The fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) is one of the most destructive pests of corn. New infestations have been reported in the East Hemisphere, reaching India, China, Malaysia, and Australia, causing severe destruction to corn and other crops. In Puerto Rico, practical resistance to different mode of action compounds has been reported in cornfields. In this study, we characterized the inheritance of resistance to chlorantraniliprole and flubendiamide and identified the possible cross-resistance to cyantraniliprole and cyclaniliprole. The Puerto Rican (PR) strain showed high levels of resis

The greater wax moth Galleria mellonella is a cosmopolitan pest of hives of the western honey bee Apis mellifera, where it remains exposed to varroicides applied by beekeepers in past decades as pest management chemicals for control of Varroa destructor, a devastating ectoparasite of bees. The prolonged presence of coumaphos residues, an organophosphate varroicide, in beeswax may be responsible for current levels of tolerance exhibited by G. mellonella, a non-target species that infests beehives. In this study, a field-collected strain of waxworms exhibited a higher LC50 value for coumaphos th

True setae borne on the abdominal tergites of Ochrogaster lunifer Herrich-Schӓffer caterpillars are the agents of an irritating contact dermatitis, osteomyelitis, ophthalmia, and severe allergic reactions in humans, and are the cause of Equine Amnionitis and Fetal Loss in Australia. The setae are detached and readily dislodge from the integument whereby they disperse throughout the environment. To better understand the true setae of O. lunifer as agents of medical and veterinary concern, we studied their characteristics and distance dispersed. Whereas members of the European Thaumetopoeinae ha

Plants respond to insect feeding with a number of defense mechanisms. Using maize genotypes derived from Antiquan germ plasm that are resistant to Lepidoptera, we have demonstrated that a unique 33-kD cysteine proteinase accumulates in the whorl in response to larval feeding. The abundance of the proteinase increased dramatically at the site of larval feeding after 1 hr of infestation and continued to accumulate for as long as 7 days. The 33-kD cysteine proteinase was most abundant in the yellow-green portion of the whorl-the normal site of larval feeding and the tissue that has the greatest i

BACKGROUND: Application method and timing can strongly influence the efficacy and efficiency of insecticide treatments. The western bean cutworm, Striacosta albicosta, is a significant pest that can cause severe damage to corn ears through larval feeding. Management of S. albicosta frequently relies on insecticide application; however, inadequate applications or ineffective insecticides can lead to control failures. We seek to evaluate the efficacy of bifenthrin (pyrethroid) and chlorantraniliprole (diamide) for managing S. albicosta in corn using aerial and chemigation applications.
RESULTS:

BACKGROUND: Plants are subject to a variety of stressors that will eventually limit their development and yield. However, analysis of the combination of abiotic and biotic stresses is usually disregarded. The combination of stresses can have synergistic or antagonistic effects and, therefore, they require greater clarification for assertive decision-making. In this study, we examined how the interaction between water stress and sugarcane borer injury alters the physiological aspects of sugarcane through gas exchange parameters and foliar reflectance.
RESULTS: Our results show that both stress

Contact with Lonomia caterpillars can cause severe envenomation with hemorrhagic syndrome, consumptive coagulopathy, acute renal failure, and death. In Brazil, an antivenom was produced using extracts from L. obliqua caterpillar bristles as antigen and has been used in other countries in South America to treat envenomation caused by distinct species of Lonomia. This study aimed to characterize the activities of toxins from Lonomia descimoni caterpillars found in Colombia and the neutralization of these toxins by the Brazilian Lonomia antivenom. In recent years, several botanical species have been tested to determine their ability to reduce the damage caused by Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) in brassica crops. Considering the insecticidal potential demonstrated by many botanical species, the effects of the aqueous extracts of Psychotria leiocarpa Cham. & Schltdl, Psychotria deflexa DC., Acosmium subelegans (Mohlenbr.) Yakovlev and Vatairea macrocarpa (Benth.) Ducke by infusion and maceration on the biological parameters of P. xylostella were evaluated. All extracts reduced P. xylostella larval duration and caused la

Chilo sacchariphagus (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is an economically important sugarcane pest. Although numerous studies were conducted on the physiological responses in C. sacchariphagus, little is known regarding the genes regulating these physiological processes. Gene expression analysis by qRT-PCR can offer a significant indication for functional gene studies. To our knowledge, the reference genes of C. sacchariphagus have not been screened or evaluated, which hinders the functional gene study. In the present study, the stability of seven reference genes (β-ACT, GAPDH, BTF3, 28S, RPL7, EF1α, a

The silkworm Bombyx mori (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) is a lepidopteran model insect of great economic importance. The parasitoid Exorista sorbillans (Diptera, Tachinidae) is the major pest of B. mori and also a promising candidate for biological control. However, the molecular interactions between hosts and dipteran parasitoids have only partially been studied. Gene expression analysis by reverse-transcription quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) is indispensable to characterise their interactions. Accurate normalisation of RT-qPCR-based gene expression requires the use of

