Unpredictable susceptibility of emerging clinical moulds to tri-azoles: review of the literature and upcoming challenges for mould identification.

Tri-azoles represent the front-line drugs for the treatment of mould diseases; nevertheless, some emerging moulds, such as Fusarium spp., Scedosporium spp., Mucorales and others, may be less susceptible or resistant to these antifungals. A review of the literature was conducted on the susceptibility of rare moulds to the tri-azoles itraconazole, posaconazole and voriconazole. Particular attention was paid to isolates identified by molecular analyses. The range of susceptibility values described for the three tri-azoles was frequently large (from 0.06 to >16), and a high variability was found w

Determination of FGF23 Levels for the Diagnosis of FGF23-Mediated Hypophosphatemia.

Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) measurement is a critical tool in the evaluation of patients with disordered phosphate homeostasis. Available laboratory reference ranges for blood FGF23 were developed using samples from normophosphatemic individuals. Reliance on such values can lead to misdiagnosis in patients with FGF23-mediated hypophosphatemia, such as X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) and tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO), in whom pathology-driving FGF23 levels can be in the "normal range." To determine FGF23 levels that are diagnostic for the identification of patients with FGF23-mediate

Prediction of severe pediatric community-acquired pneumonia using multimodal fusion of chest radiographs and clinical data.

BACKGROUND: Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children, particularly in low-income countries. Severe CAP is associated with high mortality risk, making early prediction and intervention critical. Despite advancements in artificial intelligence applications for disease prediction, most models have focused on adults, with limited attention to pediatric populations and the integration of chest radiographs and laboratory tests. METHODS: To develop a predictive model for severe CAP in children by integrating multimodal data, including chest radiogr

In situ determination of Si, N, and P utilization by the demosponge Tethya citrina: A benthic-chamber approach.

Sponges consume dissolved silicon (DSi) to build their skeletons. Few studies have attempted to quantify DSi utilization by these organisms and all available determinations come from laboratory measurements. Here we measured DSi consumption rates of the sponge Tethya citrina in its natural habitat, conducting 24h incubations in benthic chambers. Sponges consumed DSi at an average rate of 0.046 ± 0.018 μmol h-1 mL-1 when DSi availability in its habitat was 8.3 ± 1.8 μM. Such DSi consumption rates significantly matched the values predicted by a kinetic model elsewhere developed previously for th

Validation of Smartphone Based Heart Rate Tracking for Remote Treatment of Panic Attacks.

Panic attacks are an impairing mental health problem that affects 11% of adults every year [1]. Those who suffer from panic attacks often do not seek psychological treatment, citing the inability to receive care during their attacks as a contributing factor. A digital medicine solution which provides an accessible, real-time mobile health (mHealth) biofeedback intervention for panic attacks may address this problem. Critical to this approach are methods for capturing physiological arousal during an attack. Herein, we validate an algorithm for capturing physiological arousal using smartphone vi

Natriuretic Peptides in Cardiac Anesthesia and Intensive Care.

Natriuretic peptides, predominantly B-type, are widely used in cardiology as prognostic and diagnostic biomarkers or, much less often, as a substantive treatment tool. They are hormones that are produced mainly in the myocardium in response to overload and ischemia, and their level quite accurately reflects the degree of myocardial dysfunction. Although their use in cardiac anesthesia and intensive care setting seems to be very beneficial for assessing the risk of acute disturbance of myocardial function or its laboratory monitoring, the actual significance of natriuretic peptides in this area

A case of sepsis caused by Streptococcus canis in a dog owner: a first case report of sepsis without dog bite in Japan.

A 91-year-old dog-owning woman with a history of hypertension and femoral neck fracture consulted our hospital with fever and femur pain with redness. Laboratory test results showed leukocytosis with 85% neutrophils and high values of C-reactive protein and procalcitonin. In addition, growth of Gram-positive streptococcus was observed in two independent blood culture sets. The isolated bacterium was identified as Streptococcus canis on the basis of biochemical properties and sequencing analyses of the 16S rRNA gene. The patient recovered completely without critical illness following prompt ant

[Noninvasive monitoring of cerebral oxygen saturation after severe craniocerebral trauma in a Jehovah's witness].

