Masticatory jaw movement optimization after introduction of occlusal interference.

How 'control' characteristics of masticatory jaw movement, such as skilfulness of the movement, change after alteration in occlusion remains uncertain. For each of 10 healthy adults with good occlusion, an occlusal interference with artificial 'tooth-cusp' was introduced to the crown of the upper molar tooth on the non-working side of unilateral chewing. Mandibular incisor-point movements were then recorded by a 3D tracking device. The introduction of the occlusal interference induced a remarkable increase in the normalized jerk-cost (NJC), prolonged duration of the decelerative phase and lowe

Reality monitoring in anosognosia for hemiplegia.

Anosognosia for hemiplegia (AHP) is a lack of awareness about paralysis following stroke. Recent explanations use a 'forward model' of movement to suggest that AHP patients fail to register discrepancies between internally- and externally-generated sensory information. We predicted that this failure would impair the ability to recall from memory whether information is internally- or externally-generated (i.e., reality monitor). Two experiments examined this prediction. Experiment 1 demonstrated that AHP patients exhibit a reality monitoring deficit for non-motor information (i.e., perceived vs

Human motor planning, motor programming, and use of new task-relevant information with different apraxic syndromes.

Patients with ideomotor apraxia (n = 2) or ideational apraxia (n = 2) after left brain stroke and patients with constructional apraxia (n = 2) after cerebrovascular accident of the right hemisphere, as well as 16 non-brain-damaged control subjects, were given a standardized simple motor task: they were asked to make triangular arm movements of specific size, configuration and spatial orientation without visual control. Motion was analysed three-dimensionally in great detail prior to and after kinaesthetic training using a triangular stencil, and 1 day later. The experiment was conceptualized t

Physiological identification of jaw-movement-related neurons in the trigeminal nucleus of cats.

Although neurons responsive to jaw movements have been identified in most parts of the trigeminal brainstem nuclei, little is known about how this information is relayed to the thalamus and ultimately to the cortex for kinesthetic functions and sensorimotor integration. The present extracellular recording experiments showed that a substantial amount of movement-related information is relayed to the thalamus through the caudal part of subnucleus interpolaris (Vi) in adult cats. Vertical jaw displacements, natural mechanical stimuli, and electrical stimulation of the masseter nerve were used to

Effect of stochastic resonance on proprioception and kinesthesia in anterior cruciate ligament reconstructed patients.

Low amplitude mechanical noise vibration has been shown to improve somatosensory acuity in various clinical groups with comparable deficiencies through a phenomenon known as Stochastic Resonance (SR). This technology showed promising outcomes in improving somatosensory acuity in other clinical patients (e.g., Parkinson's disease and osteoarthritis). Some degree of chronic somatosensory deficiency in the knee has been reported following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery. In this study, the effect of the SR phenomenon on improving knee somatosensory acuity (proprioception a

Reducing immunization discomfort in 4- to 6-year-old children: a randomized clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: The goal was to test a multifaceted distraction method designed to reduce injection-associated pain in school-aged children. METHODS: A clinical trial evaluated 41 children, 4 to 6 years of age, who were given 3 standard prekindergarten immunizations; 21 were assigned randomly to an office routine control group, whereas 20 received a multifaceted, discomfort-reducing intervention. The intervention added verbal suggestions of diminished sensation and a visual focusing activity to the use of ethyl chloride, an established pain-reducing measure. The distraction materials used for the

Continuous theta-burst stimulation over the dorsal premotor cortex interferes with associative learning during object lifting.

When lifting objects of different mass, humans scale grip force according to the expected mass. In this context, humans are able to associate a sensory cue, such as a colour, to a particular mass of an object and link this association to the grip forces necessary for lifting. Here, we study the role of the dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) in setting-up an association between a colour cue and a particular mass to be lifted. Healthy right-handed subjects used a precision grip between the index finger and thumb to lift two different masses. Colour cues provided information about which of the two mass

Plantar hypoesthesia alters time-to-boundary measures of postural control.

Our purpose was to identify the effect of diminished plantar cutaneous sensation on time-to-boundary (TTB) measures of postural control during double and single limb quiet standing. Thirty-two healthy young adults underwent 10 min of ice immersion of the plantar aspect of the feet prior to balance testing. On a different day, the subjects did not receive this intervention prior to testing. A 2 x 2 vision (eyes open, eyes closed) by sensation (control, hypoesthesia) repeated measures design was used to analyze the TTB measures. In double limb stance, there were significant interactions between

A summary of recent research into the development of children with Down's syndrome.

Research over the last 5 to 6 years has indicated quite clearly that Down's syndrome children are a distinct, somewhat delayed group of people, the delays being a result of both physical and cognitive problems. What is considerably more positive is that much may apparently be done to help ameliorate the problems. However, the older Down's syndrome child has the most serious problems, and comparatively little research is being performed with this age group. What is being done tends to be less integrated than the work being done with younger children, leading to less generalisability across area

Enhanced Pitch Discrimination for Cochlear Implant Users with a New Haptic Neuroprosthetic.

The cochlear implant (CI) is the most widely used neuroprosthesis, recovering hearing for more than half a million severely-to-profoundly hearing-impaired people. However, CIs still have significant limitations, with users having severely impaired pitch perception. Pitch is critical to speech understanding (particularly in noise), to separating different sounds in complex acoustic environments, and to music enjoyment. In recent decades, researchers have attempted to overcome shortcomings in CIs by improving implant technology and surgical techniques, but with limited success. In the current st

Fibers innervating different parts of the lateral line system of an Antarctic notothenioid, Trematomus bernacchii, have similar frequency responses, despite large variation in the peripheral morphology.

