Optimising spherical periacetabular osteotomy: a strategy to minimise leg shortening.

BACKGROUND: Spherical periacetabular osteotomy (SPO) preserves pelvic structures but can cause leg shortening due to the upward and outward shift of the centre of rotation. Modified preoperative planning aims to medially shift the acetabular fragment's highest point to reduce leg shortening. This study investigated the fixation state of the rotated bone fragment in SPO, its relationship with leg length, and strategies to prevent leg shortening. METHODS: Between February 2019 and August 2023, 57 joints in 52 patients undergoing SPO were examined. The postoperative acetabular movement was class

Teratogenic effects of methyl parathion in developing chick embryos.

The effect of methyl parathion (MP) on developing chick embryos was investigated. The embryos were exposed at different stages of development to various doses of MP via the yolk sac route. This resulted in retarded growth which included reduced body weight and reduced body length and length of leg bones. Other teratogenic signs observed were short neck, muscular hypoplasia of legs, abdominal hernias and haemorrhagic spots in brain and upper body. These findings suggest that MP was a teratogen when injected into the yolk sacs of developing embryos.

The ball and socket ankle joint.

This paper reports fifteen cases of ball and socket articulation at the ankle followed up for an average of twelve years. All patients showed inequality of leg length. Ten patients showed coalitions of the bones of the hindfoot and nine patients had a reduction in the number of bony elements of the forefoot. Other associated anomalies are described. The abnormality seems to be part of a congenital short-limb malformation, perhaps modified by adaptive change associated with rigidity of the hindfoot. Surgical intervention was not required in any patient in the series.

The effect of leg fracture on pedestrian kinematic response and injury severity in car-pedestrian collisions.

This study aims to clarify the relationship between pedestrian leg bone fracture, the head, chest, abdomen and pelvis kinematic responses, and knee joint injury severity in car-pedestrian collisions, based on a coupled FE model with two scenarios: leg bone fracture and non-fracture. It finds leg fractures cause abdominal and pelvic upward Z-axis shifts, reduce knee ligament elongation rates and reduce femur/tibia peak bending moment, but have no significant effects on head and chest kinematics and injuries. This study demonstrates that kinematic responses of abdomen and pelvis and knee injury

Valgus-varus deformity of the intertarsal joint in broiler chickens.

A lateral or medial angulation of the shaft of the distal tibiotarsal bone resulting in deviation of the lower part of the leg and frequently with bending of the proximal shaft of the tarsometatarsus is the most common leg deformity in broiler chickens. This lateral or medial deviation of the legs in broiler chickens, which has been described by many workers, deserves a specific name such as angular bone deformity or valgus-varus deformity of intertarsal joint, so that it may be separated from other varieties of lameness in broilers.

Common and Uncommon Injuries in Ultra-endurance Sports.

Ultra-endurance sports are associated with prolonged physical exercise both during training and competition. Musculoskeletal injuries are common as a result of the repetitive physical stresses. Stress fractures in the weight-bearing bones should always be suspected when ultra-endurance athletes present with pain over bony structures. Most stress fractures can be treated with activity modifications but some such as femoral neck and tibial shaft stress fractures may require operative fixation. The knee seems to be the most frequent source of injuries in ultra-endurance athletes. Patellofemoral s

Effect of physiotherapy rehabilitation on osteogenesis imperfecta with a midshaft tibial fracture in the 11-year-old patient: a case report.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a brittle bone disease is a rare genetic condition characterised by skeletal anomalies that results in higher bone fragility, reduced bone mass, deformity, and other connective-tissue signs in which the body is unable to form healthy bones. This case report presents a case of an 11-year-old male kid who visited our hospital with a complaint of pain and deformity in his left leg. After investigations, he was diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta with a midshaft tibial fracture of the left leg. Physical therapy rehabilitation was started and plays one of the import

A 37-year follow-up evaluation of multiple-stage femur and tibia lengthening in dyschondroplasia (enchondromatosis) with a net gain of 23.3 centimeters.

This case report presents the rare combination of circumstances of a child with (a) dyschondroplasia (enchondromatosis) limited to all the major epiphyseal plates of one lower extremity, (b) unusual capacity to cooperate, and (c) parents who refused permission to treat the limb by amputation but allowed the child to participate in a long-term clinical experiment. In dyschondroplasia (Ollier's disease), the long bones grow in diameter but not in length. In this condition, it was possible (by fasciotomy, osteotomy, and interposition of wedge blocks or hemicylindrical bone implants (stabilized by

Zinc deficiency in pheasant chicks fed practical diets.