The tachinid fly, Exorista sorbillans, is a notorious ovolarviparous endoparasitoid of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, causing severe damage to silkworm cocoon industry. Silkworm larvae show typically precocious wandering behavior after being parasitized by E. sorbillans; however, the underlying molecular mechanism remains unexplored. Herein, we investigated the changes in the levels of 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) and juvenile hormone (JH) titer, and they both increased in the hemolymph of parasitized silkworms. Furthermore, we verified the expression patterns of related genes, which showed an upregul

Previous studies on the legume pod borer, Maruca vitrata Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), a serious pest of cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. (Fabales: Fabaceae), in sub-Saharan Africa have focused on sex pheromones, but the role of the host plant on sexual behavior has not been explored. We investigated this interaction in the laboratory using behavioral assays and chemical analyses. We found that the presence of cowpea seedlings and a dichloromethane extract of the leaf increased coupling in the legume pod borer by 33 and 61 %, respectively, compared to the control, suggesting the invo

BACKGROUND: Chitinases and ecdysone are both crucial for insect growth and development, yet the regulatory interplay between them remains poorly understood. Our previous research demonstrated that the chitinase gene HaCHT4 critically regulates the chitin content and surface structure of peritrophic membrane (PM) in Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). RESULTS: Here, a 1286 bp 5’-flanking region of HaCHT4 was cloned to investigate its regulatory mechanism. Bioinformatics analysis predicted the presence of several cis-regulatory elements (CREs) within its 5’-flanking region, i

Maruca vitrata, the legume pod borer, causes yield losses of up to 80% in grain legumes. Increasing insecticide resistance and environmental concerns necessitate sustainable pest management alternatives. In the present study, the complete vitellogenin (Vg) coding sequence (CDS), a key reproductive gene involved in oogenesis and embryonic development, was cloned and molecularly characterised from M. vitrata. The assembled Vg CDS (∼5.3 kb) shared 99.04% sequence identity with the reported M. vitrata Vg sequence (MG799570.1). Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated close evolutionary association with

The lack of compliance with refugia planting by growers of transgenic cotton expressing toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a major factor contributing to the development of resistance to Bt toxins Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab and outbreak of pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella in several cotton growing regions of India. The present study estimated the resistant alleles frequency in South Indian populations of P. gossypiella against Cry1Ac + Cry2Ab toxins produced by Bt Bollgard II® cotton. Among the 33 established isofemale families, 19 laid fertile eggs and reached the F1 generation, of whic

Invertebrates are becoming more popular models for research on the immune system. The innate immunity possessed by insects shows both structural and functional similarity to the resistance displayed by mammals, and many processes occurring in insect hemocytes are similar to those that occur in mammals. The humoral immune response in insects acts by melanization, clotting and the production of reactive oxygen species and antimicrobial peptides, while the cellular immunity system is based on nodulation, encapsulation and phagocytosis. An increasingly popular insect model in biological research i

The cabbage moth, Mamestra brassicae L. (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae), is a polyphagous species that is often choosing plants of Brassica as hosts for oviposition. In the search for biologically relevant odorants used by these moths, gas chromatography linked to electrophysiological recordings from single receptor neurons (RNs) has been employed, resulting in classification of distinct types of neurons. This study presents specific olfactory RNs responding to methyl salicylate (MeS) as primary odorant and showing a weak response to methyl benzoate, the 2 aromatic compounds occurring together in sev

The cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a polyphagous global agricultural pest that brings serious losses to many kinds of crops. Emamectin benzoate, chlorantraniliprole, and chlorfenapyr are effective insecticides for their control in the field so far. Here, the low lethal effects of the 3 insecticides on H. armigera were evaluated. Exposure to the low lethal concentration (LC25) of these insecticides resulted in prolonged larval and adult developmental periods, with variations in pupal duration across in treatments. Specifically, emamectin benzoate and

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a highly poisonous gas with an unpleasant smell of rotten eggs. Previous studies of H2S have primarily focused on its effects on mammalian nervous and respiratory systems. In this study, silkworm developmental parameters and changes in metabolites in response to H2S exposure were investigated using a hemolymph metabolomic approach, based on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The developmental parameters, body weight, cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight, and cocoon shell ratio, were noticeably increased following H2S exposure, with the greatest effects obs

The meadow moth Loxostege sticticalis is a serious agricultural pest that feeds on the leaves of many economic crops, such as sugar beet, soybean, sunflower, and potato. In addition to the rapid migration of adult moths, the collective foraging behavior of the larvae is also thought to be involved in the search for new food sources and substantially contributes to the expansion of the infested area. However, whether and how the chemical signals take part in this process remains unknown. In this study, two larva-specific expressed odorants, LstiOR5 and LstiOR6, were successfully cloned and deop
