Remission of Behçet's disease and keratoconjunctivitis sicca in an HIV-infected patient treated with HAART.

A 34-year-old woman presented with a 10-year history of recurrent oral and genital ulcerations and recurrent episodes of bilateral conjunctivitis associated with HIV infection. A diagnosis of Behçet's disease (BD) in association with keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) was made after exclusion of other viral and autoimmune diseases according to the international criteria for BD. This is the first reported case of a combination of BD and KCS in a patient with HIV infection in which a complete resolution was observed as a result of successful highly active antiretroviral therapy. The likelihood tha

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome. A longitudinal study of ocular parameters.

Thirty-four patients, all fulfilling the Copenhagen criteria for Primary Sjögren's Syndrome, were examined retrospectively in order to evaluate possible longitudinal alterations in Schirmer-1-test results, Rose-bengal score, break-up time and level of ocular score. Twenty-three of the patients were characterized as Bromhexine responders according to their initially positive response to systemic treatment (16 mg x 3 daily) and 11 patients were Bromhexine non-responders. All patients were treated with tear substitutes during the entire observation period of 27 to 76 months (mean 53 months), and

A comparative clinical study of tear substitutes in normal subjects and in patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

The effect upon the tear film of a new tear substitute, Dacriosol, was compared to a non-viscous solution, saline, an to a highly viscous solution, Isopto Plain, in 15 normal healthy subjects and in 15 patients with mild to moderate keratoconjunctivitis sicca. No differences between the test solutions could be measured 3 h after last medication regarding: Schirmer's test, break-up time, rose bengal staining, corneal sensitivity and tear content of lysozyme. The test persons could not discriminate subjectively between the effect of the test solutions. The investigation parameters show an equal

Improvement of the ocular surface using hypotonic 0.4% hyaluronic acid drops in keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

BACKGROUND: The ocular surface changes of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) could be the result of the effect of an altered tear film on the epithelial environment. PURPOSE: To evaluate the possibility of improving the environmental conditions of the ocular surface by lowering tear osmolarity, increasing tear film volume and stabilising the tear film. Also, to study the effect of such an improvement on the epithelial cells of the ocular surface. METHODS: One hundred and thirty-five patients with a diagnosis of KCS were treated on a randomised basis with either unpreserved hypotonic 0.4% hyalu

Topical applications of allogeneic adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells ameliorate the canine keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

BACKGROUND: Canine keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) is predominantly an immune-mediated disease. Current therapy of canine KCS is mainly by immunosuppressant, but the effectiveness was limited in some patients. In the past few years, some studies showed the results of the use of mesenchymal stem cells in treating canine KCS via periocular injections. However, the periocular injection procedure requires sedation or general anesthesia, and may lead to iatrogenic or incidental injury during the injection process. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of topical allogenic canine ad

Treatment of severe keratoconjunctivitis sicca by parotid duct transposition after tympanic neurectomy in rabbits.

PURPOSE: To investigate the feasibility of parotid duct transposition after tympanic neurectomy to treat severe keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) in rabbits. METHODS: Thirty rabbits were divided into three groups in experiment 1. One eye was operated on, and the contralateral eye served as the control. In the KCS group, the lacrimal gland, harderian gland, and nictitating membrane were removed. In the group with parotid duct transposition (DT), the parotid duct was transposed into the lower conjunctival fornix. In the group with parotid duct transposition after tympanic neurectomy (DTTN), the

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca with associated secondary uveitis elicited in rats after systemic xylazine/ketamine anesthesia.

The systemic administration of an anesthetic dosage of a combination of xylazine and ketamine hydrochloride produced an acute exposure keratopathy which progressed into a syndrome resembling keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Within a few minutes corneal changes occurred that were characterized by viscous mucus, loss of corneal luster and dryness. Other acute but transient changes included development of cataracts, mydriasis and proptosis. Progressive changes were observed in the cornea within 4 days which lasted at least 8 weeks in some cases, and included punctate epithelial keratopathy progressing

Tear film osmolarity and ocular surface disease in two rabbit models for keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

We report the natural history of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) in two rabbit models. The first one (full KCS model) was created by closing the lacrimal gland excretory duct, and removing the nictitating membrane and harderian gland. We created the second one (lacrimal gland duct only [LGDO]-KCS model) by closing the lacrimal gland excretory duct. Although tear film osmolarity was abnormally high in both models, it was higher in the full KCS model. Decreases in corneal epithelial glycogen and in conjunctival goblet cell density, and morphological abnormalities of the conjunctiva correlated w

Episcleral cyclosporine A implants for the management of unilateral keratoconjunctivitis sicca in an 8-year-old mare.

An 8-year-old mare was presented for investigation of a 1-month history of blepharospasm, eyelid swelling, corneal edema, and ocular discharge of the right eye (OD). Ophthalmic examination confirmed mucopurulent ocular discharge, conjunctival hyperemia, and a dry, dull appearance to the cornea OD. Schirmer tear test results confirmed an absence of tear production OD (0 mm/min) consistent with keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Treatment with topical 0.2% cyclosporine A resulted in an improvement in clinical signs. An episcleral cyclosporine A implant was placed under standing sedation 5 days after in

Clinical evaluation of a nutraceutical diet as an adjuvant to pharmacological treatment in dogs affected by Keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

BACKGROUND: Canine keratoconjunctivitis sicca (cKCS) is an inflammatory eye condition related to a deficiency in the tear aqueous fraction. Etiopathogenesis of such disease is substantially multifactorial, combining the individual genetic background with environmental factors that contribute to the process of immunological tolerance disruption and, as a consequence, to the emergence of autoimmunity disease. In this occurrence, it is of relevance the role of the physiological immune-dysregulation that results in immune-mediated processes at the basis of cKCS. Current therapies for this ocular d