A disease syndrome characterized by abnormal feathering and varus deviation of the tarsometatarsus spontaneously occurred in pheasant chicks fed a practical commercially prepared diet. The addition of supplemental Zn to the commercial diet was effective in alleviating the clinical signs, even though the commercial mix had Zn levels that met the published pheasant chick requirement. Supplemental arginine was ineffective in reducing the severity of the clinical signs. Also, when the diet was mixed in a laboratory setting, pheasant chicks did not develop abnormal feathering and leg bones. Clinica

Parental smoking during pregnancy shortens offspring's legs.

One of the most severe detrimental environmental factors acting during pregnancy is foetal smoke exposure. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of maternal, paternal and parental smoking during pregnancy on relative leg length in 7- to 10-year-old children. The research conducted in the years 2001-2002 included 978 term-born children, 348 boys and 630 girls, at the age of 7-10 years. Information concerning the birth weight of a child was obtained from the health records of the women. Information about the mother's and the father's smoking habits during pregnancy and about the mothers

Pubertal timing predicts leg length and childhood body mass index predicts sitting height in young adult men.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of pubertal timing and childhood body mass index (BMI), both within normal range, on adult anthropometrics. STUDY DESIGN: Detailed growth charts were retrieved for the men participating in the population-based Gothenburg Osteoporosis and Obesity Determinants study. Age at peak height velocity and childhood BMI were calculated (n = 527), and anthropometric measurements were performed. RESULTS: Analysis of variance analysis of tertiles according to age at peak height velocity demonstrated that the early peak height velocity tertile had a lower adult height

Radionuclide imaging in patients with amputations of the lower leg: typical imaging patterns in five cases.

Amputation of the lower leg is not uncommon in elderly patients with chronic infections or vascular problems of the leg and foot, and most often it is performed below the knee or on the distal part of the lower leg (i.e., Syme's amputation). After operation, healing disorders with or without infection can occur, and usually structural imaging methods are performed for diagnosis. Radionuclide imaging using a combination of bone scans and infection scintigraphy can help to identify bone and soft tissue infection. Interpreting radionuclide scans is difficult, because imaging findings after amputa

Strontium administration in young chickens improves bone volume and architecture but does not enhance bone structural and material strength.

Genetic selection for rapid body growth in broiler chickens has resulted in adverse effects on the skeletal system exemplified by a higher rate of cortical fractures in leg bones. Strontium (Sr) has been reported to have beneficial effects on bone formation and strength. We supplemented the diet of 300-day-old chicks with increasing dosages of Sr (0%, 0.12%, or 0.24%) to study the capacity of the element to improve bone quality and mechanical integrity. Treatment with Sr increased cortical bone volume and reduced bone porosity as measured by micro-computed tomography. The higher level of Sr si

Follow-up study of cartilaginous bone tumors.

A series of clinical and pathological studies were performed on 74 cartilaginous bone tumors including osteochondromas, multiple cartilaginous exostoses, chondromas, chondromatoses, benign chondroblastomas and chondrosarcomas. Resection was adequate for the osteochondromas, and no recurrence was observed. Out of 14 multiple cartilaginous exostoses, three, all in flat bones showed malignant change. The predominant sites of chondroma were the finger and toe bones, and curettage and bone graft was adequate treatment. Neither recurrence nor malignant change was observed. Two cases of chondromatosi

Primary aneurysmal bone cyst of the patella: a case report.

Aneurysmal bone cysts account for less than 1% of primary bone tumours and have a predilection for the metaphyses of the long bones of the leg. Only 1% of all aneurysmal bone cysts occur in the patella. We report on a 30-year-old man with a primary aneurysmal bone cyst in the right patella treated with curettage. The defect was filled with demineralised bone matrix and allogeneic cancellous bone graft. At the 1.5-year follow-up, the bone graft was well incorporated, the patient experienced no pain or tenderness and had a full range of knee movement.

Lengthening procedures of small bones of foot and foot stump.

Foot length discrepancy may result from congenital or acquired causes. If the absence of the foot is more proximal than the metatarsal level, push off and foot resilience will be disturbed and rapid walking and spring will be awkward. Those patients have to be fitted with a prosthesis extending above the ankle to the distal leg. The functional impairment and poor cosmetic appearance become social problems especially for adolescents. Twelve cases underwent a lengthening procedure of small bones of the foot in our clinic since 1995 to lengthen the foot or a foot stump. Results were satisfactory.