Patients with severe head injury run a high risk of developing secondary cerebral defects. Various methods have so far been described which vary in their continuity, invasiveness and technical aspects for the early detection and treatment of complications. Within this group of patients Jehovah's witnesses pose a particular problem due to their restriction concerning therapeutical possibilities. That may mean an additional danger to the cerebral O2-delivery. This case report highlights on the value of continuous, non-invasive cerebral O2-saturation measurement and its combination with the fiber

Association between the glucose-to-potassium ratio and delirium in critically ill ICU patients: a retrospective study.

It is unclear whether the serum glucose-to-potassium ratio (GPR) is related to delirium in critically ill patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between GPR and delirium in critically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Patients were enrolled from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV (MIMIC-IV). We extracted the mean values of blood glucose and blood potassium on the first day of admission to the ICU and calculated the glucose-to-potassium ratio using Navicat Premium (16.0). In this study, known risk factors for delirium, including age, sex,

Physics-Guided Machine Learning for Predicting Critical Salt Concentration and pH in Sandstone Reservoirs.

Fines migration is a critical formation-damage mechanism in sandstone reservoirs, causing permeability reduction and injectivity loss during water flooding and injection operations. The onset of fines mobilization is governed by various key physicochemical thresholds, including critical salt concentration (CSC) and critical pH. These parameters control the balance between attractive and repulsive surface forces at the fine-brine-rock interface through electrical double-layer expansion. Although Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO)-based modeling provides mechanistic insight, high-throughput

A new approach to assess gambling-like behavior in laboratory rats: using intracranial self-stimulation as a positive reinforcer.

Pathological gambling is one manifestation of impulse control disorders. The biological underpinnings of these disorders remain elusive and treatment is far from ideal. Animal models of impulse control disorders are a critical research tool for understanding this condition and for medication development. Modeling such complex behaviors is daunting, but by its deconstruction, scientists have recapitulated in animals critical aspects of gambling. One aspect of gambling is cost/benefit decision-making wherein one weighs the anticipated costs and expected benefits of a course of action. Risk/rewar

Prestorage Leukoreduction of Canine Blood Products: A Critically Appraised Topic.

Blood transfusion is a life-saving intervention in canine critical care, but the clinical value of prestorage leukoreduction remains uncertain. This Critically Appraised Topic addressed whether leukoreduced canine blood products, compared with corresponding non-leukoreduced products, improve product quality, reduce recipient inflammatory responses or transfusion reactions, and improve patient-centered outcomes. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and CAB Abstracts were searched from inception to 10 March 2026 using a common search strategy. Twenty-eight comparative articles were retained for appra

Inventing with bacteriology: controversy over anti-cholera therapeutic serum and tensions between transnational science and local practice in Tokyo and Berlin (1890-1902).

The present article examines the material, epistemological, and social dimensions of late nineteenth-century anti-cholera serum controversies that unfolded in Tokyo and Berlin. It seeks to shed light on the conflicting values embedded in the construction of scientific evidence during the transnational exploration of bacteriology as an effective response to controlling epidemics. Driven by Japanese health authorities' initiatives, Japanese bacteriologist Kitasato Shibasaburo participated in the elaboration of bacteriological research oriented toward therapeutic application during his stay in Be

Development and Utility of Practical Indicators of Critical Outcomes in Dengue Patients Presenting to Hospital: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study.

Global travel and climate change have drastically increased the number of countries with endemic or epidemic dengue. The largest dengue outbreak in Taiwan, with 43,419 cases and 228 deaths, occurred in 2015. Practical and cost-effective tools for early prediction of clinical outcomes in dengue patients, especially the elderly, are limited. This study identified the clinical profile and prognostic indicators of critical outcomes in dengue patients on the basis of clinical parameters and comorbidities. A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in a tertiary hospital from 1 July 2015 to
