This study examined individual differences among beginning readers of English as a foreign language (EFL). The study concentrated on the effects of underlying first language (L1) knowledge as well as EFL letter and vocabulary knowledge. Phonological and morphological awareness, spelling, vocabulary knowledge, and word reading in Hebrew L1, in addition to knowledge of EFL letters and EFL vocabulary, were measured. The study also investigated the effect of socioeconomic background (SES) on beginning EFL readers. Participants included 145 fourth graders from three schools representing two socioec

The cultural diversity of the UK poses a challenge for speech and language therapists. Work with children from language minorities has been documented, but less so with adults. This raises the question of whether adults from minority communities are gaining access to services. Deaf people who use British Sign Language (BSL) are one language minority. It is known that sign language is vulnerable to neurological damage. Of interest is whether Deaf people with such damage are referred to speech and language therapy (SLT). The aim was to find out how many deaf people were referred to SLT services

Due to the reported variability of the language laterality index (LI) across fMRI studies, reliable distinction between patients with unilateral and mixed language dominance is currently not possible, preventing clinical implementation of fMRI as a replacement for the invasive Wada test. Variability of the LI may be related to differences in experimental and control tasks, and statistical methodology. The goal of this study was to improve detection power of fMRI for hemispheric language dominance by using a combined analysis of four different language tasks (CTA), that has previously shown mor

Assessments vary as to the contribution of the right hemisphere to language in aphasic patients. Results of a clinicopathologic study in two right-handed subjects with aphasia are reported. The lesions involved the territories of the left middle and anterior cerebral arteries. Oral productions in one case, studied during the three weeks of survival, were limited to automatic series, recitation of a fable, and completion of sentences. Follow-up in the other case was possible during 2 years of language rehabilitation. At the end of this period, repetition of an echolalic type was possible; a pro

Families who speak a language other than English (LOE) are a growing population in the United States. Children of these families are at risk of disparities in clinical settings. This narrative review synthesizes evidence from outpatient and inpatient settings and outlines pragmatic strategies to improve communication and outcomes. Speaking a LOE is linked to low rates of preventive care, underinsurance, long hospitalizations, delayed escalation of care, undertreatment of pain, and adverse events. Although working with professional interpreters improves outcomes, services remain underutilized;

INTRODUCTION: We examine how non-expert humans (young adults unfamiliar with dementia) and large language models (LLMs) perceive dementia in transcribed texts-recognizing signs that may indicate cognitive decline. Human perception is important, as it is often the driver for seeking medical evaluation. LLM perception is equally interesting given their potential as screening tools.
METHODS: Humans and LLMs intuitively judged whether transcribed picture descriptions came from dementia patients or healthy controls. We represented texts using high-level, expert-guided features and used logistic re

Language production in bilinguals relies on the collaborative interaction between two neural systems: the language control system (e.g. the right inferior frontal gyrus) and the language processing system (e.g. the left superior temporal gyrus). However, the causal mapping between these brain systems and their cognitive functions, as well as the temporal dynamics between these two systems during bilingual language production, remain unclear. To investigate this, our study applied online transcranial magnetic stimulation to the right inferior frontal gyrus and left superior temporal gyrus in Ch

Language is supported by a distributed network of brain regions with a particular contribution from the left hemisphere. A multi-level understanding of this network requires studying its genetic architecture. We used resting-state imaging data from 29,681 participants (UK Biobank) to measure connectivity between 18 left-hemisphere regions involved in multimodal sentence-level processing, as well as their right-hemisphere homotopes, and interhemispheric connections. Multivariate genome-wide association analysis of this total network, based on genetic variants with population frequencies >1%, i

BACKGROUND: Most people have strong left-brain lateralisation for language, with a minority showing right- or bilateral language representation. On some receptive language tasks, however, lateralisation appears to be reduced or absent. This contrasting pattern raises the question of whether and how language laterality may fractionate within individuals. Building on our prior work, we postulated (a) that there can be dissociations in lateralisation of different components of language, and (b) these would be more common in left-handers. A subsidiary hypothesis was that laterality indices will cl

Children with delays in expressive language (late talkers) have heterogeneous developmental trajectories. Some are late bloomers who eventually "catch-up," but others have persisting delays or are later diagnosed with developmental language disorder (DLD). Early in development it is unclear which children will belong to which group. We compare the toddler vocabulary composition of late talkers with different long-term outcomes. The literature suggests most children with typical development (TD) have vocabularies dominated by names for categories organized by similarity in shape (e.g., cup), wh

