Background: The infant and neonatal mortality rate in Depok City is still high, with low birth weight (LBW) and premature births being one of the main causes. In 2018, 14 out of 41 cases of early neonatal death were due to LBW. Studies show that Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) can prevent or reduce LBW deaths caused by hypothermia, but the implementation is still not evenly distributed. Objective: Describe KMC feasibility as a supporting material for a KMC policy umbrella at Depok City. Method: Qualitative research was conducted with a Rapid Assessment Procedure (RAP) design. A total of 56 informan

Use of WHO quality assessment/quality improvement tool for maternal and newborn care for gap analysis and POCQI methodology to improve preterm neonatal outcomes at a tertiary care centre: a quality improvement initiative.

INTRODUCTION: Preterm birth is a leading cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity globally. Evidence suggests that over three-quarters of premature deaths can be prevented through cost-effective interventions. However, compliance with evidence-based guidelines in neonatal care often falls <50%, even in well-resourced settings. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The study evaluated system gaps using WHO Quality Assessment/Quality Improvement Tool for Maternal and Newborn Care (WHO QA/QI MN) and implemented Point of Care Quality Improvement (POCQI) methodology to improve and sustain the composite outcome of

Evidence-Based Updates on the First Week of Exclusive Breastfeeding Among Infants ≥35 Weeks.

The nutritional and immunologic properties of human milk, along with clear evidence of dose-dependent optimal health outcomes for both mothers and infants, provide a compelling rationale to support exclusive breastfeeding. US women increasingly intend to breastfeed exclusively for 6 months. Because establishing lactation can be challenging, exclusivity is often compromised in hopes of preventing feeding-related neonatal complications, potentially affecting the continuation and duration of breastfeeding. Risk factors for impaired lactogenesis are identifiable and common. Clinicians must be able

Barriers and facilitators to utilisation of KMC among preterm babies on CPAP.

INTRODUCTION: Preterm births are a leading cause of death and illness, with rates rising in Uganda. CPAP helps with respiratory problems, and kangaroo mother care (KMC) stabilises temperature, encourages bonding, and supports health. Yet, KMC for preterm infants on CPAP is rarely used in countries like Uganda. This study explores challenges and enablers for KMC in these cases. METHODS: The study used a cross-sectional design with qualitative methods at St. Francis Hospital Nsambya. NICU healthcare workers were conveniently sampled and interviewed until saturation. Data was transcribed, coded,
