Dynamic Assessment of Inflectional Morphology as a Diagnostic Tool for Developmental Language Disorder in French-Speaking Children.

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the learning potential of French-speaking children, either with typical development (TD) or with developmental language disorder (DLD), when learning an invented inflectional morphological rule. We tested the children's performance in learning pseudomorphemes of gender and number with dynamic assessment tasks. METHOD: A total of 101 children with TD and 24 with DLD (Mage = 6;4 [years;months]) were recruited. The gender and number morphological tasks followed the same procedure, with (a) the introduction of a pseudoverb (PV) to describe the action of som

Grammar intervention using graduated input type variation (GITV) for pre-primary children: A single-case experimental design study.

PURPOSE: This study examined the early efficacy of a new theory-driven principle of grammar intervention, graduated input type variation (GITV). METHOD: Three Cantonese-speaking children, aged between 4;01 and 5;10, with oral language difficulties participated in this single baseline within-participant single case experimental study. The children received a total of 300 teaching episodes of the target serial verb construction via focused stimulation and recast over 10 30- to 45-minute sessions. The 30 exemplars of the target included low type variation of the verbs in each of the first five s

Individual Predictors of Language Treatment Response in Children With Developmental Language Disorder: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: Treatment response is the degree to which an individual benefits from a treatment. This systematic review sought to identify and synthesize research evidence regarding individual characteristics that predict language treatment response among children with developmental language disorder (DLD). METHOD: To be eligible for inclusion, articles needed to report results of an oral language treatment program in a group of children aged 4-10 years with identified DLD and also include a quantitative analysis of the relation between one or more pretreatment child characteristics and the outcom

The vocabulary profile of Slovak children with primary language impairment compared to typically developing Slovak children measured by LITMUS-CLT.

This study compared a sample of children with primary language impairment (PLI) and typically developing age-matched children using the crosslinguistic lexical tasks (CLT-SK). We also compared the PLI children with typically developing language-matched younger children who were matched on the basis of receptive vocabulary. Overall, statistical testing showed that the vocabulary of the PLI children was significantly different from the vocabulary of the age-matched children, but not statistically different from the younger children who were matched on the basis of their receptive vocabulary size

Reading comprehension intervention in populations with developmental language disorder: A scoping review.

PURPOSE: Approximately 25-50 % of children with developmental language disorder (DLD) demonstrate difficulties in reading comprehension, which are associated with difficulty in language learning. Given the high likelihood that children with DLD will experience difficulties in reading comprehension, it is important to examine the effectiveness of interventions that target these challenges. The purpose of this study is to conduct a scoping review of the literature on reading comprehension interventions in populations with DLD to synthesize the existing literature and highlight knowledge gaps in

Association between neural prosody discrimination and language abilities in toddlers: a functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

BACKGROUND: Language delay affects near- and long-term social communication and learning in toddlers, and, an increasing number of experts pay attention to it. The development of prosody discrimination is one of the earliest stages of language development in which key skills for later stages are mastered. Therefore, analyzing the relationship between brain discrimination of speech prosody and language abilities may provide an objective basis for the diagnosis and intervention of language delay. METHODS: In this study, all cases(n = 241) were enrolled from a tertiary women's hospital, from 202

Risk factors for early language delay in children within a minority ethnic, bilingual, deprived environment (Born in Bradford's Better Start): a UK community birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Preschool language skills and language delay predict academic and socioemotional outcomes. Children from deprived environments are at a higher risk of language delay, and both minority ethnic and bilingual children can experience a gap in language skills at school entry. However, research that examines late talking (preschool language delay) in an ethnically diverse, bilingual, deprived environment at age 2 is scarce. METHODS: Data from Born in Bradford's Better Start birth cohort were used to identify rates of late talking (≤10th percentile on the Oxford-Communicative Development

Specific developmental disorders. The language-learning continuum.

The goal of this article is to inform and educate those who work with children who present with language-learning disorders about phonologic processing deficits, because this area has been shown to have a significant impact on children and adults who exhibit reading disabilities. Mental health professionals who work with children with reading problems need to be aware of what is known about this source of reading disorders and the implications of this knowledge for prevention and treatment. Advocating for appropriate instruction for children with reading problems is an important role mental he

The role of the speech-language pathologist with hearing-impaired infants.

The educators of the deaf, the audiologists, and other similar professional groups appear to have reasonably clearly delineated roles to play in the management of the hearing-impaired child. Not so with the speech-language pathologist. This paper specifies such a role and offers a model for the delivery of speech-language pathology services to the hearing-impaired infant.

Some perspectives on intervention strategies for persons with developmental disorders.

We present a view of language that crosses modal considerations (e.g., speech vs. augmentative systems) and places language within an interaction framework. We emphasize the need to consider normal social, cognitive, and linguistic development in selecting program guidelines for developmentally delayed persons. We address the child's linguistic code not as a set of phonetic, syntactic, and semantic features that can be trained in isolation, but as a means by which he can exercise the various pragmatic uses of communication. In effect, our interest has thus expanded from the child alone to the

Understanding childhood language disorders.