Regional differences in the architecture and size of lateral line canals and neuromasts were measured in an Antarctic fish, Trematomus bernacchii, and the data were used in models of canal and cupular mechanics to predict the frequency response of these two peripheral structures. These modeled predictions were then compared to frequency response functions measured with single unit recording techniques from anterior and posterior lateral line fibers innervating different canals on the head and trunk of fish of various sizes. Despite large variations in the peripheral morphology of head and trun

Eye movements in patients with Wallenberg's syndrome.

We studied electro-oculographic and videotape recordings of eye movements in six patients with Wallenberg's syndrome. With fixation, all patients had a spontaneous rotatory nystagmus with the fast phase directed toward the intact side. With loss of fixation, the patients' eyes deviated tonically toward the side of the lesion. Voluntary and involuntary saccades had larger amplitude when directed toward the side of the lesion than away from it. The spontaneous nystagmus predictably interacted with all slow eye movements, producing asymmetric smooth-pursuit, optokinetic, and vestibular responses.

[Metabolic myelosis (author's transl)].

102 patients suffering from metabolic myelosis were studied clinically. Among the early signs and symptoms, pins and needles, freezing or burning feet, and impaired kinaesthesia were the most frequent ones. With the syndrome progressing, motor disturbances of supramotoneuronal character developed. Every third patient had neurogenic ischuria. Examinations of the cerebrospinal fluid did not reveal any deviation characteristic or "typical" of myelosis. Different pathogenic factors were detected by analysis according to the rules of internal medicine. However, no single factor defining myelosis ae

Does somatosensory discrimination activate different brain areas in children with unilateral cerebral palsy compared to typically developing children? An fMRI study.

Aside from motor impairment, many children with unilateral cerebral palsy (CP) experience altered tactile, proprioceptive, and kinesthetic awareness. Sensory deficits are addressed in rehabilitation programs, which include somatosensory discrimination exercises. In contrast to adult stroke patients, data on brain activation, occurring during somatosensory discrimination exercises, are lacking in CP children. Therefore, this study investigated brain activation with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during passively guided somatosensory discrimination exercises in 18 typically develop

Kinesthetic motor imagery modulates intermuscular coherence.

Intermuscular coherence can identify oscillatory coupling between two electromyographic (EMG) signals, measuring common presynaptic drive to motor neurons. Beta band oscillations (15-30 Hz) are hypothesized to originate largely from primary motor cortex, and are reduced during dynamic relative to static motor tasks. It has yet to be established whether motor imagery modulates beta intermuscular coherence. Using visual feedback, 10 unimpaired participants completed eighteen trials of pinching their right thumb and index finger at a constant force. During the 60-second trials, participants simul

Clinical assessment of motor imagery after stroke.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate: (1) the effects of a stroke on motor imagery vividness as measured by the Kinesthetic and Visual Imagery Questionnaire (KVIQ-20); (2) the influence of the lesion side; and (3) the symmetry of motor imagery. METHODS: Thirty-two persons who had sustained a stroke, in the right (n = 19) or left (n = 13) cerebral hemisphere, and 32 age-matched healthy persons participated. The KVIQ-20 assesses on a 5-point ordinal scale the clarity of the image (visual scale) and the intensity of the sensations (kinesthetic scale) that the subjects are able to

Schizotypal personality traits and prediction of one's own movements in motor control: what causes an abnormal sense of agency?

BACKGROUND: Positive schizophrenic symptoms, especially passivity phenomena, including auditory hallucinations, may be caused by an abnormal sense of agency, which people with schizotypal personality traits also tend to exhibit. A sense of agency asserts that it is oneself who is causing or generating an action. It is possible that this abnormal sense of self-agency is attributable to the abnormal prediction of one's own movements in motor control. METHOD: We conducted an experiment using the "disappeared cursor" paradigm in which non-clinical, healthy participants were required to click on a

Wearable kinesthetic system for joint knee flexion-extension monitoring in gait analysis.

In this paper we investigated on the possibility of using a wearable kinesthetic system for monitoring flexion-extension of the knee joint during deambulation. The final goal was to provide an unobtrusive technique to identify the clinical stage of the recovery process of patients affected by venous ulcer. These patients have great difficulty in walking depending on the severity level of disease and after a surgical operation they usually progressively improve up to recover their normal walking capability. Typically, they are monitored by means of invasive instrumentation. On the contrary, our

Illusory movements of the contralesional hand in patients with body image disorders.

OBJECTIVES: In the present study, we assess whether illusory sensations of movement can be elicited in patients with right brain damage (RBD). METHODS: Ten RBD patients (three with disorders of bodily representations) were asked to report whether movements of their right hand induced any illusory somatic or motor sensations. Inquiries on anomalous sensation of movement of the left hand were carried out while subjects: 1) observed the moving hand in a mirror propped vertically along the parasagittal plane; 2) looked directly at the moving hand; 3) looked at the still hand; 4) kept their eyes c

Formation and lateralization of internal representations underlying motor commands during precision grip.

The capability to store and retrieve weight-related information from a lift to scale the force output during a subsequent lift was examined in 10 healthy adults and 50 children (age 2-10 years), as well as a 22-year-old patient with corpus callosum agenesis. Subjects lifted a test object between the thumb and index finger while the isometric fingertip forces were measured. The results suggest that both healthy children and adults can transfer weight-related information between the right and left hand, although a lateralization was found. Also, the storage and retrieval of weight-related inform
