Translational and rotational knee joint stability in anterior and posterior cruciate-retaining knee arthroplasty.

This study investigated passive translational and rotational stability properties of the intact knee joint, after bicruciate-retaining bi-compartmental knee arthroplasty (BKA) and after posterior cruciate retaining total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Fourteen human cadaveric knee specimens were used in this study, and a robotic manipulator with six-axis force/torque sensor was used to test the joint laxity in anterior-posterior translation, valgus-varus, and internal-external rotation. The results show the knee joint stability after bicruciate-retaining BKA is similar to that of the native knee. On

Risk factors for periprosthetic joint infection after primary artificial hip and knee joint replacements.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to explore the risk factors for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) after primary artificial hip and knee joint replacements by performing a case-control study. METHODOLOGY: The clinical data of patients receiving primary hip and knee joint replacements were retrospectively analyzed. The case group included 96 patients who suffered from PJI, comprising 42 cases of hip joint replacement and 54 cases of knee joint replacement. Another 192 patients who received joint replacement at the ratio of 1:2 in the same period and did not suffer from PJI were selected as the contro

High levels of glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) are associated with lower knee joint cartilage quality and higher knee joint symptoms in healthy individuals.

In an asymptomatic population, we investigated the relationships between glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and cartilage T2 relaxation time at the knee joint level. Fourteen and 17 participants with high and normal levels of HbA1c were recruited, respectively. A blood sample was used to determine the HbA1c level. T2 relaxation time (T2) of the superficial and deep parts of the femoral cartilage in the anterior, central, and posterior topographical sites was calculated using magnetic resonance (1.5 T) images. Each participant completed a knee injury and osteoarthritis outcome score questionnaire (KO

A novel knee joint laxity measurement device in mice.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is a leading cause of knee instability and post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). Murine models are widely used to study ACL injury and PTOA progression, but accurate in vivo measurements of knee laxity remain limited by small animal size and lack of reproducible methods. We developed a 3D-printed device to reproducibly measure murine anterior tibial translation (ATT), simulating a clinical anterior drawer test. The system applies a controlled anterior load (5 g or 10 g) to the tibia with the limb secured, followed by high-resolution Faxitron® radiographs

Metabolic Dysregulation in Postmenopause: Implications for Knee Joint Health.

Background/Objectives: Osteoarthritis is a slowly evolving joint disorder defined by cartilage degradation, synovial inflammation, subchondral bone hardening, and the growth of osteophytes. Increasing evidence highlights the role of metabolic factors in osteoarthritis onset and progression. This study investigated the link between metabolic syndrome and the level of knee impairment in postmenopausal respondents suffering from knee osteoarthritis. Methods: A total of 200 participants aged 60-75 years with knee pain were enrolled in this observational cross-sectional study conducted between 2022

IMPORTANCE OF JOINT LINE RESTORATION IN TOTAL KNEE ARTHROPLASTY.

The restoration of the joint line is important for a good functional outcome after a Total Knee Arthroplasty(TKA). Knee joint biomechanics need to be restored as near normal as possible. Joint line elevation leads to anterior knee pain, decrease in range of motion, patella baja ,mid-flexion instability and impingement of patellar tendon. Joint line depression on the other hand leads to patella alta, risk of patellar subluxation and mid-flexion instability of the knee. Various studies have demonstrated various range of acceptable joint line variation but there is no clear acceptable range of jo

Pregnancy Results in Lasting Changes in Knee Joint Laxity.

BACKGROUND: Altered joint laxity can contribute to joint dysfunction. Knee joint laxity has been shown to increase during pregnancy, but its long-term persistence is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether pregnancy leads to lasting increases in knee joint compliance and laxity that persist longer than 4 months postpartum. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: A motion analysis laboratory at an academic medical center. PARTICIPANTS: Fifty healthy women in their first trimester of pregnancy (mean ± SD 29.2 ± 4.3 years old and baseline body mass index 26.0 ± 5.4 kg/m2 ) were recruited.

What makes patients aware of their artificial knee joint?

BACKGROUND: Joint awareness was recently introduced as a new concept for outcome assessment after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Findings from qualitative and psychometric studies suggest that joint awareness is a distinct concept especially relevant to patients with good surgical outcome and patients at late follow-up time points. The aim of this study was to improve the understanding of the concept of joint awareness by identifying situations in which patients are aware of their artificial knee joint and to investigate what bodily sensations and psychological factors raise a patient's awaren

Tranexamic Acid Prophylaxis in Hip and Knee Joint Replacement.

BACKGROUND: The antifibrinolytic agent tranexamic acid (TXA) is widely used for the prevention and treatment of hyperfibrinolytic states, such as in severe polytrauma. It can also be used for the systemic prevention of hemorrhage in elective orthopedic procedures. In this review, we assess the efficacy and risks of the prophylactic administration of tranexamic acid before major endoprosthetic surgery of the hip and knee. METHODS: This review is based on pertinent articles retrieved by a selective literature search in the PubMed and Cochrane Library databases. RESULTS: Endoprosthetic surgery

Septic arthritis of knee joint due to Parvimonas micra.

Parvimonas species are anaerobic, Gram-positive cocci that are a constituent of normal oral and gastrointestinal flora. We present a case of right knee joint septic arthritis due to Parvimonas micra in an immunocompromised patient. A 61-year-old male renal and pancreatic transplant recipient on immunosuppressive therapy was admitted to our hospital due to intense pain, joint swelling and inability to move his right knee over the past 9 months. After synovial fluid was drawn, cultures were positive for P. micra, an anaerobic pathogen that is part of the flora of the oral cavity. We report a rar

Knee joint morphogenesis of the quail (Coturnix japonica) embryo.

Knee joint development and its morphogenetic events have been studied in human, chicken and other animal models and differences have been found in the pattern of the knee joint morphogenesis among the studied species. According to the small number of studies which have focused on the chronology of knee morphogenesis, a "morphogenetic timely pattern" is hard to suggest. Quail is an animal model for which there is no information about knee joint morphogenesis. This study was planned to define the time table of the knee joint structures formation in this bird. For this purpose embryonated Japanes

Treatment of seawater immersion-complicated open-knee joint fracture.

The current study aimed to select suitable remedies for seawater immersion-complicated open-knee joint fracture by exploring the effects of different treatment methods. Forty adult rabbits weighing 2.20 ± 0.25 kg were divided equally into internal fracture fixation group (A), seawater-immersed group with primary internal fixation (B), seawater-immersed group with secondary internal fixation (C), and seawater-immersed group with external fixation (D), using the random-digit table method. Open-femoral internal condylar fracture models were established. Group A was left untreated for 2 h, whereas

Irreducible dislocation of the knee joint: two-stage treatment.

Closed reduction attempts may be unsuccessful after traumatic knee dislocations on rare occasions. The interposition of the soft tissues on the medial aspect of the joint into the femoral condyle and tibial plateau is shown to be the cause of an unsuccessful reduction. In such cases, open reduction is the recommended method of treatment. In our study, we presented a 16-year-old male with an open knee dislocation after a motorcycle accident. As our closed reduction attempt failed, open joint reduction and repair of the medial collateral ligament and retinaculum was performed in the first stage