BACKGROUND: The resection of left-sided perisylvian brain lesions harbours the risk of postoperative language impairment. Therefore the individual patient's language distribution is investigated by intraoperative direct cortical stimulation (DCS) during awake surgery. Yet, not all patients qualify for awake surgery. Non-invasive language mapping by repetitive navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has frequently shown a high correlation in comparison with the results of DCS language mapping in terms of language-negative brain regions. The present study analyses the extent of resect

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a life-threatening condition in which early diagnosis and timely intervention are crucial. Recent research into machine learning for predicting ARDS progression based on objective clinical data has been hindered by the limited availability of high-quality annotated datasets. Pretrained Language Models (PLMs) have shown promising results in various Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks, especially in unstructured electronic health records, but their application to numerical clinical data has been constrained by data type limitations. This study in

Recent advancements in deep learning have significantly transformed natural language processing (NLP), enabling sophisticated reasoning and text generation. However, fine-tuning Large Language Models (LLMs) for domain-specific tasks remains a challenge due to the need for curated datasets. This paper introduces a novel package that allows developers to generate reasoning data from any data source, enhancing LLM adaptability across various domains. Additionally, we propose an updated objective function for Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO) with a novel reward component to improve traini

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although developmental language disorder (DLD) is a lifelong, neurodevelopmental condition, its presentation in adulthood has received scant research and clinical attention. Several longitudinal studies have demonstrated that poor language ability may be negatively associated with wider life factors in adulthood. Moreover, although a growing body of qualitative evidence illustrates the lived experience of adults with DLD, more quantitative research on this subject is needed, which may guide evidence-informed assessment and support practices for adults. In this short report

Adult and young bilinguals co-activate their languages to different degrees, even in entirely monolingual tasks. However, many studies use translation pairs with high phonological overlap (e.g., the English-GERMAN: "milk"-"MILCH"), making it difficult to discern the origin of the co-activation. This study examined language co-activation in Catalan-Spanish bilingual toddlers using words with minimal phonological overlap across translations. Thirty Catalan-Spanish bilingual three-year-olds (N = 30; Mage = 36.38 months, range = 35.57-37.43) participated in a visual word paradigm conducted enti

BACKGROUND: Opioid overdose is a global public health emergency, with the United States experiencing high rates of morbidity and mortality due to prescription and illicit opioid use. Traditional public health monitoring systems often fail to provide real-time insights, limiting their capacity for early detection and intervention. Social media platforms, especially Reddit, offer a promising alternative for timely toxicovigilance due to the abundance of user-generated, real-time content.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the use of Reddit as a real-time, high-volume source for toxicovigila

Currently, there is increasing attention on how to best improve language control efficiency and minimize cross-language interference in bilinguals. Previous studies have demonstrated that right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rDLPFC) plays an important role in inhibiting unrelated stimuli. The current study applied transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) during language switching to determine whether modulation of rDLPFC would affect language control mechanisms. All the participants have undergone three types of stimulations: cathodal stimulation, anodal stimulation and sham stimulation

BACKGROUND: There have been calls for speech and language therapists (SLTs) to work within a public-health framework to support language development. Innovative practice is reported, but the range of services remains unknown. Furthermore, the potential impact of public health practice in speech and language therapy on early child development is also currently unknown. A new method in SLT research, systematic scoping reviews enable greater breadth of focus than traditional systematic reviews when identifying innovative practice.
AIM: To report scope and critically appraise evidence of family-f

This study investigated the level of social valence and type of social behaviors expressed in 15 children with specific language impairment as they engaged in typical language intervention activities during conversation-based and imitation-based language programs. These programs were both applied to each child over a period of several weeks. Videotapes of treatment sessions were analyzed for the presence of five verbal and 11 nonverbal behaviors selected to measure social valence. In addition, the child's level of social valence was scored on a three-point rating scale. The results showed that

INTRODUCTION: Urolithiasis is a prevalent condition with several etiological factors, affecting up to 20% of the population and exhibiting high recurrence rates. Its strain on healthcare systems, exacerbated by high incidence and recurrence, often results in insufficient time for thorough diagnostics and counselling. Consequently, many patients seek easily accessible online sources of information. This study aimed to assess the readability and availability of online urolithiasis materials across 24 official European languages to compare readability across different source types.