Developmental language disorders exist in 5% to 10% of preschoolers and have strong genetic implications. There are several variants of dysphasia: mixed receptive/expressive, expressive, or higher order language processing. Preschool children with pervasive developmental disorders are dysphasic as well as autistic. Some undergo a language and behavioral regression, most often as toddlers. The role of subclinical epilepsy in this regression is unknown because it is often ignored. Most dysphasic children speak by schoolage but are at substantial risk for reading/academic difficulty. Powerful new

What do they say and how? A comparative syntactic characterization of children with and without Developmental Language Disorder in European Portuguese.

Syntactic difficulties are widely reported in children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), yet detailed evidence from European Portuguese (EP) remains scarce. Language Sample Analysis (LSA) offers an ecologically valid approach to examining children's syntactic production; however, its application requires language-specific data and validated, multidimensional measures. This study aimed to provide a detailed syntactic comparison between children with DLD with syntactic impairment and typically developing (TD) peers acquiring EP, using a multidimensional LSA framework complemented by st

A further look at two grammatical measures from children's language samples and their contribution to the diagnostic process.

Previous research has identified two measures derived from language sample analysis as having a high level of diagnostic accuracy for developmental language disorder (DLD): a verb-based measure, the Finite Verb Morphology Composite (FVMC) and a more comprehensive grammatical measure, the Sentence Point. In this study, we evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of these two measures using a new group of children with DLD. To determine whether these measures would likely add to diagnostic decision making if used in conjuncion with other tests of language, we also examined the relationship betw

Word Learning by Preschool-Age Children: Differences in Encoding, Re-Encoding, and Consolidation Across Learners During Slow Mapping.

PURPOSE: Children with typical development vary in how much experience they need to learn words. This could be due to differences in the amount of information encoded during periods of input, consolidated between periods of input, or both. Our primary purpose is to identify whether encoding, consolidation, or both, drive individual differences in the slow-mapping process. METHOD: Four- to 6-year-old children (N = 43) were trained on nine form-referent pairs across consecutive days. Children's ability to name referents was assessed at the beginning and end of each session. Word learning was as

Association Between Symbolic Play and Language: A Comparison Between Typically Developing Children and Children with Down Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Language and symbolic play require the same underlying symbolic ability and develop parallel to one another. The aim of this study was to determine the association between symbolic play and vocabulary in typically developing children and children with Down syndrome in Malaysia. METHODS: Twenty-five typically developing children and 25 children with Down syndrome aged between 12 and 36 months were involved in this study. They were recruited from an early intervention center and various kindergartens from the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Their play skills were assessed using th

Narrative retells in Swedish school-aged children - a clinical pilot study.

AIM: The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate two new retelling tasks intended for clinical use in terms of language sample size, effects of picture support, and order of presentation. METHODS: Forty Swedish-speaking children in grades 4-6 participated in the study, 31 children with typical language development (TLD, mean age 11;1), and nine children with developmental language disorder (DLD, mean age 11;5). Two oral retells, one with and one without picture support, were analyzed with regards to productivity, syntactic complexity, basic Story Grammar (SG) units, and Internal Responses (IR

Working Memory and Linguistic Performance of Dual Language Learners With and Without Developmental Language Disorders.

Purpose This research note describes the use of working memory measures as potential indicators of developmental language disorders (DLD) in preschool-age dual language learners from Spanish-speaking backgrounds. This report is an extension of early work, completed by the same authors that described the diagnostic accuracy of a Spanish nonword repetition task. Method One hundred thirty Spanish-speaking families with preschool-age children participated; 37 children had DLD, and 93 were typically developing. Families were recruited from early childhood programs in three states in the western reg

Language cannot be reduced to biology: perspectives from neuro-developmental disorders affecting language learning.

The study of language knowledge guided by a purely biological perspective prioritizes the study of syntax. The essential process of syntax is recursion--the ability to generate an infinite array of expressions from a limited set of elements. Researchers working within the biological perspective argue that this ability is possible only because of an innately specified genetic makeup that is specific to human beings. Such a view of language knowledge may be fully justified in discussions on biolinguistics, and in evolutionary biology. However, it is grossly inadequate in understanding language-l

[Genetic causes in mild speech acquisition delay with/without mild developmental delay: significance for ENT physicians].

Mental retardation (MR) has a prevalence of about 2%, and developmental speech disorders with unknown cause about 7%. Very often, developmental delay represents an early warning sign of later developmental problems, such as mental retardation and other developmental disorders (DD). Prognosis depends on many factors, most notably the limiting factor provided by the severity of the underlying brain dysfunction and its consequences for communication, cognition and other behaviour. Chromosomal aberrations are the major cause of MR and also play a role in mild forms of DD and speech acquisition del
